New character limit

The staff has come up with a new RP character limit, and we'd like your input before moving ahead with it:

As of May 29, 2010, players are only allowed a total of ten (10) role-playing characters at one time. Should a player wish to create additional characters, they must retire or put on hold as many characters as they wish to create.

Remember, the RP Profiles board is a board to post characters for actual use, not just to create characters for the sake of creating characters. Creating new characters is great! However, characters for the sake of characters is best left for the Fan Works board or the Star Wars Fanon wiki.

This rule does not apply retroactively. Any user who currently has more than the allowable number of characters is free to keep said characters. However, that is the absolute maximum they are allowed to use. As with normal circumstances, if a user in that position wishes to create additional characters, they must retire or put on hold as many characters as they wish to create.

I'm for it. No one can rp ten characters, I can barely keep up with the few I have now.

Personally, I don't think a character limit is necessary. I haven't seen it become a major problem among the members, with a few exceptions. I know that with a full stable of ten characters, it'd be hard to keep them all active at once. However, it's very nice to have because you can juggle characters. As a thread with one character ends, you join another thread with a different character, preventing you from ever getting too bored with the RP because you're always being given the oppurtunity to do something new.

Now, that said, I do think that the massive spamming of character profiles that's occured here lately is a bit ridiculous. I know some people just love making profiles, but I'm getting incredibly tired of seeing characters pop up, get used for half a thread, then fall into disuse... If they're even used at all. However, personally, I don't think it really hurts anything. Yes, it makes an abundance of character threads in the character boards, but I don't think that hurts us too much. Sure, older characters get pushed down in the board by newer, spamfest characters, but those older characters can still be found with a quick search.

Anyways, if a character limit is to be imposed, I think 10 is a perfectly reasonable number. As Ru said, and from personal experience, it's all but impossible to truly keep 10 characters active at once on a site like the SWRP. If you had ten characters in ten threads, it'd be a massive chore to keep up with all ten of those threads, even if you only posted once in each thread a day. So, yeah; a limit of ten seems pretty reasonable.
