One thing I regret most about the previous timeline was my lack of involvement. I felt that the story had already run it's course and that any attempts at making any real impact would be futile. I suppose to an extent I felt 'overwhelmed' with the seemingly endless backstory and build up of legacies. I've made a promise with myself to be more involved in this timeline and get the full thrill of helping build a story. But here's one thing that I'd like to suggest, that would make involvement for myself and others much, much easier.

A record of every thread crucial to the development of the story, namely the war, which seems to be the main conflict for DOTR. While I'd love to, I don't have te time or motivation to read every single individual thread posted in the story board. A regularly updated 'timeline' would improve my own, and others ability to write in this new story.

I know the admins and FL's must be busy, and I apologize if I am adding to what must be a third piles worth of suggestions — but I truly believe a system like this would be worth it for everyone.

Ok, here's my good and my bad.

Bad: While I love this idea, I just don't think its pheasable. It would require either extreme coordination from the membership or an incalculable workload for the admins.

Good: I do, however, believe that this is less of a problem now. Last timeline had a set central story, making it harder to have large effects on the timeline. We don't have it this time. We do, however, have agreements among the indie factions to acknowledge accomplishments more, as well as more involvement Amongst the main factions.

A helpful way to make this a reality could be member involvement. Anything that is deemed important to the overall story can be 'flagged' or 'tagged' or hell manually inputted into a thread made specifically for the use of this idea.

IN FACT to take it a step further. Someone who is like me and can write summations of stories, or story lines into a consistent and well written post of one individual thread. For example; say there was an intense battle on one of the split planets, someone could read through the thread and summarize the events of said thread into a single post written in the style of an episodic story. Like an episode of clone wars, where they use names, and battles etc to explain what happened, again in the style of a story. Therein, we could again a style akin to the clone wars episodes have a non chronically set series of story plot updates in an area for members to read and get updated on the plot and individual goings on of the site. Inside of having to sift through the soon to be NUMEROUS amounts of posts.

Just a thought. I liked the initial idea and saw a way to shrink it to a manageable size. In fact I am so behind you on this. If this is approved for a test run, i volunteer to be the first dummy, and I mean that literally and figuratively to summarize a thread to be used as an example for that idea.

Being involved in big battles or reactions to catastrophes always helped create a very cohesive environment between rpers. I'd suggest doing things like that or getting involved in high stake missions. Last timeline, everything started small and then built up to be big. While a central story like we had last timeline isn't a great idea, this timeline at least the building up part can apply. That way you have that backstory/foundation laid out for wherever your story goes from there. Even if something doesn't seem like it's a big impact at the time, remember, it always can later.

@Aurek I can say that I totally know where you're coming from with this and I completely agree that if we could find some way to make it manageable it would be awesome to have. The biggest issue is of course the time required to update it and deeming what's important enough to be put on it. @Brayden Kore I love your ideas and was thinking along the same lines you were.

So what I'm picturing is like an actual timeline, right like you see in kid's social studies/history books showing the rise and fall of x dynasty in china/etc/etc? So there would be a visual timeline with dots and the name of the event/when it happened. Then either below it or if you click on the link it brings you to a post that hits the main points of all the threads pertaining to that event. Making sense? So DotR is based all around this war and there's a map with grid squares to be conquered which is where most of the drama for main factions is going to be centered. So for example when a grid square has been won, that would be a major event and would earn a place on the timeline. A dot with the name of the grid square won, who won it, maybe the name of the battle fought, and when it happened would be on the timeline. Then in one single post would be the outlines of all the threads leading up to the battle (like these missions everyone's doing right now) and then the battle itself. Basic facts of what went down, stuff like that.

Anyway that's just what I was thinking, but I definitely like this idea. It'd be cool if something like that could actually happen though I understand it's a lot of work for anyone involved.

Good ideas, it'd be an awesome resource to have. Perhaps there could be a faction dedicated to the holonet, broadcasting the news of the galaxy like any real world news network with weekly threads recording any major events.

Anyway, like @Outlander said it might be a little this would put a lot of pressure on those in charge of it. Just throwing it out there because it's something I'd eventually love to see on here.

Actually, on the subject of holonets, several factions and Indies run their own IC and OOC newsletters. There are also plans to eventually make a combined indie IC/OOC newsletter.

Now THAT is a great idea. That would instantly erase the issue of the fact that admins/mods/FLs all have a lot on their plates already.

Isn't someone making a game show host character? They could be involved in something like that too.

...

Okay I'm seriously considering this right now. I wonder if many people would be as well?

...

I'm sensing an interest thread in my future.

In reference to past concerns of the original topic, I thnk it is important for anyone who RPs to focus on writing stuff they enjoy with people they enjoy. You will find that some people really don't care to read what other characters are up to or keep up with stories. Some becuase they don't have time, and some becuase people are selfish on basic level.

Just continue to write and write with as many different people as possible. In time, you will find that you have a large group of people and you will be tied to their stories in a deep and meaningful way. Those personal connections can be just as rewarding as being "The biggest player"

I found that when I was starting to get involved heavily with the Jedi last time line that reading some of the other Jedi's stuff and asking them if I could be involved in what they were doing was a good way to 1. Show interest in other's work and 2. Make those connections both IC and OOC.

As far as making a list of important battle threads and what, I believe there is a way to search a fourm for threads labeled as "Main Threads". Other than that it just takes some dedication and to be informed. Browse through a thread a day and jot down some notes. It really doesn't take all that long and have a while you would better than the vast majority of people what was going on.
