NAME: Kyber Ortaigen (Alias: Shadow)
AGE: 19
SPECIES: Human

FACTION: Jedi
RANK: Initiate

HEIGHT: 5'10"
HAIR COLOR: Auburn
EYE COLOR: Green
FORCE: Yes, lightly trained

STRENGTH:

Growing up on Kashyyyk, Kyber was mostly around wookies for the duration of his life. There was no way he'd ever be as strong as a wookie, but he pushed himself to be in league with his friends. Though always the weakest among them, we was pretty strong for the average human his age.

DEXTERITY:

As a boy who grew up in the forest, Kyber loved to run through the trees and climb to his hearts content. He enjoyed jumping from one tree branch to another in his youth. Though by no means a professional acrobat, Kyber is fast and able to escape from most situations with relative ease. As he grew older, this would help him scale rooftops and buildings on more urban worlds.

CONSTITUTION:

Kyber is a very healthy individual. Living on Kashyyyk with the guidance of his parents and friends, he only ever ate fresh fruits and the animals that they hunted. He also was in good physical shape. He's hardy, and persistent, which makes him a good hunter. However, his upbringing on Kashyyyk means that his immune system isn't particularly adapted to the diseases found in more metropolitan areas of the galaxy.

INTELLIGENCE:

Homeschooled by his parents on Kashyyyk, Kyber isn't stupid. He's certainly no groundbreaking genius, but he is adaptable, and able to think on his feet. Always creative, Kyber is a free thinker who likes to "think outside the box". He is also a fast learner, becoming fluent in Shyriiwook by the age of eight. In his later life, Kyber would take it upon himself to learn more about the Force.

WISDOM:

A bit reckless, Kyber doesn't always listen when the situation calls for it. While his hunting training has taught him to examine his targets closely, sometimes he will simply charge in during an emotionally charged moment. He mistakes arrogance for initiative and usually tries to solve problems himself. He enjoys being the "Jedi Knight in glistening robes" as it were. Even in his cynicism later on, this heroic quality never really abandoned him. If Kyber sees a band of slavers, he is quick to stage a rescue, even if this isn't a wise thing to do. He's young and has a lot to learn.

CHARISMA:

Witty to a tee, Kyber developed a way with words throughout his life. He recognizes the value of words and their power. He developed a dry sense of humour, used mainly as a defence mechanism to mask his pains. His persuasive nature can usually win people, but he isn't infallible. He isn’t that used to other humans and aliens, having grown up around purely wookies who mostly value displays of strength and honesty, but he doesn’t let that inhibit him in any way.

  • Kyber was born on Kashyyyk to a former Jedi Knight named Arkon Ortaigen and a former mercenary named Emily Coppbas.

The two met while Arkon was on patrol on Naboo. Emily was in the middle of a contract to assassinate a minor noble. The Jedi managed to stop the killing and took her into custody. The two fell in love months later. Though the relationship was complicated. While the Jedi allowed their members to love, they were not impressed with Emily's mercenary history. In addition, Emily's band of mercs made things complicated as well. She was a member of a group called The Krayt's Claw. They had a strict rule about leaving the band, and stricter rules about fraternizing with Jedi, as the leader of the band did not trust Force Users of any kind. So, the star-crossed lovers turned their backs on everything they had once known. When they discovered that Emily was pregnant, the two ran away from their former lives to be together.

The two flew to Kashyyyk. Arkon had a good relationship with a local village leader named Chewdar after he had liberated his clan from a group of slavers years back. The two settled into the forests of Kashyyyk, content for a life of peace together. Months later they had a child. Arkon named him Kyber, after the Lightsaber Crystal, hoping the name would give him strength throughout his life.

An alien on a world full of Wookies, Kyber lived as normal a life as possible. From a young age he was sociable and made friends throughout the village. While his parents were worried that he would feel out of place, Kyber was always happy. Eager to fit into the community, Kyber would try to emulate the behaviours of his friends. He took to strength training, hoping he could keep up with his peers. This never worked, but Kyber never lacked in persistence. He learned to understand Shyriiwook from a very young age and by the age of nine he was able to speak it too. Though it would aggravate his throat and hurt sometimes to speak the language. It was helpful, as many of the young wookies did not understand Basic. His parents would teach him that.

For years, Kyber lived a relatively normal life. He was schooled by his parents and played with his friends in his free time. The best of them being a wookie born on the same day as Kyber, who he affectionately called "Tuft", as his fur always seemed to be out of place. Kyber was known as "Skins" due to his lack of almost any body hair. The two were like brothers. Tuft was the one who facilitated Kyber's education in Shyriiwook. The two would often hunt together. They were always successful, being some of the best hunters-in-training in the village.

His Mother and Father did their best to hide their respective pasts from them. His father hid his lightsaber and rarely used the force. At least not around Kyber. His mother did her best to put her old routines behind her, and to not bring up her past either. Kyber was happy with his life and was mostly preoccupied, which made this easier. He was a headstrong kid, not necessarily interested in his parents past. All he knew was that he loved and trusted them. Though his father felt a connection to the force begin to form in his son moments after he was born.

