[Aren Krass]

Aren Krass was dressed in his well fitting blue suit, with slender vertical grey stripes running up the length of it. He was seated in his office, waiting for Senator Owen Hasse to enter. He had hailed the senator, and asked him to come meet on hopes that Owen would see eye to eye with him on some issues. Aren took a sip of caf, and leaned back, waiting for the senator to enter.

Senate business is often incredibly dull. Its rare one finds the time for a flare of excitement between day to day responsibilities and today might just be one of those days.
When my secretary told me Senator Krass requested a meeting the initial feelings where of annoyance. Why cant he follow protocol and make an appointment like everyone else? Of course I agreed to meet the senator, I cant be put in with the crowds this early in my career now can I? Besides, worst comes to worse I get to look him in the eye and tell him to fark himself.

I walked in quickly as I always do, smiled at the senator sitting in his desk of the well lit office. I say "Senator, how might I be of service for you today?" before sitting down in the chair opposite not bothering to wait for an invitation to do so. We both know I'm not here for pleasantries.

Aren smiled "Senator Hesse! A pleasure to see you again! Have a seat!" The last bit came out as the man was already sitting down. Aren mentally snorted at the man's skipping pleasantries.

"I was calling you here to speak with you, and gauge your interest, in a certain proposal I have in mind. Tell me Senator, how do you feel about the current state of affairs as far as security goes for the Republic?"

Aren was hoping that he would agree with his opinions about the need for security in the galaxy, and express a willingness to scheme with them. If he did, then they could work together very well in the future.

 

[Rector_Ras]

"Security is obviously a very important part of our jobs as senators, but I cant say I know exactly what you are referring to. Are we speaking of crime, of scandals or the security of republic space itself?"

No one just pages a senator for a routine security question. You can get that out of my voting record or an inquiry to my office. Krass is a shark and he thinks I'm a little fish waiting to be snatched up for something. The problem is he is mistaken, I am a fisherman and that fish he's chasing is my bait. He can swim around it all he wants but until he bites I wont make a move. Of course then I have to chose whether I reel in and have a nice lunch or if I jump into the water for a nice swim. Neither are very appealing right now, coming here might have been a mistake.

"Senator Hesse I am talking about the very security of the Republic herself, not just from the Sith threat, but from threats within as well. You're a very skilled senator, Owen, and I think we could work nicely together. I've seen your voting record, I know you love the Republic as much as I do. "

Depending on how Owen continued, Aren would propose to him that he join the Axis, a group of likeminded senators, moving to shape the republic and pass legislation. He was a schemer, and Krass knew that. The man was testing the waters before he stuck his neck out.

I pause before answering. Krass doesn't want to leak, its a real secrete. The only real action now is the truth, nothing lost if the truth isn't what he wants to hear but possibly much gained if it is.

"The sith could be a threat to Arkania. We don't sit in the core with many of the prominent senators, we do need to keep them in check. Internally we need to keep stability. We cant afford to divide right now. Crime can be hardened out, although I do hope we don't actually enlist bounty hunters to be the police as has been going around the senate. What is it you want my skill for? We both know I'm not going to agree to anything in the dark Krass."

This is where the shark either bites, or swims away. I do hope the bite is a good one, he's peeked my interest.

 

[Prudence]

I pause before answering. Krass doesn't want to leak, its a real secrete. The only real action now is the truth, nothing lost if the truth isn't what he wants to hear but possibly much gained if it is.

Krass steepled his fingers and listened as the man spoke. He was encouraged by the speech on the Sith, but a little disappointed by his opinion on the Bounty Hunters Guild. Regardless, he would still be of use to them.

"I represent a collection of likeminded senators, Senator Hesse. We feel very strongly about our beliefs, and the need for security and strength in the Republic. Your skill in the art of political scheming has caught my eye. I'd like to offer you a seat among us. Should you accept, it would have the potential to see a significant rise in your importance, and position, in the senate, as well as backing of bills that you hold dear to yourself."

He was keeping his proposal vague, and innocent. If Owen walked away, no harm would be done. If he accepted, much good could be done.

 

[Rector_Ras]

"You want me to scheme for you?" The thing you need to remember about us senators is that officially we do not scheme. Officially we represent our respected planets and abide by the rules at all times, you don't mention scheming unless that is precisely what your doing at the moment.

I let the breath seep out of my lungs before leaning forward. I am near a whisper now, a harsh one. I don't know if he is recording or who might be watching. "I agree to nothing without the full details Krass. You could lead a group publically but you aren't which means you are hiding. which means it is likely not legal and if I am sticking my neck out for anything, even the security of the republic then I will know everything or I will not participate do you understand senator." I sit back up in my chair take a deep breath letting my words linger in the air.

"Now are you going to explain or am I leaving?"

Aren pursed his lips. He was bothered that Owen wouldn't put himself at risk, but simultaneously he understood the caution the man took, as he himself would have as well. He spoke softly into his desk comm,

"Chelsea, please come here, with the wand."

When the PA arrived, he motioned to Owen and said "Make sure he isn't wearing a wire."

The attractive young blonde waved a wand across the man, scanning for any recording devices. Assuming none would be found she would smile and give a polite nod to Krass, saying "He's all clear."

Krass leaned forward once more as the assistant removed herself,

"We do what has to be done Owen. We make sure legislation meets its vote count. We make sure situations are taken advantage of.."

He paused for a moment,

"Yes I'm asking you to scheme. This Republic is facing a threat like it has never known before. The options are clear, fight, or die."

"So you lead a group who goes behind procedure to get what you want no matter what?"

This is the kind of stuff you don't want public. No wonder Krass was secretive, I could make it rain hard with this information. Of course I won't do that. No this is the good stuff, you get favors out of it. Blackmail, the most lovely present.

Before Owen could reach the door Krass stood and spoke,

"You have no proof of this. Anything you say is the word of a rookie senator against that of a seasoned veteran senator with scores of experience. I will bury you if you even try to blackmail me. Look for proof, you won't find it. I'm offering you a grasp at true power, Owen. I suggest you take advantage of the offer that has been made to you. And for your health, I wouldn't recommend threatening me again."
