"After the squid-head 'ad us all hostage in the hold, he just stood there, lookin' at us with those black eyes and wearin' that fethin' sly grin of his. I asked him, 'Why us? Why do you do this?' The Captain walked up to me, and looked me dead in the eye. 'Why?' he said to me, 'There comes a time in every man's life when they want to raise a black flag. I was simply one of the ones brave enough to grab the line.' Then he turned away from us and spoke with one of the damned droids loading the cargo onto his ship. 'What's your name?' I asked, my heart thumpin'. He turned to look at me and bowed. 'Kas Orayva, Pirate Captain.' An' that's when they knocked us out..." -a cargo hauler on Tatooine

Kas Orayva
Pirate Captain

Nautolan_Pirate_by_RavingDork.jpg

Faction: Corsairs Silentium

Rank: Captain

Species: Nautolan

Age: 25

Gender: Male

Height: 1.8 meters (5'9")

Weight: 70 Kilograms (154.3 pounds)

Eyes: Solid black

Hair: Tentacles. Kas wears a thin, decorative black leather band around each of his head tentacles, but leaves them to hang loose.

Skin: Light Blue

Distinguishing Marks: A roguish smile and good sense of humor. On the left side of Kas' abdomen, near his hip, is a ragged scar from a vibro-blade, approximately 6 inches long.

Personality: Captain Orayva's most defining personality quirk is his air of grandeur; he speaks eloquently, and has good natured arguments and haggles to get the best deal. He is extremely respectful, almost gentlemanly and prefers to win his battles through words and without cruelty, though he is not above torture and definitely not killing. One of his other defining traits is his own sense of an honor code; he respects his own sense of morality above all else. He is driven by greed, and is always looking out for himself and his crew, but in his mind his word is his bond. There is nothing more to a man than the trustworthiness of his word. That said, when angered, Kas can be incredibly conniving and manipulative, and goes to great lengths to get even.

Biography: Kas was born in 998 A.B.Y. to two nondescript Nautolan parents, on the species’ homeworld of Glee Amselm, and it is widely believed Orayva is not his birth name. For the first seven years of his life, things were grand for him on the peaceful ocean world, he and his family living in the water where he could play with the other children and explore the various underwater caves at his own accord. He was an incredibly curious child, and his father entertained him at home by telling him stories of pirate captains and roguish smugglers. Each story let Kas slip away, and he often pretended he was one of these dashing buccaneers when he was playing.

Then, Kas’ life took a turn for the worse. His father had been given a job opportunity on Nar Shaddaa, that turned out to be a run-around. Stranded and penniless, Kas’ parents turned to indentured servitude for the Hutt gangsters that run the planet. Kas was often left home alone for days, and he learned to fend for himself, at first by begging, and then turning to pick pocketing. The city became his playground, and just as he had been the adventurous pirate deep in the seas of Glee Anselm exploring caves, now he was the dashing captain atop spires and running the streets and alleys of the Smuggler’s Moon. He was still inquisitive, and soon he had found a vent that led to a local cantina. Here, he would sit and listen to the various spacers, bounty hunters, and smugglers share stories in spice and alcohol induced cheer. The stories only added to his creative games.

Then, when he was ten years old, Kas was waiting for his parents to arrive from work after a day of ducking out of sight after swiping creds from unsuspecting passerby. There was a knock at the door, and with a cheeky grin, the young Kas opened the door, only to be grabbed by a Devaronian Hutt gangster. Kas kicked, and screamed, and bit, trying to fight off the man, but it was in vain. When they passed a group of what appeared to be soldiers, Kas yelled for help, but they simply turned away. Finally, hoarse, he gave up and awaited his fate, crying silently but in his mind he was trying to be brave, like the stories from his games.

When they arrived at the Hutt palace, Kas was thrown down in front of his parents, and a large Hutt named Uva presiding with her bulbous form. His parents were crying, and in a language Kas didn’t understand, explained that for their insolence, his parents would pay. As it turned out, they had been stealing for the past three years in tiny amounts, saving so they could buy their freedom. In front of them, Uva sold Kas to slavers, but before he could be led out the door, his father rushed after him, punching a guard in the face. Kas didn’t scream, but only looked in shock as another guard raised a scattergun and blew his father off his feet in a spray of blood. Kas rounded the corner, chased by his mother’s scream followed by the echo of silence left in the wake of a second shot.

