Miraluka Mishap

It was a cool day on Nemeira; light rainfall and a subtle breeze blowing around. It was late in the afternoon, and most people had found shelter from the rain; some stayed home, some went to a bar to chat with friends, and the less fortunate had to go to work. Few people were willing to walk around in the rain, and even fewer enjoyed it. But Nol Haal, a young, force sensitive Kel Dor was taking a stroll outside near a lake. Nol enjoyed the rain; the cool liquid on his skin, keeping his robes less than dry and seeing the light refract through it sometimes. It was very relaxing for him, soothing, even. The sounds of rain splashing onto puddles and metal, the feeling of cool drops gathering on his shoulders, it was perfect to him. He didn't realize he'd be spending much more time than he wanted in water.

After half an hour of wandering around, looking at the plants that grew near the lake and talking to joggers that didn't mind the rain, Nol got to a dock on the lake. Sometimes, when it wasn't raining, he'd see a Twi'lek painting the lake, or a Mon Cala couple laughing and hugging on the dock benches. Nol was there often when he wasn't working; he was there even more since his brother's "incident". As he stood there, looking out over the surface of the lake, he could see something was wrong. Something, or someone, was splashing around in the water, and it didn't look like it was their choice. Nol took one moment to take off his robes and and boots before diving into the lake after this person. He swam up to them and grabbed them, and pulled them up onto the dock where he sat them down onto the ground in front of a bench. After checking and making sure they weren't choking on water, he asked,
"Hello, sir, are you alright? What happened?"

Jyn Rayder was having a normal day for the most part. He was trying to relax for a change. He had been practicing Makashi since the morning and he needed to unwind now. His stomach had always dictated his actions so he went over to a local restaurant with pretty good food. Jyn was a carnivore all the way, skipping the soup & salad and tearing into the steak he ordered. After eating his sides and a slice of cake as dessert, he was feeling satisfied and left the restaurant. He was walking around the lake, and realized the sun was getting low. Unfortunately for Jyn it was also raining. He hated water in almost any form, his only toleration came in the form of refreshers. He obviously was no swimmer.

However, it would've been a neat skill to have at the moment. He was on the pier on the lake, enjoying the calming sounds of the water crashing onto shore. It was a complete surprise when a local teen around Jyn's age, doing so on a dare, pushed the blind padawan into the water. He was instantly freezing, and panicking. He was well under the surface kicking and thrashing helplessly to try and get a much needed breath. He barely maintained his head above the water, sucking in as much air as water, only making it worse. He was slowly drifting away from the pier and was beginning to think a silly prank was going to kill him. He took a final breath as his head completely sank under the surface, he was now arrested by the cold water. Finally, he stopped thrashing around in the water having lost his energy. His lungs burned from the effort of holding his breath.

He released his breath, completely giving up, letting water full his mouth and begin to drown him. Just as the world was slipping away, he vaguely felt a tug and in a matter of seconds he was back in the air and on hard ground. He was soaked, and continued to be with the rain, but after coughing up a good amount of water he calmed his breathing. Between the sputtering of water and coughs he said "Thanks, *cough* you saved my- ch, life." He began taking deeper breaths, realizing how close he was to dying.

"Possibly. I'm just glad you're alright. Do you have anywhere to go to dry off? Are you injured?"
Nol's voice was full of concern, and at the back of his mind he was angry. He had seen the young quarren boys standing around laughing and another running away, but he hadn't thought they would have done this. He was frustrated, but he kept his mind focused on the man who almost died in front of him.

Jyn shook his head "Don't worry, I'm fine now. I just, give me a sec, k?" He steadied his pulse. Slowly but surely he came back to reality. He wasn't dead, and he wasn't a floating corpse in a lake. His face was plastered in his own hair which he lifted his hand to brush back with his fingers. It was at that point he realized he had lost his headpiece. The band of fabric that covered his empty eye sockets typical of a Miraluka was gone. It was about as much a part of him as his nose and ears. Turning back to the lake, he could feel the faint Force signature still in the lake. Quickly, he reached his hand out and used the Force to wrap an invisible hand around it, pulling it out of the water into his hand. It was soaked and needed to be dried, but he put it on anyways to cover his eye sockets which he had been told looked freaky to those with eyes. A little too late he noticed he had just used the Force in front of a stranger, and Jedi weren't the most popular people in the galaxy right now.

Nol was going to say more, but he paused when Jyn started using the force. The no eyes thing hadn't bothered him- he had seen a miraluka in the bar before. But...using these powers...Nol only knew of two others who could do these things as he could, Feng and Acodi. In a hushed tone, he asked,
"What you just did, that was...the, uh, force, right? You're...a Jedi?"

IC: Jyn titled his head towards the alien, he could tell that much by his speak. He didn't need to tilt his head, but it added to the effect of 'looking' at him. Jyn was still working on his Force Sight, something that should come natural to him, but since he was raised by his human father, it wasn't as easy as it was for other Miraluka. The alien stuttered his question, maybe in shock. Using his limited Force Sight, Jyn started to get colors and shapes, soon getting the image of a Kel Dor, which ally oozed the same to him so he didn't need to exert himself to see details. Choosing his words carefully, just in case this guy wasn't jedi friendly, he said "I'm a smuggler. I can use the Force. That so hard to believe?" He wasn't denying being a jedi, but he want saying eh was one either.

