Ask Master and Apprentice

Making their way back towards the body of water that had led them into the cavern, Nova cautiously continued on behind the young Padawan, looking back over his shoulder repeatedly in anticipation of the Rathtar awakening and pursuing them. Believing fortune to be on their side as the creature had not yet arose, Nova placed his hand on the Wurfuhlla’s shoulder while taking in the pair of crystals he now held.

”Well done, boy. Well done,” he said plainly but in a hushed tone. It seemed that he had accomplished what he had set out to do but Nova feared the lesson had not yet been learned. Not truly, at least. Patience was likely something he would struggle to learn but it was common place with Padawans.

”My lightsaber?” Nova responded to the boy’s question. ”Under the guidance of Master Donishiva, I collected my crystal just as you have now done and returned to the freighter we called home as we explored the edges of known space. There, Donishiva had provided me with the necessary materials and, through the Force, I assembled them. You will see soon enough,” As he finished speaking, however, the cry of the Rathtar could be heard once more. The effect had worn off… And now it was calling to it’s brethren.

[Wurfuhlla]

Feeling happy that his master was showing pride in Wurfuhlla’s accomplishment, the Wookiee let a smile arise on his face. This had been the most memorable moment of his life. Collecting the crystals made him feel like a future Jedi for the first time. His master went on to tell him the story of his crystal and the construction of his lightsaber. It was inspiring.

Then the good times came to end when he had heard the roar of the rathtar. Soon after there was the roar of more. Wurfuhlla took a deep breath to keep himself calm. “We should hurry master, I don’t think we can take all of them. Not yet at least.” The Wookiee began pick up the pace to ward the water which was now in sight. He could smell the musty water and can feel the humidity rise. The rathtar’s roars grew closer and closer. It was sure that they would encounter them once more before reaching the water completely.

The Wookiee knew that a fight was coming and looked to his master and asked “Could you hold them off? If I can get my lightsabers constructed we’d have a better chance to survive.” Then Wurfuhlla swiftly knelt down as he pulled the materials out of his bag. Many different metals and woods. He had to use the force and drown out all around him. Once he had the materials out he began using the force to create his Jedi weapons.

[Novaron Rah]

The sound of the agitated Rathtar echoed down the cave, growing ever closer with each passing moment. Then it was partnered with a second. A third. Finally, a fourth. The pack mindset of the creatures dominated their actions and the two Jedi were their focus and it soon became clear that they would not be able to make it to the water’s edge before the beasts came down upon them…

”And what is it you plan to do, boy?” Nova growled as the Wookie set about to craft his sabers here and now. Such a task, it required focus. It required patience. It required knowledge. Perhaps he had heard before, in his earliest teachings, how to build his Jedi weapon, but simply being told how it’s done was nothing similar to building one yourself.

And that was only the smallest issue.

The two Jedi had invaded these creatures homes. They were the threat here, not the beasts. No, the Rathtar were simply defending their home. To attack, maim or even kill a creature when they had done nothing wrong? It was not the Jedi way.

”Do you forget that it is us who are encroaching upon their home, Padawan? Their territory? We can not sim-“ Before he could finish speaking, the fur of Nova’s mane stood on end, the Force warning him of an incoming threat. Stepping to his left and turning his torso to the right, he watched as one of the tentacles of the beast whipped along beside him with fatal intent. It missed the Cathar, but only just. As the tentacle began to swing left to collide with his chest the Jedi Knight leapt into the air, assisted by the Force, and flipped over the appendage. He could have easily called his saber to his hand, severed the tentacle from it’s host. Instead, Nova opted for non-violence. He needed to lead by example.

”Stay back!” Nova barked, bringing both hands up and reaching outward to grasp the Rathtar through the Force and lifting it into the air before pushing it back down the tunnel. It didn’t go far, however, but it did give them some space. The others would arrive soon…

[Wurfuhlla]

The Wookiee grew confused. He stopped his construction as his master handled the beast without killing it. “Why wouldn’t we attack in self defense? I understand this is their territory but at the same time fighting back is only reasonable.” This was a confusing time for the Wookiee. It may have just been that he was worked up from the rathtars or it might have been that his master is insistent on the nonviolent path which does put themselves in that much more danger.

“But if you insist master!” The Wookiee let out a roar at the rathtar that was powered by the force pushing it back even further. Wurfuhlla then turned around and ran straight for the water. Diving into the wall of water he began using the force to power his strokes swimming upward. Now he was just waiting on his master.
