Question about main factions

so I understand the rule that you can't have two characters in different factions. But my question is does my character have to be part of one of the three factions? Or can my character be factionless?

You can make an independent that just flies around the galaxy solo or eventually joins up with one of the many independent fractions.

But can I have an independent AND a member of a faction?

Yup! They just can't end up in conflicting main factions. You can have one character (or two even) as a member of a main faction and one character (or two) as a member of an indie faction (or no faction at all). Or you can have all three characters in various indie factions.
