Larkin DeLacroix

Even the feircest wildfires begin with the tiniest spark.

Larkin DeLacroix was a female Human in the Sith Empire, and heir to the defunct DeLacroix shipping company. In the years following the civil war between Imperial Republica and the Old Empire, she worked tirelessly to preserve and rebuild the last vestiges of prestige her family once enjoyed.

Biography
______________________________________________________

Born on Empress Teta into a wealthy family steeped in prestige and tradition, Larkin enjoyed a pampered upbringing at the pinnacles of society. As is so often the case with privilege, however, reality seldom matches perception.

The daughter of a retired Imperial Director and a prominent Serennian aristocrat, Larkin was raised in a strict household where she was treated more like a protégé than a daughter. Nevertheless, as a child her parents doted on her, at first simply because they had the means. But as Larkin grew and matured, each saw within her an heir, and so began a vicious cycle of exploitation as each sought to shape her into a scion of their design.

Ultimately, their obsession proved a boon for Larkin's burgeoning young mind. In their tireless efforts to mold their daughter, her parents spared no expense on education, enrolling her in some of the most prestigious universities the Empire had to offer. Larkin spent her formative and adolescent years learning under the finest tutors money could buy, studying wide ranging subjects from classic literature and history, to intergalactic politics and Imperial trade law.

Yet there was one lesson that Larkin gleaned not from any professor or classroom, but from her own parents. Their bitter competition for her future exposed her to the subtle art of manipulation; a skill which she would adopt and hone herself, and upon which she would predicate much of her adult life.

Eventually coming to resent the example set by her parents, Larkin blossomed from a petulant teenager into a shrewd young woman - with her sights firmly set on overtaking the family fortune. Using the very education her parents had exhausted so much of their own time, energy and wealth on providing her, Larkin deftly played to their egos, earning both their respect and trust even as she feigned obedience through well practiced smiles and disingenuous enthusiasm. Her ploys bore fruit, earning her a controlling share in her father's company, and access to a substantial stipend in his will. The move infuriated her mother, who immediately began scheming to rob Larkin of her inheritance.

Unfortunately, neither would fully realize their dream as the outbreak of civil war between the Old Empire and Imperial Republica spelled disaster. With the loss of critical shipping lanes and facilities within the Old Empire, the business hemorrhaged funds, and the DeLacroix name lost all value almost overnight. Larkin was powerless as she watched her father's life work disintegrate in the fires of war - her fortune, indeed her future, bled dry at the hands of zealots.

As devastating as the war proved to Larkin's long-term goals, an unfortunate twist of fate would spare her the indignity of poverty. In what she later referred to as 'a stroke of serendipity', her father committed suicide, unable to bear the immense financial burdens - and deep personal humiliation - of his floundering business any longer. Upon learning of the news, Larkin's reaction was decidedly lukewarm, and servants for the family reported that she was heard to quip: "What a pity he didn't live long enough to leave me trillions."

Nevertheless, Larkin did lay claim to her inheritance, despite staunch opposition from her mother; from whom she grew increasingly distant in the months thereafter. And yet, despite having staved off disaster, Larkin realized she had only done so by mere chance. Indeed, even as she reveled in her newfound fortune, her position as heir to her father's estate was far from secure. The board of directors, still firmly in control of the company's day-to-day operations, began entertaining the notion of ousting Larkin and selling off the company's remaining assets.

Larkin understandably found such dissent appalling. She had come too far, and flirted with disaster once too often, to allow a room full of stodgy old geezers to stand in her way. Casting off the life of a spoiled socialite, Larkin embraced her new role as an aspiring entrepreneur. She would prove herself worthy beyond question, and would not shy from making examples out of those foolish enough to oppose her. It would be through her own sheer force of will that the DeLacroix name would once again be uplifted to its former glory. And if she couldn't succeed, then she would see it all reduced to ash. For even death would be preferable when compared to the shame of failure and exile.

Personality and Traits
___________________________________________________________________________

Blasters change governments far surer than ballots.

With her impeccably manicured appearance, conceited demeanor and haughty Imperial accent, Larkin is every bit the cultured, discerning socialite she was raised to be. Brought up on the belief that self worth is equal only to personal achievement, she is an uncompromising perfectionist possessed of seemingly limitless ambition and unswerving conviction, characterized by shrewd pragmatism. A life of privilege has shaped her into a callous woman who observes strict adherence to the Empire's social strata, and for whom the plight of its "commoners" is beneath her interest.

Despite presenting herself as emotionally reticent, a trait born from a less than functional relationship with her family, Larkin can be perfectly affable towards those she trusts, though not necessarily affectionate. Like most well off socialites, she enjoys being the better half of any relationship and is not shy about flaunting her own wealth and privilege to prove it. Nevertheless, those with thicker skin willing to brave her supercilious mannerisms or accommodate her discriminating tastes will find Larkin to be a stable, if not somewhat eccentric, acquaintance.

Skills and Abilities

Politics — Before becoming heir to the remnants of her father's shipping company, Larkin studied Imperial law and politics at the prestigious Hanna University on Chandrila. Attending at her mother's behest, the curriculum bored her terribly, and she proved herself an average student at best. It was only after her father's death, and her subsequent inheritance of his business, that she found a use for her studies. Though Larkin is far and away from being a legal scholar, what she learned has proven invaluable in helping her to navigate the often times dubious realm of Imperial politics as she seeks to rebuild her family's legacy.

Polyglot — Viewed by many as more of a novelty than a skill due to the Empire's strong humanocentric culture, Larkin was taught by her father that language was crucial to any negotiation. Her education on alien dialects was largely informal at first, consisting only of those few conversations she overheard between her father and the spacers who frequented his company. Later, while studying at university, she took up a more regimented study of foreign languages, eventually graduating top of her class. Among the alien tongues in which she is either fluent or has a firm comprehension of are Huttese, Rodese, Ryl and Durese.

Negotiation — Taught almost exclusively by her father, Larkin is a shrewd negotiator whose years belie her talents. A keen observer of human behavior, she possesses an uncanny knack for identifying and exploiting weakness, quietly reveling in the thrill of brow-beating her competition into acquiescence. Though she lacks much in the way of practical experience, she possesses no less confidence in her abilities.

Just wanna confirm, what's the current state of the company and is she now in charge of it? Just need to make sure it all fits in with how we want level 1s to start out. Everything else is good to go, so I can approve the character once you clear that up.

The company is essentially a shell of its former self, with an office and a couple shipping ports on Empress Teta. But Larkin is currently not in control, no. She is the rightful heir, but the board of directors are still overseeing day-to-day operations, and the majority of Larkin's initial goal will be wresting control away from them before they can liquidate the company out from under her.

A full write-up for the company will be pending once I reach a point where I can claim Larkin to be the acting CEO ICly.

Sorry for the late response, holidays and all.

So a couple of shipping ports seems like a lot for such close association to a level 1 character, as heir it would be a lot easier for her to gain access to a company that big than any other character would. Level 1s start off with a small business like a tiny cantina or a ship to their name. She's a very short step away from two whole ports, so you can see my concern. Please tone that down.

No worries.

Would cutting it down to just an office suffice? No ports or other assets.

Consider it done.

I never did mention the actual size of the company in her bio, just that it had fallen on hard times after the civil war and never recovered. Would you like me to actually specify this, or would my agreement to paring things down be sufficient?

Hmm, could just throw in a line about it in the profile. On the basis of that, Approved!
