Ziost was a planet as desolate as all the other homeworlds of the Sith. They had a habit of ruining whatever they touched in their quest for power. And yet, they managed to build up on top of what they destroyed. People said the galaxy was a cycle, and she had a hard time arguing with that. Jedi were destroyed and rebuilt. Sith were destroyed and rebuilt. Ziost was laid waste and rebuilt. It's all happened before and it will all happen again.

Arla stood out on one of the balconies of the Sith temple and academy, looking out over the bleak, snow-covered nothingness beyond. The biting cold plucked at her skin as the wind picked up again, but it didn't bother her. She pressed a small instrument to her lips and began to play. The peace and isolation of the balcony - because really no one in their right mind was out here - was the perfect place for her to play. The instrument was a tradition of her people and one that reminded her of home.

She blew into the mouth piece, fingers moving in a rhythm to cover the holes as the soft notes were carried away by the winds. It wasn't long before her mind melted into the Shadow. It had become a form of meditation for her and an expression of her connection to the Force. After a few moments she didn't even realize what she was playing anymore and the Shadow was wrapped around her like a warm blanket, keeping the biting chill at bay.

Caerllion walked absently through the corridors of the Sith temple/academy of Ziost. The grimoire that he was carrying was too interesting for him to stop reading it while he walked toward a calm place. Of course, he would occasionally look at what was in front of him, but most of the time his face would be turned to the book.

Since his mission with Arla in Columex, the Acolyte had deepened his studies in the arcane. He paid special attention to these related to mind control and manipulation. Seeing himself as someone more inclined to diplomacy, such spells and rituals could be very useful to his field of work.

The possibility of slaving someone to his will through different ways was something that he wanted to do. Unfortunately, so far these ideas and studies could only remain in the theory. The Annfyn still didn’t have the power level to try these things, at least not alone.

When he passed near a balcony, Caerllion heard music. It seemed to be coming from an instrument like some type of flute. Looking at the direction from where it was coming, Acolyte saw a lonely woman at the balcony. Curious with why she was there alone, he walked toward her.

While he walked toward her, Caerllion noticed that the woman was someone very familiar. “Arla? Is it you?” he asked, trying to not sound too happy with her presence. The Acolyte had completely forgotten his book.

Arla's entire consciousness had melted into the Shadow around her as her fingers moved. She was vaguely aware a familiar presence nearby and approaching, but she didn't break off from her song or the stream of consciousness flowing through her.

At least, until she heard her name. She stiffened slightly, mind pulled harshly back into her body again and the song came to a freeze. She turned to look at him, silvery eyes still almost distant for a moment before she focused on Caerllion.

Her eyebrows rose and the instrument fell to her side. Caer, good to see you! she said, eyes falling almost immediately to the book in his hand. She reached over and slid the Dathomirian pipe into her pocket before turning to face him.

You don't normally work out of Ziost, do you? she asked. Studying? she asked.

Caerllion regretted having called Arla. He had noticed how the Champion stiffened when she heard his voice. Perhaps he should have left her alone playing her flute, she seemed to be so relaxed doing it. He could have only waited from the door, watching her from afar.

The Acolyte decided to stop thinking this way. If he really did it, Arla would probably think that he was some type of weirdo or creeper. It would be the death of his reputation if it happened, besides the chances of the Champion being pissed with him. After their mission together, the Annfyn preferred to have her as an ally.

It’s good to see you too! Do you have any news about Columex and Olathar’s administration?” since he returned from this mission, Caerllion had focused on training and studying. This way, he didn’t have much time to read the most recent news about the planet that they worked so hard to annex.

A bit of both, to be honest.” he said, his cheeks getting a bit red. He wondered if she had noticed that his slim shape was changing due to his use of the Thorne Routine. The poor guy didn’t notice that she didn’t mean to workout, his IQ seemed to be going down when near her. “I came to study. Ziost has one of the best libraries among the Sith academies.

He wondered if he could say to her what his search was about. While he was doing nothing illegal for the Empire, Caerllion feared that Arla could think that his studies were silly. Then, he remembered that she said in Columex that the two could learn together. “I’m searching about Force related magick and about ways that Dark Side ones can affect the mind of sentient beings.” he offered the book for her to see. “I found that most of them need the victim to pass through some type of ritual.