 

[Venk]

The disappointment would carry through Nol's voice.
"Oh...okay. I met a Jedi before, I was hoping he could...train me. Sorry, you probably didn't need or want to hear that."
Nol stood back and put his boots and robes back on.
"Stay safe, then. I should probably go, get back to...stuff..."

Jyn turned his head towards him surprised. He didn't know many brave enough to mention they wanted to train as a jedi. He figured at this pont he should be honest, after all he's be dead without the Kel Dor. "I guess I should introduce myself. He said, extending a hand to the man. "I'm Keith Rayder, call me Jyn. Jedi Padawan here on Nemeira."

 

[Venk]

Nol looked at Jyn dubiously before shaking his hand.
"I guess there's a good reason you lied earlier? Actually, nevermind. I'm just glad I've found another Jedi! I can finally get off this planet, join the order, and get away from...here."
He stopped talking for a moment and stared off across the lake before he resumed speaking.
"If you'd like to rest, there's a bar nearby. I live in a space above it, and its where the rest of my stuff is. We can go there, I'll grab my things and we can go to...wherever you'd be willing to take me. Is that ok?"

Jyn nodded patiently, as it seemed the Kel Dor had more than enough things on his plate without having to save Jyn from drowning. He laughed a bit to himself. "Friendly advice, don't always be open about who and what you are, the Galaxy isn't the most forgiving right now to jedi. Plus, I didn't lie. I am a smuggler, and I can use the Force. So no lie. But you don't need to 'get off this planet', heck I can't imagine a better place than here." Either way, Jyn nodded as they went off towards the Kel Dor's living quarters

Nol looked confused at Jyn's remarks on the galaxy's feelings towards the Jedi. He thought the Jedi were the good guys, protecting people, saving planets...that kinda stuff. As he walked with Jyn, he decided to ask him about it.
"What did you mean, the galaxy isn't forgiving to Jedi? I thought they were...you know, the peacekeepers? The good guys? And, what did you mean, stay here? There aren't other Jedi here...are there?"
Nol went quiet as he thought about Feng's wild behavior and Acodi's visit.

He was kidding right? Jyn came to the conclusion the Kel Dor was naïve in this respect. With a calm voice he replied "Yes, the Jedi are protectors of peace and do-goodies and all that stuff, but if you've noticed the Jedi aren't in control. The Sith are, and with all the crap the Order's been through, it's not exactly the best time to be a Jedi. But someone's gotta do it. Some of them are right here on Nemeira. A few padawans and two Knights, Kai Sera and the one I've talked to Jade Evoyn. They're not too far from here."

 

[Venk]

Nol looked surprised at what Jyn had been telling him. A customer at the bar working at, Hessarn, always said that the Jedi were extremely powerful...but what did he know? He was just another drunk Quarren. Eventually they reached the building Nol lived in...and it wasn't pretty. One of the windows had spiderweb cracks in it, the door was missing a hinge, the sign was missing most of its letters, and pieces of wood, glass and stone were everywhere.
"Well...here we are. Let me just run inside, I'll get my stuff and be right back." And with that, Nol ran inside, and came back a few minutes later, wearing a backpack and his shin and wristguards. In his hand, he held something wrapped in paper, and he held it tightly. He had managed to get some credits from the register as well, leaving him with 47 credits for petty cash."Alright...I've got my stuff. Where to?"

IC: Jyn waited patiently, not caring much about the shabbiness of the room since he had nor the time nor energy to see details right now. It took a minute or so, but finally the Kel Dor returned with his stuff. "Well, I think you've happened upon one of the best places to be a jedi, my friend. There's literally a resort not too far from here where the two Knights I mentioned have 'set up shop' so to speak. They've got food and rooms and a whole bunch of stuff. It'll only take a few minutes to get there by landspeeder, I have one not far from here. Let's go." With that,Jyn left the old place and found the Landspeeder he had rented, using it to drive towards the resort.

IC: Nol was glad to finally be out of that hellhole bar and into a new life as a Jedi padawan. He hopped onto the back of the speeder while Jyn drove to this "resort" he had mentioned.
"Who were these Jedi Knights again? You had said there were two of them, and another padawan, right?"

IC: Jyn nodded. "Actually, more than one padawan, I forgot how many specifically. The Knights are Kai Sera and Jade Evoyn. Jade's blind like me, she's nice. I haven't spoken to Kai yet, but he seems like an alright sort. Well here we are." He said, pulling up to the jedi haven. It was extremely fortunate for any jedi to be here, it was just like a tropical resort with exquisite views, when it wasn't raining of course.

Nol stepped of the speeder and admired the Jedi's base. He had hoped to leave Nemeira, but as long as he got to be with other Jedi, he felt better. He dusted off his robes and began walking towards it, eager to start his life here. He wanted to make friends, use the force, get a light saber again...he just hoped Feng wouldn't find them here.
