As Vardon kept his center of gravity directly above Rao’s upper torso, the defender’s breathing started getting ragged and labored. When he caught Vardon’s arm, his grip was already taxed and his breathing was becoming increasingly difficult by the second. That wasn’t even taking into account the savage beating he was taking to his side. He knew he had to capitalize on his temporary advantage before he let Vardon take it back. ‘I need to get out from underneath this guy or he’s gonna beat me into a coma.’ The Mandalorian thought to himself before constructing a plan.

He would let his opponent’s arm loose and assuming that Vardon would want to regain his distance advantage by sitting up, Rao would throw a hard left hand directly into his now exposed gut, which would be quite close to Rao considering that his opponent’s straddling him above his torso. If Rao could stun him in that moment, he would try to slide himself back up to where he could breathe without problem. Otherwise, if Rao’s plan were to fail, he’d retreat into a block until Vardon beat him into tapping out.

Just as the cadet thought, Vardon quickly tried to get into a more upright position after his arm was released. The idea was to quickly commence an assault with his liberated limb, both to tire out his opponent and to tie up his arm which would be needed by the Cadet to defend himself. Almost as soon as he sat upright and prepared to throw the punch, however, the Thyferran could feel Rao's fist connect with his gut.

Pain seared through the padawan's abdominal area, making him unable to act for the briefest of moments. Still, it was obvious that his experienced opponent had just succeeded with his plan as the man had now managed to slip further up, which undermined his previously rather large advantage. He was truly impressed by Rao's ability to escape the sticky situation but knew that it was well within the man's capabilities and refused to be demoralised by the impressive feat. Leaving himself open for an attack was however, something which he hoped to avoid in the future.

Leaving his legs planted firmly in the floor, the padawan allowed his left arm to keep punching the cadet's side, knowing that it would force the man to defend himself eventually. At the same time, he kept his right arm free in front of his gut and ready to counter offenses made by Rao.
