Xiann nodded along as Clove described her own example of the danger of inexperience, quite an apt one at that. She doubted that anyone would ever be able to count the number of casualties caused by dropped grenades and ill-aimed artillery. Then her companion fell silent and, seemingly, into a deep thought while staring at her. It obviously wasn’t the first time she had seen someone stare at her, especially when she was in a similar pose, but this felt different. It didn’t feel like The Selphi was ogling or undressing her in her head. Perhaps Clove’s innocence was far greater than Xiann had previously thought.

The Twi’lek leaned back to sit upright as the other returned to reality and answered the question. Xiann’s smile quickly disappeared and her entire body visibly recoiled slightly at the mention of beating the Sith. She sat in place for a few moments as Clove continued. “Don’t…” She practically snapped but paused to compose herself for a few seconds. “Never underestimate your enemies. It will only lead to ruin.” Xi took a deep breath to calm herself properly, “Try not to overestimate them either. That will lead to missed opportunities. But if you must do one, it’s better to overestimate their power. It’s better to miss an opportunity than to give one to them.”

Xiann took a large spoonful of ice cream and let it melt in her mouth before letting out a sigh and looking Clove dead in the eye, her face looking more serious than when she was checking for an injury, “When you are fighting for survival, you’re goal isn’t to win the fight. It’s to not lose. Don’t hang around longer than you have to. If you see an opening that will let you flee, take it. You don’t have to beat your opponent, just escape them. If you can beat them, great, but don’t risk your life on it.”

Another sigh escaped the Twi’lek as she leaned back against one of the cabinets, “Like I said at the start, I will teach you how to survive. Hopefully what I teach you can help you win too, but winning is pointless if you overreach and die too. The Jedi will probably say something like, ‘It is our duty to protect the innocent.’ or something equally as self-righteous. But you can’t save anybody if you are killed by the first Si-” She stopped halfway through the word, clearly still severely afflicted by her previous encounter, “By the first challenge you come across. Better to escape and live today so you can fight tomorrow.”

She looked back up at Clove and gave her a weak smile, “Sorry, bit of a rant there, but it was important. So if you forget everything else I ever teach you, remember that.”

The Twi'lek's usually happy demeanor shifting to a deadly serious one startled Clove, especially the snap that started it all.

The half-Sephi sat in stunned silence, listening intently to every word Xi said, words tinged with emotions and pain from a previous experience. It was almost as if she was pleading with her to pay attention and take her seriously. And it worked because those words gave her shivers and burned themselves into her mind.

Then Xi apologized for her 'rant,' and there was a brief silence. Clove wasn't sure how to respond; in fact, she wasn't sure how to move for a moment. Her arms were stiff, her fingers locked around the spoon and tube of ice cream. But then she regained movement in her hands, followed by her lips and jaw.

"No, don't be sorry. You are right about everything. I shouldn't have said that, I'm sorry." She paused and finally broke eye contact to look down at her ice cream. Deep down she also wanted to apologize for clearly upsetting her by bringing up the Sith in the first place, but that didn't seem like a good idea, not now at least. Because it was not the point of what she was trying to teach her.

"I understand that getting killed by the first thing you see is useless. Even if it is our duty to protect the innocent. If I were to die by the first ... challenge I come across, then obviously I've failed to protect the innocent altogether. Because while our death will unite us with the Force, we can't exactly protect civilians while being dead. Need to be alive for that."

She lifted her eyes with a faint and apologetic smile while digging with her spoon in the ice cream for a second or two. "Crix taught me a lesson about that. He called it RTFA. 'Run the fuck away'. It specifically focuses on the very difficult challenges, but it follows the same principle. Is there a danger you can't face? Run away, don't try to die a hero."

"Are you okay?"

Xiann’s smile became more genuine and less forced as Clove spoke, showing she really did understand the meaning behind her little explosion of a rant. “No need to apologize, it’s not like you did it on purpose. And Crix is right, don’t try to be a hero.” She looked at her ice cream as she thought for a moment, “Personally, I don’t believe in heroes. When it comes to greatness there are two kinds of people, the decisive and the stupid. The stupid sacrifice themselves to save a few. The decisive choose to sacrifice a few to save many.” She shrugged slightly, “How many people could they have saved if they hadn’t thrown their own life away? Life is valuable and worth protecting, sure, but some lives have more to offer than others. It’s not a popular opinion, but still…”

Clove’s last question threw Xiann off guard however, despite how simple it was. She was definitely not okay, but she couldn’t exactly just dump her emotions onto poor Clove. “I am… Alive. And as long as I’m alive I can heal, improve and move forward. In theory anyway.” She let out a small chuckle, before finishing off her ice cream. “Well, I think that’s enough theory for now, how about we get back to blasting?” Her normal smile returned as she looked back up to Clove, “How’s you’re shoulder feeling? Think you can take another stab at the rifle or do you want to try your blaster again?”

The Twi’lek got up and moved over to one of the counters and dropped the tub in a bin before returning to the front of the shed and tapping her PDA to rearrange the target droids to a mid range formation. Regardless of which weapon she chose this seemed to be about the right distance for Clove right now, they could always move them further away or make them move around later. She turned and smiled at her student, “Ready to go again?”

It was a touchy subject that many people debated. Is it worth sacrificing a few to save a large number of people? What differentiates one life from the other? She didn't know the answers to these questions. But she didn't have to because it didn't matter whether she agreed or disagreed. In the end, she'd be more useful alive than dead, and that was good enough for now.

But she couldn't hold it against Xi for having a very clear and somewhat unpopular opinion. If anything it was charming she was so opinionated.

Plus the hero bit had some truth in it. "I agree. I mean, I do believe in heroes, but I don't think that heroes are the ones who throw their lives away just like that. It's more complex than that. Some of the biggest heroes aren't, on paper, the best people."

As she explained she was alive, the half-Sephi stared at the Twi'lek. It's not as if she said something wrong; she's still alive, which means she can be healed. She firmly believed in this statement. But it wasn't a statement she decided to accept. Her only response was a quiet "Mhmmm," and she ate her ice cream as quickly as the Twi'lek. "That's fine by me, but let's return to the blaster for the time being! I don't want to bruise my eye any further!"

Clove placed a hand on Xi's shoulder as they got up on her feet, stopping her from walking off to the counter. She swung her arms around the Twi'leks' back without saying anything. She knew a hug wouldn't instantly make Xi feel better, but that was fine. One hug at a time, she'd try to help.

Then she let go, and followed the Twi'lek down the counter to drop her own tub in the bin. She waited patiently for the droids to rearrange themselves and shift to a mid-range formation. "I'm more than ready!"

She drew her blaster from her thigh holster, checked the energy pack to make sure it was full and clicked in properly, and took a stance in front of the sphere droids with an excited and bright grin. The half-Sephi gave the pretty Twi'lek teacher one last smile, before firing a new round of shots at the droids.
