Ori Ardell

Excerpt · Biography · Personality · Skills and abilities · Equipment

Ori Ardell is a human male Jedi Padawan, born on Baraan-Fa. The son of farmers, his mother died in childbirth and his father passed away only a few years after. Left alone, he was taken in by an orphanage. Despite a rough upbringing, after the realisation of his sensitivity to the Force and having heard tales of the Jedi Order, Ori booked passage on a transport off Baaran-Fa with the hope of starting a new life.

Biography

After his mother, Lila, died in childbirth, Ori was left in the care of his father, Jalon Ardell. Grief-stricken and left alone to tend to a baby and a failing farm, Jalon was not prepared for his new responsibilities. In the years following Lila's death, Jalon began drinking heavily and gambling even heavier, soon enough, their land was repossessed by debtors with Jalon and his son being turfed out onto the streets. Recognising his ability to care for his child, Jalon handed Ori over to the local authorities, who in turn handed Ori over to the local orphanage where he was raised. Things did not get better for Jalon Ardell, who passed away only a few years later from ill health.

Ori lived with little memory of his life before the orphanage, only vague images of his father remained in his mind and so, all he knew was the place in which he was raised. He soon came to realise that he could not rely on those that ran the orphanage to provide him and the other children with adequate care. Ori learned to be self-reliant the difficult way and thievery quickly become a daily activity in order to have enough food. It was a tough life, but it kept him and the other orphanage residents alive. True, it wasn't much of a life, but it beat the alternative.

However, on his eighteenth birthday, whatever life he had managed to built came to an end. Adulthood had come and with it, his time at the orphanage was over and Ori found himself truly alone for the first time in his life. He had nowhere to go and nobody to reach out to. He was alone, and angry. Frustrated with the world, with the cards he'd been dealt, he hadn't asked for anybody for this, nobody had asked Ori Ardell if he'd like to live the rest of his life in poverty. So he wasn't going to.

The plan was simple, steal from a rich person's house, pawn the valuables and return to the orphanage triumphant, liberate all his old friends and ditch Baaran-Fa for some core world like Coruscant, where they could all grow old playing Pazaak and drinking Andoan wine. However, things did not go as smoothly as he hoped. A silent alarm was triggered as soon as he broke in and Ori had only managed to snatch a single necklace before he was confronted with an officer who had been dispatched to inspect the disturbance.

It all came flooding back for Ori. The anger, the frustration. All he had always wanted was a simple, peaceful life and he was being forced to steal. Now he was going to be arrested, locked up with the key thrown away. Put in a hole so the world could forget about him. Before he even realised what was happening, the officer who was bearing down on him was thrown across the room into the wall opposite.

Afterwards, Ori did the only thing he felt he could do, he ran. He pawned the one piece of jewellery he had managed to steal and was left with enough to purchase a place on a transport ship leaving Baaran-Fa, albeit, the cheapest one there was. With no idea of what to do next but with the newfound knowledge of his connection to the Force, Ori resolved to travel to wherever the Jedi where, hoping he could find a new life and peace within their Order.

Personality

Despite how his life has turned out so far, Ori comes across as an optimist. He was forced to be, being raised as an orphan in an impoverished area afforded him many opportunities to give up but he survived the hardships he endured through a belief that if he just kept going, things would eventually turn around. Also, from Ori's point of view, things usually couldn't get much worse than they already were, so for him, the only way is up. Underneath the surface however, there is someone who is angry at the world and resentful of the things that have happened to him.

Ori has also displayed a tendency towards being reckless, often putting himself into dangerous situations without thinking things through completely. He is somewhat naive, generally and also in regards to the wider galaxy, owed to his general lack of education and access to information about the worlds beyond Baaran-Fa.

Skills and abilities

Pickpocketing- Throughout Ori's time living at the orphanage there have been many instances of there simply not being enough food to go around. Not wanting to go hungry, from a young age Ori took to pick-pocketing people for credits, or other items he could sell, to buy food.

Stealth- As he got older Ori took on more responsibility in looking after the younger children and newcomers in the orphanage, in doing so he quickly realised the money he earned through pick-pocketing wasn't enough to feed everybody and he took to breaking and entering to find enough food for everybody.

Improvisation- On occasion, sometimes even the most well thought out breaking and entering can go awry. Ori is good at adapting when situations turn out of his favour, a useful skill when trying to avoid the authorities, or angry homeowners.

BIOGRAPHY
After suffering moderate injuries on a mission to pacify a Sith tomb on Dxun alongside his then master Maxims Tionson, Ori remained at the temple on Ajan Kloss during his recuperation but came to the decision to leave the Jedi Order not long after he was fully recovered. Having lacked self-belief since childhood, Ori came to believe he didn't have what it took to be a Jedi. After all, he and Maxims had met by chance, and his decision to join the Jedi had ultimately been a sheer coincidence, not some preordained destiny.

Upon leaving the order, Ori had the choice to return to Baraan-Fa or keep traveling the galaxy. In the end, he chose the latter, realizing there wasn't really anything on his homeworld for him to go back to and he was unsure as to whether he could still be wanted for breaking and entering. Probably not, but why take the chance. A slew of different planets and different jobs followed, never aiming to settle down anywhere, Ori eventually saved up enough credits to afford a down payment on his own ship.

Still wanting to keep traveling the galaxy, he found work as an independent courier and stuck with it. Truthfully, it was the perfect job to keep outrunning his past and his perceived failures. There had been much tragedy since the day he left the order, the old temple on Ajan Kloss had been destroyed, Max was dead, and many more. There was a Sith Empire now and a deadly virus spreading through the Galaxy.

Not that those things were Ori's problems anymore, he had cargo to deliver.

Personality
No longer much of an optimist but Ori couldn't really be considered a pessimist these days either. He is apathetic towards most things and current events, at least outwardly. He is less naive than he used to be, having traveled the galaxy by himself for some years and experiencing different planets and cultures. Ori is also not as prone to reckless behavior as he was when he was younger and prefers to weigh up his options before rushing into a decision. He still remains friendly towards new people but is less interested in getting to know strangers.

The choice he made to leave the Jedi and the later death of Maxims Tionson weigh on his mind. Whether rightly or wrongly, Ori has developed a form of survivor's guilt over his past decisions. As a result, he lives a simple, drifter lifestyle and tries to avoid any major life decisions or conflicts having convinced himself he will make the wrong decisions which will affect other people in negative ways.

Skills
Any abilities Ori had begun to hone as a Jedi Padawan have long since degraded, having not swung a lightsaber in years. Similarly, his connection to the Force has grown weaker in the intervening years, and feats he would have once found easy would put greater strain on him now, that is if he cared to use the Force. In place of these skills, Ori has become a proficient pilot since his job requires him to be so and seeking other means of self-defense, he has developed into a decent marksman with his blaster pistol.

Equipment
+ Standard datapad and comlink
+ Lightsaber with a cracked blue crystal, in a state of disrepair and unusable
+ A degraded set of Jedi Wanderer robes stored in a trunk on his ship
+ DL-44 heavy blaster pistol
+ 3-Z light freighter

Solid beginning to the character. I look forward to seeing how he pursues the path of the Jedi. Only thing I would recommend is adding a section in the character bar for Reputation: Unknown. As you roleplay the character and become more involved in the events of the galaxy you will have the opportunity to raise your reputation level.