When he mentioned "a bit of both" she was completely lost as to what he was talking about and she assumed it was just a slip of the tongue, moving right along as he continued to speak.

All's going smoothly so far. I'll probably be spending quite a bit of time there in the coming months, she said. She'd already started reaping the rewards of their success, and the money that she'd been collecting from Olathar and his businesses certainly wasn't hurting her at all. She'd been working on lining up a new apartment, and had managed to get her hands on a ship just like her mother's. Flying in luxury had been nice.

Of course. Well, it is one of the Sith homeworlds, she said with a nod. Even all these years later it was a critical world because of what it represented as much as because of its power in the Force.

Ah, I see I piqued your curiosity, then, she said with a snicker, glancing down at the title of the grimoire he had in his hands. She wasn't nearly as well studied as her mother, but she was working on it. She, too, spent a great deal of time with her nose in books.

Yeah, the power's too unstable to use otherwise. Without runes and items for focusing, you'll just end up ripping your own mind apart with that much raw power, she said. With her mind no longer lost in meditation and the Shadow no longer cushioning her, the biting cold was starting to drain some of the color from her already-pale cheeks.

Come on, she said, motioning with her head as she stepped inside and back into the climate controlled interior of the building.

What got you interested in arcanistry? she asked. Most Sith went for the route of combat over the more secret and hidden powers. It was a slower path, but one that was ultimately more valuable in the long run... if you could survive. Those who chose the slow path were often trampled by brutes with lightsabers if they weren't careful. This entire temple was testament to that: it produced some of the best warriors in the galaxy, but far fewer scholars than Korriban.

It’s really good news. After everything that happened with us there, I’m glad that the situation in Columex is settled.” Caerllion still remembers how he felt apprehensive with the possibility of another of Garlon’s relatives coming from nowhere to reclaim the planet for themselves. Like Arla, he didn’t have the best opinion about the Hutts, even less the interest to meet more of them.

Caerllion’s face became red and his ears twitched when Arla said that she piqued his curiosity. It wasn’t only that, but she also catched his attention in other ways. “Yes, your performance in the ritual and with teleportation was really amazing.

Yes. Such magick is rarely used because of the complexity of the rituals, even if its purpose could be very useful.” if it wasn’t the trouble for catching someone, making the enchantment and then releasing the person, the Empire could have slaved several individuals in key positions in the enemy territories.

He followed the Champion inside the building and away from the cold. Like Arla, the Annfyn was also suffering from the cold. With his homeworld having a temperate climate, the nearly polar wheater of Ziost was beyond what he could support.

When Arla asked the reason why he was so interested in the Arcane, Caerllion contemplated if he should tell her about his ideas. It wasn’t because he feared that she would steal them. No, he feared that she would call him a silly dreamer and laugh at his plans.

In the end, the Annfyn decided to tell the truth. “Well, I want to find a way of using magick to help boost the Empire's performance in diplomacy. If we could have some leaders of FWA planets binded to our will, the necessity of expensive invasions would decrease.” he explained, trying to make sense of his thoughts. “I’m not against invasions, but I believe that the Imperial economy would feel relieved if more worlds were annexed without the necessity of spending large sums of money in battles.

I want to learn ways of polishing these rituals to make them less complex and more suitable for someone like me, who wants to help the Empire expand through diplomatic and subversive ways.” while most of the Acolytes that he knew preferred to go in battles, Caerllion wanted to work with subversion and manipulation. The Annfyn didn't want to be considered less helpful. He shrugged, with it being an involuntary act to this thought. “ I always considered that my devotion to the Empire was the same as those that went to conquest, the difference is that I want to use the battlefield that I’m most familiar with. Do you think that it's wrong?

Arla walked on as they spoke, past the many Acolytes and troopers who were milling about, many of them heads in their books as they prepared for whatever test their instructors might put them through next.

Eventually, they can to a slightly more private room with a window that looked out over the frozen landscape beyond. She took a seat in a rather comfortable chair at one side of the room as she listened to what he said, explaining his thoughts and plans. Her face never twitched, the silvery gaze simply resting on him in that flat, very-Sephi-like fashion.

