Once again, it's not about believing in God or the afterlife. It's about recognizing the fact that you're going to die some day and naturally wondering if there's something after that. Whether you come to believe in something after or not is up to you.

Im pretty sure that most people seriously think about that by the time they are around eight. :/

But isn't that usually when you're like, 12? I think it can already be assumed that the majority of if not all soldiers have thought about what comes after death without asking them. Kinda like asking a thirteen year old if he... y'know... likes... starbucks...

Neither of those is correct.

There's a difference between knowing that you're going to die in 80 years and seriously considering the question of your own mortality. 8 and 12 year olds do not do that.

So if you're an Atheist, you are immature and you don't consider your mortality?

So you're saying that unless you believe in an afterlife you are doomed to immaturity? :CIsee
Well I don't believe in an afterlife, and do I seem immature? :CHappy

I will murder you both if that was a serious question, because I've already clarified that about a bagillion times in this thread. I don't understand why people are having such a hard time grasping what I'm saying here.

I do not give two shits whether or not you believe in the afterlife. That has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm saying. For the final time, I AM TALKING ABOUT PONDERING THE POSSIBILITY OF AN AFTERLIFE AFTER RECOGNIZING FULLY YOUR OWN MORTALITY REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT YOU COME TO A YES OR NO ANSWER ABOUT THE AFTERLIFE.

But that's just it. One who comes to the answer of "no" I would assume would not be a believer, and yet you said earlier that you must have a sense of spirituality be more or less mature... Or not, I forgot what this was about! :CHappy

No. I never said that. In fact, I made it clear in multiple posts that the outcome of your pondering was irrelevant to what I was saying, because the question of spirituality in regards to what Dan was saying was that it's a sign of maturity to recognize your mortality and think about the possibility of what might come beyond.

There's a difference between "thinking of the hereafter," as Dan said, and believing in God, Heaven, etc.

Once again, it's not about believing in God or the afterlife. It's about recognizing the fact that you're going to die some day and naturally wondering if there's something after that. Whether you come to believe in something after or not is up to you.

Whether you believe or don't believe has nothing to do with the maturity of THINKING ABOUT YOUR MORTALITY AND WHAT'S BEYOND. Thinking about what might be beyond is, in the context of what we're talking about here, totally irrelevant to believing or not believing.

As I made quite clear in multiple posts, as you can now see, the answer you come up with has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I'm sorry, I don't follow. Are you calling us Atheists immature?

EDIT: Dammit, funnier people got there first...

That bac would call some of us immature for our beliefs seems a bit unfair. :/

Okay so if spiritual fitness isn't that big a deal, I think that you should start taking tests that tell you how to be a better atheist then.

I said I don't think the army thinks it's a big deal. Look at their replies to people who score 'low' on the spiritual fitness section. Spiritual fitness SEEMS to be a weak area for you...you MIGHT want to THINK about MKAING IT A GOAL. So much insincerity right there.

when told that you should focus on lack of spiritual belief because you're not logical enough, there's no problem with it. You're speaking about being open minded, but you're refusing to put yourself in the shoes of someone else. Think about it for a brief moment, if it was you in that situation. How would you feel? If you were told that because you're christian, you're not good enough to do whatever it is you wanted to do.

I don't think that's the case at all. YOu haven't offered any conclusive proof that that is what's going on at all. Has anyone been prevented from joining the military because they were too atheist? Has anyone been even discouraged from joining because they weren't spiritual enough?

I can't see that as being logical at all. A lot of atheists are very mature and logical (look at some of the site vets). If I were to fight a war, I would want to fight next to people like that. I have this strange feeling that the army wouldn't turn away volunteers for simply being atheist.

of if it actually effects you doing what you're wanting to do, or your ability to sign up or do those things, you're still being told you. are. not. good. enough. You. shouldn't be allowed. to.

I don't think this is really as big as we're making it.

I completely agree with this statement. I do not think your ability to serve your country with honor and distinction, going into a career field that the Majority of Americans never will, is impacted by your religious ideologies. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Athiests, Agnostics, Buddhists, ect. all serve and they serve will together.

The Military won't turn people away for religious ideologies. They would turn you away if you were bat sh*t crazy in your beliefs (fanatical in them), then they may be raising some eyebrows in your direction.

Only in theory. The Army knew that Fort Hood shooter was a total whackjob but they didn't do anything because of political correctness. In fact he was spewing his nonsense and they promoted him to Major.
