DESCRIPTION
The Nebula-class star destroyer is a heavy capital ship originally developed by a joint venture between the state-owned Republic Engineering Corporation and Kuat Drive Yards for the New Republic Navy. Entering service shortly before the Hosnian Cataclysm, the Nebula class was developed in response to the severe downsizing of the navy in the decades after the Galactic Civil War. Conceived as a smaller, more efficient warship which could handle the long-range patrol and force projection duties then being handled by older, larger designs, many of which had been inherited from the Galactic Empire after its defeat. As such, they were seen as much as a change of image for the navy, as well as a chance to build a new generation of capital ships which were better suited to the challenges then facing the New Republic.

1,040 meters in length, the Nebula-class star destroyer is roughly 65% the length of the old Imperial II class, its direct predecessor and the primary star destroyer of the Galactic Empire. Despite this, it is meant to go toe-to-toe with the older, larger design, incorporating redundant backup shields, heavy doonium armor plating and a diverse armament, including a multitude of missile and torpedo launchers which can do serious damage to enemy capital ships. Due to advances in automation, the ship's crew is significantly smaller than earlier vessels of the star destroyer classification, an attractive option for the post-GCW New Republic Navy, which faced severe personnel cutbacks.

Nebula-class star destroyers retain the spearhead profile of older Imperial-era vessels, but have more rounded edges, rather than the harsh angles of their predecessors. They also incorporate a flush-mounted bridge, an improvement over the somewhat exposed command tower used by older designs. Also, in keeping with New Republic doctrine, the Nebula can function as a decent carrier, with a capacity of 60 starfighters or light starbombers and 12 shuttles.

Nebula-class star destroyers were built primarily to replace older Imperial designs, but had only begun to do so before the destruction of most of the New Republic Fleet at Hosnian Prime by the First Order. Indeed, most of the Nebulas which had been built up to that point were destroyed in the Hosnian Cataclysm; a number which had been under construction were completed in time to take on the First Order during their invasion of the Galaxy, acquitting themselves reasonably well.

In the present day, Nebula-class star destroyers are relatively rare. After Chancellor Calrissian's postwar reforms and the dissolution of the New Republic Navy in favor of defense coalitions, the Nebulas were distributed to the defense forces of a number of member worlds, where most remain.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Nebula-class star destroyers are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities. Even then, they are ridiculously expensive to operate; only a relatively large faction or decently well-off planetary government would be able to afford it without swiftly bankrupting themselves. An individual would stand no chance.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from Legends canon into our site's fanon.

RESTRICTIONS
Nebula-class star destroyers are large capital ships with heavy weapons, and capital ships cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They may be acquired as a faction asset with staff oversight.