But conflict makes us strong, right? she asked. It wasn't that she disagreed with him, but much more so that she was going to play devil's advocate. She wanted to see how he thought and how thought out his positions were. Such was the nature of teaching... whether he had asked to be taught or not was a different question. Though, he had asked for her opinions, and of course, she couldn't make that too easy.

If we avoid war then we lose that edge that makes us powerful. The predatory aspect of what it means to be Sith. Already, so many have lost that, she said, this time her voice did reflect her opinion on that fact. The reality was that Arla - royalty or not - was not a soft woman. She had grown on a hard planet surrounded by hard people and then gone away to the Sith. Many in the Order today lacked the resolve or killing power of those like Raze or even her mother.

Rituals and the arcane have a place in the Sith, no question, she did agree after another moment, but they will only get you so far, she added.

Of course. I believe that military expansion is also necessary, or we risk giving the Galaxy the impression that we are weak.” Caerllion wasn’t against the idea of invasions, he only thought that the Empire could also use competent diplomats and manipulators. After all, good fruits can come from the actions of those working in the shadows.

However, I believe that the Empire could also occasionally use less direct and invasive ways when expanding. If we can put a puppet ruling a planet, then we shouldn’t avoid it.” the Annfyn believed that all strategies and possibilities were worth being used if they could give more power to the Sith.

You mean how many Sith nowadays seem more like a Jedi, right?” he asked, being very aware of what the Champion meant. “Perhaps I’m exaggerating, but most of the rumors around the Academies are calling these people as Jedith, Jedi that think that are Sith.” he thought that it was a silly name for a growing problem in the Order.

He wondered if Arla was thinking that his insistence for the use of the Arcane to facilitate the annexation of planets was a signal that he was a lapsed Sith. He killed a Hutt in their last mission and planned the purge of several individuals and their families. The Annfyn would be a hypocrite if he started to feel bad about the predatory ways of the Sith.

The ideas that he had were only his mind being logical. Why lose resources with the conquest of a weak planet, if you could subvert its leaders? These resources could be better used to destroy the Jedi or to invade important worlds.

Anyway, I’m studying ways of slaving someone's mind to your will, while having the rituals less complex or even without the person's presence. Perhaps through an item that could be used as some sort of string to allow us to manipulate our pupett.” Caerllion decided to come back to his idea. “It could even give us some eyes in the FWA.

Now that I said why I’m here, it’s your time.” he said, smiling at the Champion. “If you allow me to ask, why are you visiting Ziost? Even if you play the flute perfectly, I don’t believe that you came here to only do it on a cold balcony, like some type of Ice Princess.” it could look like an intentional flirt, but the Acolyte was unaware of the fact that it could be interpreted this way.

He indeed seemed to become dumb near her.

She nodded along to pretty much everything she said, listening to his thoughts and decisions about what he had learned and seen.

I don't disagree not everything needs to be open war, she said after a moment.

The mind is a powerful tool and it's been used by many of the most effective Sith down through the years. I'm glad you're pursuing all the possibilities, she said.

Yes, the "Jedith," she said, frowning for a moment at the name. She hadn't heard it used, but she also didn't socialize as much as people who were in the Academies. They're certainly not making the Order stronger, she said.

Also studying, she admitted. There's a lot to learn in the Ziost libraries and unfortunately I can't take it all with me, she said. I've been trying to find a bit more about artifact creation, but it's not a simple process. Or rather, I should say that there's a lot of different ways to make and things that artifacts can do, she said.

She smiled warmly and her cheeks turned slightly a different shade of pink as he called ehr an Ice Princess. The Dathomirian pipe is part of my meditation, she said. And I like the cold, I guess. Very different from Dathomir.

Caerllion smiled and blushed when Arla said that she was glad with him pursuing the Arcane studies. “Maybe someday my discoveries with sorcery would appear in a book.” he said, playfully. While it would be cool, the Acolyte still had much to learn before being capable of experimenting with his own rituals.