One day, when Kyber was about 10, while on a routine patrol through the forest, Kyber and Tuft ran into something quite odd. The two had ventured very far from the village. Further then advised by Kyber's father anyways. On their hunt, they noticed something peculiar; a masked man skulking through the forest. Kyber was immediately curious. He knew there were other humans in the galaxy, he'd just never encountered another before. Tuft was immediately hostile. He didn't know what to make of it. "Wait here" Tuft uttered quietly to Kyber. Tuft, armed with his Bowcaster, began charging towards him. The man immediately caught sight of Tuft, pulled a blaster and began shooting. After a short exchange of blaster fire, Tuft was backed up against a tree, a blaster held to his head.

"Put down the blaster and settle this like a man" Tuft yelled at him.
"I barely have any clue what you're saying, okay furball!?" the man retorted. "I'm looking for a girl that's rumoured to live around here. Deserter from our group". Kyber immediately was shocked. Why was this thug here? Who was he looking for? Where was he from?
"I got a feeling you know where this girl is..." He took a shot, firing into Tuft's shoulder. Kyber didn't hesitate for a second. He broke cover, running for the mercenary.

"Let him go!" Kyber cried, throwing his arms out in front of him in a surge of anger and fear as he ran. Without any warning. The man was blasted off his feet and sent quite a few feet away. Tuft looked at Kyber with disbelief. Kyber simply stood there, shocked.
"How did you... what did you do?!" Tuft yelled at Kyber.
"I don't know! It just... Woosh!"
"Well we have to g-AHH" Tuft cried out as he tried to move. Without hesitation, Kyber grabbed him by his good shoulder. And the two ran. As far away from the other man as possible.

Kyber rushed back to the village, his hands trembling from the rush of adrenaline in his veins and the uncertainty of the power which he had just used, both excited and afraid of what he was capable of. The adrenaline gave him the strength to save Tuft, hauling him back to the village as quickly as possible. After bringing Tuft to the healers, Kyber ran to his father.

Bursting into the small hut he found his father in the midst of meditating, as he so often would. He told his father everything that had happened. Arkon paused for quite some time, apprehensive yet proud that his son carried his gift. Arkon wished to wait until Kyber was older, but he supposed that the time had come. He told Kyber of The Force and his own history as a member of the Jedi Army, along with the reasons that he and Emily had come to Kashyyyk in the first place. He did not tell Kyber of the Sith or the Dark Side, not wishing to burden the boy with any worries. Instead, he told Kyber that the Force was not to be misused, and that it took patience and focus to harness its power. It was something to be respected, not abused. With that, Arkon knew it was time to train his son in the ways of the Force. He had to.

From that day on, although his father wanted to begin later on, Kyber began his training in the force. His father taught him mostly in line with the Jedi principles; that the force was an ally to be trusted but not leaned upon. His parents wanted to emphasize that the force was not a crutch. As such, his mother had a hand in his training as well. As a member of the Krayt's Claw, a mercenary band that hated Force Sensitives, she was adept at taking out Force Users. She had taught him how to shoot a rifle to help with the hunting, but this training became more intense now that she knew she was being hunted. She taught him how to be stealthy, how to use the branches and the trees as cover and a means of transportation. She taught him basic hand-to-hand combat as a means of defence. She needed her son to be prepared for the worst.

Arkon never went into great detail about his life with the Jedi or the main habits of the Jedi. However, he did try to install in Kyber the values of the Jedi. Levelheadedness, Thoughtfulness, Calm and Peace. Kyber was fascinated with the ways of the lightsaber, but was told that he would only be able to learn when he was ready. That day would never come…

When Kyber was 12, the Krayt’s Claw managed to track his mother back to their village. They came armed and prepared. They were there for two reasons: They came to capture the deserter, and claim the wookies in the village as slaves. Kyber wanted to fight, but he was not allowed by his father. He was not ready, he said. The village began to burn, wookies screamed out and trees crashed to the forest floor. Amidst the chaos was a dark, gravely voice calling for Kyber’s mother, Emily, to face them in combat. Kyber was sent away by his parents, telling him to find Tuft and run into the forest and run as quickly as possible. All he took was a single Bowcaster, struggling to carry it with him. Quickly he found Tuft and ran into the forests. Little did they know they were being followed by one of the Mercenaries.

They did not get far before the Mercenary shot out Tuft’s knee, hoping to incapacitate him. Kyber screamed, fearing for the worst for his best friend. In a moment of rage, Kyber found a new strength to lift the Bowcaster. He turned around, and with barely any acknowledgement for the Mercenary, Kyber shot him. The bolt sailed perfectly towards the mercenary’s head, the bowcaster blasting Kyber back, the recoil of the powerful weapon throwing him to the forest floor. This was Kyber’s first kill of a sentient life form. He felt no regret, only anger. However, it was too late for Tuft. The Mercenary had managed to take out a vital artery, and Tuft bled out soon after. Tuft died in Kyber’s arms, the later vowing to avenge his friend by destroying the mercenary group.