For the next four years, Kas toiled in mines on some backwater planet, barely able to stay alive. In his mind, he would escape into his stories, and in his dreams he was far from the wretchedness of the dark tunnels and instead at the helm of a ship in space. He spoke with other slaves at night often, learning things from them as he got older; dance from a Twi’lek who had been sold by her former master, speech, etiquette, and basic education by a human political prisoner who had been in the mines for years teaching those who wished to learn, and lockpicking, security, and some basic combat skills from his favorite fellow slave, a smooth-talking Corellian smuggler named Seph who had been caught by the mine guards trying to steal fuel. By 16, he had begun to form himself into an image of his choosing, basing it on the old stories his father had given him and the stories that he had heard in the cantina and from Seph. He was a smooth talker, and he soon became a favorite of the tunnel guards for his honeyed words and entertaining personality. All the while, he held Uva’s ugly face in his mind, out for vengeance and planning.

At 17, Kas put into action a plan to escape. Using his silver-tongue he convinced many of the other slaves to help him, along with the very daughter of the mine boss, after a lust-filled pseudo-relationship between the dashing young Nautolan and her young, sheltered, but wealthy life. In the middle of the night, using the skills he had learned on the streets of Nar Shaddaa and in the dark tunnels, he snuck to the tunnel entrance, and choking out a guard through the bars at the entrance. Stealing the keys, he unlocked the doors, and snuck out into the night, where he met up with the mine boss’s daughter. He moved quietly, guiding a small entourage of other slaves through the mine camp. Each guard they encountered, Kas put down with relative ease, focusing on meshing his agile nature with the way Seph had taught him to fight, the resulting style flashy and impressive yet effective, and they armed themselves off of the unconscious men. Finally, they nearly reached the docks where a small planetary shuttle was waiting thanks to his lover’s assistance. Just as they were crossing the street, the mine boss flicked on the lights, shocking the slaves. The two that turned to shoot were put down by blaster fire, and Kas stopped dead in his tracks, hands in the air. The mine boss smiled, his daughter smiling back after betraying her lover. Kas smiled too as in a flash he grabbed her, spinning her around and placing the pistol he held to her temple. The mine boss’s face went slack as Kas spoke.

“Darling, I knew from the second you kissed me we were meant to be,” Kas said, a charming smile on his face, “Boss, if you’d kindly step aside, I’ve a date with destiny.” Kas pressed the pistol against her temple as he moved past the mine boss and his men, spinning to make sure the boss’s daughter was always between his body and the muzzles of the guards’ weapons. He backed to the ship, climbing in even as the other slaves were put down in an angry fit, dragging the girl in with him on the boarding ramp of the small shuttle. He put the pistol to her head, forcing her to prime the shuttle, and as they lifted off, he booted her from the closing loading ramp onto the landing pad as he took off. The small arms fire bounced off the hull, and he smiled as the mine grew small in the background.

Kas flew for as long as he could, toying with the way the ship’s controls as he flew and made his way from the mine in the direction he had seen some of the ore-haulers fly away from the loading dock. He quickly figured out the basics, and based on his ability to read thanks to the human in the mines, he had a basic idea of what the other buttons and dials were for. As the main port-city came into view, Kas put down roughly on a landing pad and made his way into the city. Quickly, he had sold the shuttle to a Rodian for a healthy amount of creds, far more than it was worth thanks to his skill with words. After buying a brace of pistols and some decent clothing, as well as showering and cleaning himself up, he chartered for Nar Shaddaa.

Once arriving, Kas quickly tracked down where Uva was operating. He came to her with an air of grandeur, completely unrecognized since their last meeting. Kas began his vengeance by offering his services to Uva, convincing her to use him at her leisure. Though skeptical of the smooth-talking stranger, Uva was thoroughly impressed by his dress and his words, and enjoyed the flattery and veiled humor Kas shared, as well as the mystery that surrounded him in a more sensual way. She took him on as one of her gangsters, and though he was new, quickly he showed an amazing business sense and proved himself streetwise on more than one occasion. He mostly served as an emissary after that, his natural charisma and gentleman-rogue personality fitting in better with higher class company than the Hutt he served. Eventually, he had earned Uva’s trust, and began to serve as her personal adviser, and it was then that he put into action the final part of his plan.

Now 24, Kas finally had the opportunity to enact his final vengeance on the one who had taken his parents. During one loud and boisterous night, after attending a prominent Hutt’s gala in Uva’s stead, he returned to her chambers to report. He came in with a roguish smile, and an exaggerated but graceful bow, delighting his master with a flirtatious compliment. The guards laughed, entertained by his demeanor, only to be shocked at the bullet holes in their chest as he spun out his pistols from their holsters, putting a round through each of their chests. Uva screeched as he shut the door, sealing the two of them inside. Even as she pressed her panic button, he smiled.