Yes. They are a long term danger to the Empire. The rumors even say that some of them seemed to be complaining about the execution of rebels.” while it could be a simple gossip, Caerllion thought that it was best to give these details to the Champion. After all, most rumors have a piece of truth on them. “I think that these cases are worth being investigated, before we end up having surprise defections.”

Artifact creation.” Caerllion muttered to himself, before having an idea. “I think that after finishing my studies about mind control, I’ll study this subject too. Perhaps there could be a way of using one of these ritual to make an object that allows us to slave the mind of some individuals.

It seemed to be a good idea, but a long time of study would be necessary before he could start doing it. He wondered if she would like to help him with it. “Maybe we could study together? I’m still an Acolyte, so we can stay in the theory until I’m prepared to go with the practical part. We could discuss it during a dinner.

Caerllion blinked, noticing that he basically asked her to have a date with him. “I mean, if you want that. I’ll understand if you don’t want to do that.” the Acolyte quickly said, while his cheeks got a bit red.

The Annfyn didn’t notice how Arla’s cheeks got pink, being distracted with how pretty her smile was. “I usually use the sound of an Annfyn harp to meditate, but my talents with it are average. My father plays it perfectly.” Caerllion thought about the music that his father used to make, with some being laments in memory of his wife.

The cold isn’t bad, but I prefer the moderate winters of my homeworld. They aren’t polar like Ziost.” while there was also snow in Annwfyn, it wasn’t the same as what could be seen on this planet. “There is even a Winter festival there. Maybe you could visit it someday.

Arla wasn't happy to hear about the Sith who were railing against the Sith's decision to execute terrorists. It was just typical, but she could only hope they would be found out and killed by the other Sith or even the Inquisitors. Better fewer, true Sith than a muddying of the waters with the lesser.

The fact that he had asked her out went right over her head as the concept of "dating" on Dathomir was pretty much nonexistent. Instead, Arla shrugged and added sure. Where is there even good food on this rock? Ziost wasn't particularly inhabited but there were bound to be on-base food options somewhere.

She pushed herself up to head off in search of just that and pressed past the variety of milling students as she did so.

Tell me about your world, she said after he suggested that she visit someday. Evidently it wasn't as cold as Ziost, but that wasn't really saying very much. What do you like to do there? she asked.

A bright smile appeared on Caerllion’s lips when he heard Arla accept his invitation to dinner. He couldn’t believe that the Champion had accepted it. The Annfyn felt like a happy child, being capable of even squeaking with happiness. In the end he was capable of controlling himself, but his smile remained.

Cool! There is a good restaurant in the Central District of New Adasta, we could go there.” while Ziost was covered by tundra, the capital of the planet still had a good number of inhabitants. With the Central District being located in a cave below the city, they would not suffer with the cold.

Annwfyn is a wonderful planet. It’s covered by green forests, but there are also some oceans. When my people fled from Thustra, they traveled through the Galaxy to find a new place to live.” the Acolyte said, remembering the stories that were told to him since he was a baby. “When they found this inhabited world, my ancestors called it Annwfyn. In our language, the Sidhe, this world means ‘World of Delights’.

My people found ways to live in harmony with our world, to the point of making buildings inside living trees. Annwfyn is so precious to us that few outsiders are allowed to see it surface, most visitors stay in a large space station called Tir na nÓg.” while he valued the traditions of his species, he thought that this one was a bit excessive. “But I can find ways for you to visit it one day.

Do you mean besides manipulating politicians and plotting my ascension to the throne?” he said playfully. However, it wasn’t a lie. The young Annfyn really spent some of his time doing exactly that. “I like to visit the fields of silver flowers in the Island of Rona, to participate in parties in the royal palace of Mag Mell and to walk in the trails made by my ancestors in the forests. You can see the beauty of the fauna and flora, feeling close to it."

My favorite was the one in the Golden Woods. I used to go there with my parents every weekend, until…” he trailed off, remembering the events of this fateful day. The day that his mother was killed. It was better to think of something else. “I also like to visit Tir na nÓg. Due to the number of outsiders living here, the space station have a good number of tourist attractions. When I’m here, I stay in my farm in Tir na nÓg. We produce the best golden apples here.