After saying goodbye to his friend with tears streaming down his face, Kyber ran back towards the village. Much of the village was destroyed, with only a few wookies remaining. Chewdar, a few other elders and some of the children. His mother was no where to be found. Chewdar explained to the boy that his mother was captured and his father died trying to protect her. Many of their fellow wookies were captured, presumably to sell into slavery or worse.

Kyber was absolutely distraught. The young boy lost his Mother, his father and his best friend all in the same day. This was an incredibly traumatic event for the boy, and to this day he is able to recall each and every detail from that day. Including the grizzly tone of the mercenary leader. Who he vowed to find some day.

Kyber remained with the Wookies for a few more years after that. However, the events of that day had scarred him. He became more cynical, spending more time alone and retreating inwards. Amongst his father’s belongings, Kyber had found his father’s lightsaber, which he tried to teach himself how to use. He also spent much more time teaching himself how to use his abilities with the Force, wanting to finish what his father had started. Life amongst the Wookies was difficult from that point on, and even though Chewdar absolved Kyber of any fault, he was viewed with distrust by the others. He was the Alien that brought death to their village. When Kyber was older, around the age of 16, he left Kashyyyk in his father’s old ship, which brought the family to the planet so many years ago. He left without saying goodbye to anyone, feeling that he was unwanted by the clan.

And so, Kyber set off into the galaxy to make his own way and forge his own path. All he took from Kashyyyk was his father’s lightsaber and Jedi robes, a blaster pistol that had once belonged to his Mother, and the bowcaster that Tuft had held dear when the two were children. Kyber did not know what awaited him. All he knew was that there was a small chance that his mother was still alive and out there. He would find the Krayt’s Claw and he would destroy them.

In the years to come, Kyber would take up work as a smuggler as a means to support himself. He became a drifter, largely living in his ship and never staying on any one planet for too long. He learned what he could about the galaxy from his access to the Holonet, trying to find out as much about the Force as possible. He also acted as a sort of vigilante on the worlds he travelled to, endeavouring to save slaves and destroy bandits whenever possible.

And so, this is the tale of Kyber Ortaigen. The rest is up to fate…
  • SKILLS:
    • Marksmanship: Trained as a hunter, Kyber is quite proficient with most firearms in the galaxy. As he grew older and became stronger, he started to use bowcasters more and more, enjoying their firepower. His mother had a hand in his training, showing him everything she learned from her time as a Mercenary.

    • The Force: He was introduced and lightly trained in the force by his father, a former Jedi knight. He has a barebones knowledge of the force and his abilities at the moment do not really stem beyond simple telekinesis.

    • Linguistics: Kyber has an ear for language, enjoying the ways different tongues work. He is fluent in Shyriiwook and Basic but is always interested to learn more. His current goal is to understand the binary of droids.

    • Piloting: When Kyber left Kashyyyk he could barely pilot at all. The most experience he had was listening to his father talk about his flying days. He managed to figure out the controls enough that he could leave Kashyyyk and in the years to come, he has become an accomplished pilot in his own right. A necessary skill, considering smuggling was how he made himself a living.
    GEAR:
    • A Bowcaster that belonged to his dead best friend.

    • A Blaster Pistol that belonged to his Mother.

    • His Father’s Lightsaber. Kyber really doesn’t know how to use it, though he keeps it on him at all
times. As a means of intimidating others, and also to remind him of his beloved father. It has a Green Blade and is modified to separate at the emitter into two separate pieces.

    • His Father's Freighter, the ship that initially brought Kyber to Kashyyyk as an infant. While not incredibly fast compared to other ships and with minimal firepower, it suits Kyber's needs. He lives in this ship in addition to traveling in it for his Smuggling contracts.

  • As a child, Kyber was happy and carefree. He liked to make people laugh and he loved to learn and discover new things. As he grew older, he grew more cynical, but still held on to much of his childhood traits. He still enjoys making people laugh, though he would never admit it. He enjoys making dry remarks and loves wordplay. His desire to learn never really went away either, devoting his time to studying and practicing with the Force after his father was murdered.

Kyber can be a steadfast ally, but his experiences being shunned by his clan after the death of his parents has made it difficult for him to trust people completely. He has witnessed the worst of the galaxy and as a result never really takes anything at face value. He assumes that people usually have ulterior motives and Kyber is always interested to find out what those might be.

Kyber also has a personal issue with dishonourable mercenary groups, similar to those of the Krayt’s Claw that destroyed his life. He also hates Slavery, due to that being a driving reason behind the group’s invasion of his homeworld. Anyone who would raid and destroy an innocent village and kidnap innocent people are the scum of the galaxy, in Kyber’s eyes.
