This will be news to most admins since I only came up with this plan like an hour ago, but I think we're going to do an announcement soon outlining our idea for the Mandalorian storyline. It won't be the same as the Moraband/Sith thread, where everything there was locked in place, but rather "this is our idea, tell us what you think."

That way if Mando players hate it, we don't spend a lot of time developing it.

looking forward to this

For the most part, how will we be handling ships? Are we going to hand wave in most/all Legends ships despite their legends invention date? Or is this going to be a very tedious process of selecting one that was around then?

If we're NOT handwaving in all the old legacies ships, or even some of them, that leaves us with a very SLIM list for ships we can pick from when creating new characters, before OC ships have been submitted to the tech boards.

I will be doing a technology announcement after the Think Tank announcement, which I believe @Brandon Rhea will be doing.

Do races that existed pretty much solely in the EU universe still exist in this new timeline, or do we need a write-up for them this time around?
There have been talks that some of the more popular Legends species will be returning next timeline, but to say which ones is a matter for the think tank

I just wanted to quickly make note of something, since I think a few people are getting misled at the moment by the timeline title (which is understandable).

The timeline won't initiially be about the formation of the Republic. The Republic, as it stands in terms of the beginning of the timeline, is the Old Republic, which has been in numerous conflicts with the Sith and has existed for millenia. The timeline will depict the fall of this Old Republic, and (depending obviously on the RP) will cover the galactic dark age between the fall of the Old Republic and the rise of the next Republic - the Galactic Republic that stood for a thousand years until the end of the Clone Wars, eventually becoming the Galactic Empire. In short, this is the Republic before the Republic of the movies.

Obviously, how events pan out will be up to the RP and how you guys handle the story, but it's important to note that Dawn of the Republic will, at least initially, cover the decline and fall of the Republic.

And yeah, I know the title's confusing at first, but once we get into the birth of the Republic it'll make more sense. We're looking at giving the sub-timeslines (ie what we now refer to as pre- and post- timeskips) their own names to add some clarity to the situation, but that's still a point of discussion.

Anyway, hope that clears things up. Be sure to keep this in mind while you're drafting concepts.

Can we expect the arrival of the long awaited, long coveted, long time in the making, [PRIVATE] Tag?

A wall of private or closed threads are uninviting to new members. I do not see this coming back. Now, an argument may be mad that the Ask threads are already like that but that is not accurate. Anyone can ask to join an Ask thread. True, it is up to the thread creator whether they accept the request, but nothing is stopping people from asking. You'll never be able to join if you never ask. Ask threads have not mutated into Closed or Private threads; people just have not been asking.

I disagree. No one's asking because the lack of a private tag has turned ask threads into private threads. Essentially, not having a Private tag has changed the meaning of the Ask tag.

I remember when I first joined, the tags actively mislead me about threads. No, a bunch of private threads might not be inviting, but it's inherently more honest.

I agree they're more honest, but I think they're trying to nudge RPers away from making so many Ask/Private threads to begin with. I could also be interpreting this stuff wrongly as well, but I was under the impression that the admins don't want the Private tags because they want people to stop having their characters isolated in officially or unofficially private threads.

In short, be more open with your threads.

We want to nudge people away from closed threads, but we've made no decision on whether or not [CLOSED] will come back.

But that leads me into another issue: Open Threads.

They suck.

So no one makes them.

I also feel that the Ask tag somewhat puts the thread creator on the spot in the off chance that someone does ask to join. Now, instead of having a thread that is clearly private for whatever reason, the thread creator is being required to justify why their thread is a private venture between them and any other previously involved players.

That in itself is a bit unfair and, as an expansion on what Outlander said, gives the wrong impression of the community as a whole. An Ask thread theoretically looks inviting if all you have to do is ask to join. But it has been my experience that many, many, many Ask threads are actually private threads unless the thread creator goes out of their way to make special mention of it being open to so many players beforehand.

Ask remain ask. Many people may indeed treat them as private threads but it doesn't change the fact people can ask. I personally am against a private tag as it makes the exclusion finale. So what if many say no? Asking is still an option. In my opinion there should always be options to include others.

But the fact does remain that very few if any use them in this capacity, making the tag misleading and outdated in its use. Personally, as a new player, I found it worse asking to join a thread and being rejected because it was actually a private thread than just knowing that its a private thread. It makes new players feel like they've made a mistake, when it was actually no ones fault since the thread couldn't be appropriately tagged.

The reason I personally stopped using the open tag was because how many random people just popped up my thread. This one time we had 3 Sith, 2 Imperials, 2 Jedi and 2 Indies. It was madness. Open tags go really overboard

Sometimes the madness is fun. Some of the best threads I've read were [OPEN]. Dark Heart comes to mind. It was probably the best kickstart to a timeline ever.

I agree that some aren't very fun. A creator of an [OPEN] thread should list clear rules to prevent it from falling into chaos.