He could spend hours talking about his life in Annwfyn. There was so much to be said, but he wasn’t going to throw every detail at the Champion. She could think that it was boring. “How is Dathomir? What do you do here during your free time?

It sounded like he knew where to go, so she simply followed along, listening to what he described and envisioning it in her mind. It was, of course, different from Dathomir, but she recalled that it had its similarities from what he had told her about it before. Indeed, as she listened, it sounded like quite a pleasant place.

Sounds lovely, she said honestly. For a moment she bristled at the fact that off-worlders weren't allowed to visit the surface mostly because she didn't like to be told "no." She'd never liked it but fortunately she didn't have to hear it often. Then she realized that it was absurd for her to hold that opinion when off-worlders on her homeworld were executed on site simply for being there. Okay, fine, touché, she thought to herself.

She was interested in what he said, but her interest really increased when she felt the pain that shot through the Force as he nearly mentioned something. Even for all of her curiosity, she knew better than to press the question even though her curiosity was, of course, killing her.

One thing stood out to her above everything else, however. You miss your home, don't you? she asked. That was something she understood. She loved being out and exploring the galaxy. She loved seeing all there was to see, but she also missed her mother and her Sisters. She missed the sites and familiarities of home.

Free time? she said with a snicker. Her mother had made sure that her life had never been dull. Of course there had been free time, but it seemed scarce when placed against all the training and responsibilities she'd had. Not that she really minded. She'd loved learning about the Shadow and learning secrets. She loved secrets. There was something about knowing things that others didn't that she found... exhilarating. Of course, that wasn't what he had asked about, though.

I always loved to hunt and explore. Dathomir is full of excitement and danger, she said. There were many predators that haunted the planet and many ancient spirits and dangers of a magickal nature as well.

I also play the pipe, as you saw. And I like to carve things, she said. I actually carved my own pipe a few years ago, she said. Dathomir's wood was hard and quite difficult to carve, but it had readied her for working on softer and easier things now that she was in the rest of the galaxy.

Well, maybe more than I would like to admit.” while he could return to his planet at any moment, Caerllion still missed the familiarity of Annwfyn. When he was visiting another, the Acolyte couldn’t avoid making comparisons between it and his homeworld. Sometimes these would be even negative, but what he could do if few worlds could be perfect like Annwfyn.

My people rarely leave Annwfyn, only under certain conditions. It’s a great part of our culture.” the exceptions for an Annfyn to leave their homeworld were for work and maybe to study. Of course, there were those that were exiled by their families. “Due to that, we end up having a sense of nostalgia and longing. Always wanting to come back, even if left only for a few days.” he laughed, thinking how his species could be dramatic.

The Acolyte paid close attention to Arla’s answer to his question. While his species didn’t appreciate hunts, Caerllion still wondered how and what the Champion would hunt. With Dathomir being famous for its dangerous fauna, such practices should really be amazing to watch. She must have great strength and power to bring down such creatures.

You are amazing.” he said absently, taking only a second for him to notice it. “I-I mean, you are amazing at playing with the flute.” his entire face was red and his twitching ears gave up his embarrassment. “Your flute is also very well carved. My species also likes to do crafted works, especially jewels.” Caerllion was starting to wonder why he was reacting this way. Even when he had interest in other people, the Annfyn never acted so stupidly.

Would you like to go to New Adasta? We could walk in the city a bit before going to dinner.” he said, trying to change the subject of the conversation. “Have you ever been here? For the capital of a frozen world, it’s pretty decent.

Her eyebrow quirked at his comment, wondering if it had just been a slip of the tongue or if he really meant something else by it. Foreign cultures were very different from Dathomir, and that meant that men were far more... assertive with their desires. Not that he had been assertive in a bad way or really assertive at all, but there were some more radical Clans on Dathomir that wouldn't have responded well. Fortunately, Arla was not from one of those Clans.

Thank you, she said, pulling the pipe out and balancing it in her hand. We don't have many natural jewels on Dathomir, she said, though, of course, there were some. Many of them end up being worked into talismans and things like that, though, she said.

He mentioned going to New Adasta, and though she'd never been, her mind seemed to be someplace else for a moment.

I'm not sure I should go that far, she said. I still have some things I need to do here... she said, voice trailing off and still seeming distracted.