“My darling, surely you do not think me foolish enough to allow you the pleasure of even a single other man,” he spoke in a honey-thick voice, a deep seated cunning and veiled smirk hidden behind the veil of elegance in his diction. He strode to her stead, smiling charmingly at her as he pressed the barrel of his pistol into her chin, hatred showing in his face, despite his black and emotionless eyes. He leaned in close to her, whispering gently before squeezing the trigger.

“Everyone pays their debts, my darling.”

After, he transferred credits enough to buy a ship and set himself up to leave the Smuggler’s Moon. He was done serving others, and decided that it was time he realized his childhood games. Using the accumulated skills of his life, he’d earn all the wealth he could dream, and see the world, even if he had to start as a smuggler. He’d make the world his, no matter the consequence. Not for him a lifetime of hard work and low pay. No, a short life and an exciting one would be his motto.
Attributes and Skills

Strength: In shape, but not built like a tank. He is strong, and maintains good fitness, but is capable of no great feats of strength.

Dexterity: Kas is extremely agile, and when in a fight he ducks, dives, spins, and rolls with ease. His dexterity also extends to his normal movements, and he is an adept climber, and oddly enough a talented dancer.

Constition: While he is strong, Kas has a very hardy constitution, and his endurance is almost unnatural. Despite his deft movements in combat, he can usually outpace or outlast his foes, and the scar on his abdomen shows even if he is taken out of commission, he will eventually return to the helm.

Intelligence: Despite his skill as a pilot and a duelist, Kas' greatest weapon is his mind. He is incredibly intelligent, and has a strong mind for naval and ground strategy, as well as being incredibly creative. He will often come up with plans that seem almost impossible, yet under his hand they come to fruition to great effect.

Wisdom: Kas is what they call "wise beyond his years" and has learned through a rough raising and his time as a pirate what most learn through a lifetime of experience. Also, Captain Orayva has an odd "sixth sense" that keeps him from falling into traps, and his gut feeling is often more accurate than his best planning.

Skills

Strategy and Tactics - Kas has a peerless understanding of strategy, and his depth of knowledge of both naval and ground strategy is very impressive. He has a knack for thinking creatively to find solutions, often including some incredibly impressive feat just to show off.

Infiltration and Security - Kas is a skilled infiltrator, able to use his dexterity to move in shadows and remain hidden. While he usually uses this skill for small purposes, such as slipping from the planetary governor's daughter's chambers after a spice-filled evening, it does come in handy in his line of work. To add to his repertoire, he became an adept splicer, and can bypass most security systems with proper access or the right tools. Kas is skilled enough that he knows how to short out holding cells or rewire ray shields by hand.

Dueling - Kas preferred method of combat is the noble art of the duel, both with his brace of pistols and with his vibro-saber. In combat, the captain prefers personal melee, where he can truly outmatch his opponent in style as his ducks, thrusts, pirouettes, parries, and ripostes throw his opponents into disarray until he cuts them down. At range, he is also an excellent gunslinger using his custom pistols. Even with them, his signature combat style shows through, as he spins while throwing blaster bolts down range to take down his targets with an ostentatious flair.

Pick-pocketing - Perhaps for practicality, or perhaps through practice, Kas is a skilled pickpocket, able to lift pistols from their holsters or keys from a pocket usually undetected.

Persuasion - Kas is, in a word, persuasive. His ability to sway others is almost siren like, and his charm is infectious. Though this may be helped by his species' ability to detect and emit pheromones, Kas has a roguish charisma that is alluring to most, confident to all, and convincing to many. While the trick is helpful, he always seems to know exactly what to say to convince others to see things his way. His skill with words also lends itself to his skill as a businessman, and rarely, if ever, does he get the bad end of a deal. While he would make for an excellent politician, Kas prefers to use his skills to swindle, sway, con, and flirt his way across the galaxy.

Leadership - Kas is a natural born leader, which may be why he can get ahead in piracy. Perhaps one of the reasons is he is only a leader when he needs to be; his crew is free to do as they please until work needs done. It might be because he tends to see more than he does. Its not that he doesn't realize the value of hard work, its more that he also sees answers, solutions, problems, opportunities, enemies, and the like, as there is just as much call for understanding and thinking as actually doing the job. Lastly, he seems to have the uncanny ability to change his people. Most of those he meets have nothing, until he gives them purpose. Genuinely, he cares for his people, though in his own devilish way.

