I do not necessarily agree. Batman is a man and a symbol, but those he inspires are just as important.

Batman's not half as unhinged as he needs to be to give Robin a real purpose.

That's the duality of their relationship - Batman is the father Robin had had taken away from him as much as Robin represents the child that Bruce Wayne was never able to be.
