I'm a collector of quotes. Wisdom and humor are two things that I cherish, and I think that those qualities are what makes clever quotes and anecdotes worth learning. You can live by a truly practical quote, or share it for generations afterwords without it growing stale.

I'd like to hear some of your favorite quotes. Who knows? There might be a few that I'd like to add to my collection. You don't need to name who created them (heck, you may have even made them yourself), though if you happen to know the originator, I'd be quite pleased if you would share it.

To start, I'll name a few of my own:

"You will only see it when you believe it."

Woman: "Winston, you're drunk!"
Churchill: "Madame, you are ugly, but I will be sober in the morning."

"Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery

"Be the change you wish to see in the world" - Gandhi

"Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils ..." - Louis Hector Berlioz

Army Recruiter: "What branch of the military would like to be in, Mr. Ustinov?"
Ustinov: "I would like to be in the Tank Core."
Army Recruiter: "Oh really? And why is that?"
Ustinov: "Because I would like to go into battle sitting down."

"The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don't want, drink what you don't like, and do what you'd rather not."-Mark Twain

"The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory."

"My advice to you is get married: if you find a good wife you'll be happy; if not, you'll become a philosopher." - Socrates

"When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That's relativity." - Albert Einstein

“Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes.” - Jack Handey

You don't have to post as many as I did, of course, but these are just to give you some ideas.

'Hodor' - Hodor.

Here's another great one:

"Hodor Hodor Hodor, Hodor Hodor. Hodor!" The man preaches wisdom.

EDIT: "For the night is dark and full of terrors" That one gave me chills when I first read it.

“Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today.”
James Dean

“To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain. To try is to risk failure, but risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.”

“Experience is the name every one gives to their mistakes.”

"When we have glimpsed, by an overwhelming and readily renewable intuition, anyone’s own uselessness, it is incomprehensible that everyone has not done the same. To do away with oneself seems such a clear and simple action! Why is it so rare, why does everyone avoid it? Because, if reason disavows the appetite for life, the nothing which extends our acts is nonetheless of a power superior to all absolutes; it explains the tacit coalition of mortals against death; it is not only the symbol of existence, but existence itself; it is everything. And this nothing, this everything, cannot give life a meaning, but it nonetheless makes life persevere in what it is: a state of non-suicide." Emil Cioran

"It's not easy to improvise, it's the most difficult thing to do. Even when one improvises in front of a camera or microphone, one ventriloquizes or leaves another to speak in one's place the schemas and languages that are already there. There are already a great number of prescriptions that are prescribed in our memory and in our culture. All the names are already preprogrammed. It's already the names that inhibit our ability to ever really improvise. One can't say what ever one wants, one is obliged more or less to reproduce the stereotypical discourse. And so I believe in improvisation and I fight for improvisation. But always with the belief that it's impossible. And there where there is improvisation I am not able to see myself. I am blind to myself. And it's what I will see, no, I won't see it. It's for others to see. The one who is improvised here, no I won't ever see him."

Derrida - from an unpublished interview.

Also, **** anyone quotes Gandhi/someone out of context/or some bullshit saying that's wrongfully attributed to an author.

"As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend." King Solomon

I was waiting to see Solomon show up in here. :) I love Proverbs; such a terrific book.

Edit: I'm actually loving all of these. I should get to memorizing a few.

SIN, perhaps it's my lack of sleep, but that's a loaded paragraph. Though I think I get the essence...

Yah- if only he'd take heed to his own advice, eh? Though I don't think I'd allow my daughter near the man.... For obvious reasons. -.-

But yes, Proverbs is a terrific book.
