Our government can't stop arguing with each other. If we get the Americans to do something, guess who'll follow?

So now you just need a black guy and a Mormon to run against each other. Which I think may be the premise of a joke. It takes place in a bar, but y'know... Ireland.

Not a fan of individual mandate, but this bill has quite a few other bonuses built in, so its a plus overall I suppose.

I've been rereading the decision and good god the arguments against the commerce power basis for the individual mandate are incredibly stupid.

Most arguments surrounding this topic are incredibly stupid.

There's been speculation that Roberts changed his vote at the last minute because Scalia's dissent, perhaps originally a majority opinion (given how it was written, it probably was), scared Roberts off and made him switch to the tax view of the mandate and uphold it.

I lost two friends that day: America and Justice Roberts.

Except the people making this argument happen to be highly experienced jurists who are more intelligent than the vast majority of people.

@Bac: I wouldn't be surprised. I've followed the Chief Justice's career and met plenty of men like him. White-shoe business guy. He has a fair enough allegiance to the law, but he's as political as they come.

Apparently there are twitter comments of "I'M MOVING TO CANADA" because of this Court decision. I lol'd so hard.

Out of curiosity, how many people here have actually read this bill? I don't just mean part of it; I mean all of it.

You back for a bit or are you just popping in for a comment before leaving like a gust of wind?

I generally don't post much because I don't have time to RP anymore, I don't wish to get into full out arguments/debates, I don't like giving away personal information, and I try to avoid posting without a reason. So regretfully I'm more of a lurker. If I had more time irl and people where receptive of me, I'd be active.

The reason I asked the question is because of how long the bill is. It's over 2000 pages of information (exactly 2409 from the PDF I have of it). Summaries don't really tell the full story, because as a law every line of every page must be followed as written. So, unless every line has been read, it cannot be said that you fully understand what the bill does. Perhaps I'm speaking for myself in all of what I'm saying. However, I doubt that many people have thoroughly read this bill. I've read physics textbooks that are less crunchy than this bill (which I haven't even come close to finishing, nor do I feel the inspiration to crunch my way through - and I know that I know very little about the bill from it, minus the biased summaries from those who claim to have read it all).

And that's a reasonable claim. Very few people are actually equipped to interpret legalese. I will note that the final version that really needs to be read is the one after Deem and Pass and reconciliation, which stripped out some passages regarding elder care, as well as changing certain Medicare opt-in/out mechanisms for the states (which the Supreme Court nixed in its decision anyhow.) I will also note that interpreting certain passages are not as straightforward. A lot of the claims with regards to Medicaid expansion is open to interpretation, and some of the regulations for administrative costs/procedures for the private sector have been left vague (as should be with a law, but will likely make regulatory capture inevitable.)