She contemplated asking him to help her for a moment, but thought better of it. What she was planning to do could get her in no small amount of trouble and she couldn't bring someone else into that mess.

I... uh... sorry, I probably shouldn't go to dinner after all, she said, frowning in thought.

Caerllion felt disappointed when Arla said that she wasn’t going to be able to have dinner with him. While he tried to not expose what he was feeling, the way that his ears got down would be a clue for how he felt at the moment. “No problem. It’s fine if you have something more important to do.

Besides his disappointment, the Annfyn was now curious as to what the Champion wanted to do in Ziost. With its library, the temple could be a good place to study a myriad of Force related subjects. Arla could be wanting to learn anything, maybe he could help her with it.

Would you allow me to help? Maybe by working together, we can finish your search faster and then have some free time to visit New Adasta.” even if they didn’t end up dining together, the Annfyn would still spend some more time with her. Besides having the opportunity of learning more with a more experienced Sith. “Do you mind having my help?

Arla took a moment to think, able to sense on his face and in the Shadow that he was disappointed. And then he asked to join her and she... didn't know what to say. What she was planning to do could get her in no small amount of trouble, and she couldn't ask him to do that.

Though, they had spent several weeks together on Columex and got to know each other quite well. Probably well enough to even loop him in on the mischief she was going to cause.

Her face didn't seem to twitch as these thoughts raced through her mind and after a moment she fixed her gaze squarely on him.

It could land us both in trouble so I can't ask you to do that, she said.

But if you were to follow me wherever I'm going, she said with a mischievous shrug and a half-smirk that now broke onto her lips.

But if you don't want trouble, I understand. Acolytes run on thinner ice than graduates, she said. All the more reason for him not to get involved, but she had a feeling that wouldn't stop him.

I don’t mind.” Caerllion said, faster than he thought that would be polite for a conversation. He wanted to show Arla that she could count with him on whatever thing that she had planned. Unless it was some type of treason, the Acolyte was certain that they would end up being able to avoid any possible punishment.

After our mission in Columex, I trust you. I believe that it was what made us work well together. Maybe today we can do that again.” it sounded sincere and hopeful, more than he had intended it to be. “Besides, I’ll not be an Acolyte for much more time. I decided to follow your advice and apply for my graduation. It’s going to happen in a few months.

I would follow you to any place.” he said, oblivious to how sincere he was sounding. The Acolyte really trusted Arla to participate in dangerous missions. With her knowledge and power, he was certain that they would avoid any mess and problem.

Arla was surprised he volunteereed so quickly to help her and a part of it made her wonder if this was a trap. That's ridiculous, she immediately countered in her own mind. If he was volunteering to help then she'd maybe be a fool to turn it down.

Okay, she said with a nod. I need to get... a peek at some old texts but they're restricted. Masters only in the off-limits archives, she said, and he would immediately begin to put together what she was suggesting.

Her heart raced a little just thinking about the proposal even now. She'd not figured out yet how to break into the vault, but she was confident it could be done. It wasn't designed to be secured against outside invasion only to keep out the curious Acolyte. But there were dangerous secrets kept inside.

There are two doors to get into the vault. I found an old journal from a former-acolyte about how to bypass the first but we'll need the Archive Keeper's key for the other, she said, which would be the picky part.

After what seemed to be an eternity, Arla finally agreed that Caerllion could help her. The Acolyte felt warm and a smile appeared on his lips. He would not make her regret having his presence, even because he was sure that if he did something wrong and ruined everything, she would kill him.

Caerllion paid close attention to Arla's explanation about her plans. He had heard about the off-limit part of the archives. Every one of the Sith Academies had one. These places were full with knowledge about the Dark Side that only the Masters were able to use in its full potential.

Besides it being an opportunity to help Arla. Entering that part of the archives could allow him to read more texts about sorcery, perhaps among them he would find more spells of mind control.

If the Academy here is like that of Korriban, the Archive Keeper will go to lunch at noon. They would close the place and go. Maybe we could search their office here while they are away. There is a chance that the key is left here.” while this plan was a bit risky, it could be a good beginning. “What do you think of it?"