Piloting - Though he may not always be at the helm, Kas is a peerless pilot and has a habit of pushing any starship he flies to the limit. One of his favorite things to do is to pull off maneuvers that seem impossible, if only to show off due to his ostentatious nature. He also is daring enough to pilot in areas most wouldn't dare and come out unscathed.

Linguist - To assist with his dealings across the galaxy, Kas has studied various languages to fluency. He speaks Huttese, Twi'lek, Rodian, Mando'a, Basic, and all forms of droid speak.

Equipment

Gear
Wrist-com - a standard wrist-com, built into the cuff button of Kas' coat.

Utility Belt - Kas' utility belt is made of neo-leather, reinforced with plasteel compartments and couplings to better protect the contents. Essentially, it consists of two holsters for his custom blaster pistols, a sheathe for his vibro-saber, and a number of compartments and hard points to store his various gear, listed below.

Grappling Spike Launcher - This grappling spike and cable launcher, with accompanying reel, allows Kas to scale or rappel most surfaces with relative ease.

Holoprojector - a small, compact square holoprojector that can fit in Kas' palm is a detachable portion of the front belt buckle. It allows for holomaps, and holo communication. Linked to his comm-line, it can also record and transmit video to whoever is on the other end of the line.

Blaster Pistols - Kas nearly always has at least one of his custom blaster pistols on his person, ready to spit death at his enemies or anyone foolish enough to try and swindle him out of a deal. The weapons themselves are designed in an archaic body style, while not losing any potency of modern technology. However, their unique shape leads to each holding a charge of only 50 shots before requiring a reload.
swtor-r-30017-aikion-blaster.jpg

Vibro-Saber - Kas prized cutlass sits elegantly in a sheathe on his left hip, awaiting being drawn. When fighting, Kas becomes a whirling cyclone of flashing cortosis-weave steel. Hidden in the hilt lies the vibro-engine, cleverly fused into the pommel and elegant hand guard.

Clothing and Armor

Captain's Garb - Kas is generally always wearing his captain's garb, as shown in the picture. It is largely ornamental, with clasps, buttons, shoulder boards, and of course an embroidered cape. All of his clothing is well tailored, and he walks with a rigid posture suiting an admiral.

Verpine Armorweave - The innermost layer of all of Kas' clothing is always a featherweight underweave of Verpine make, designed to protect against slashes and energy attacks. While not particularly strong, its superior make generally protects from medium blaster fire for one or two direct hits and prevents bladed weapons from cutting him open.

Description:

YX-1980_space_transport.jpg

Based on the above diagram, I will go through in detail the description of the interior where needed.
1. Bridge – Here are located all necessary consoles, terminals and controls used to govern the ship’s navigation. Also located here, dropping down from the front on a pressure hinge, is located the main boarding ramp.

2. Captain’s Quarters – What originally housed the two crewman needed to pilot the YX-1980 has been converted into Orayva’s private stateroom. The bunks have been removed and replaced with a queen bed, and the walls are covered in an expensive-looking cream backing with gold accents along the floor and ceiling, as well as in an intricate lattice along the middle of the wall. Everything, from armoire that cleverly disguises a double opening storage locker where Kas keeps his clothes on a dummy-stand with his weapons neatly hanging from the doors on mag-hooks and the desk that houses a personal terminal where Kas keeps his logs and pulls information from the Holo-net, to the old-fashioned chest that runs along the end of his bed, is made from Taboon hardwood, including the bedframe. In a contrasting color, the floor is plated with a lighter color wood as well, though it is a high quality synthetic. On the wall opposite the main doors from the promenade, there is a beautiful painting of the seas of Glee Anselm in storm. In this, there is hidden a holo-screen for communication and entertainment. Behind it, if the secret button located on the underside of Orayva’s bedstead is pressed to release the false-mount hinges, is a safe where Orayva keeps his most treasured possessions, or the most dangerous. Along other parts of the room, exotic decorations hang. Most intriguing is an empty rack where all manner of weapons and armor can be hung, stretching from floor to ceiling. While empty now, Kas plans to fill this rack with the items of enemy captains or those who come to take him down. Next to this, the captain has a personal standing shower, accented the same as the rest of the room.

3. Navicomputer Room – This room still houses the Navicomputer, which is voice-locked to Kas for security reasons. Also in this room, the ship security console sits, with observation to each cargo-bay, the promenade, the port and starboard engine rooms, and down the main hallway, along with external cams to the main loading ramp and outside the port and starboard airlocks.

4. Cargo Holds – The segmented cargo holds are meant to prevent good loss and limit damage in case of attack, as well as evenly distribute weight across the hull of the Manta. In the 3 and 9 o’ clock holds, the floors have false panels as detailed above for smuggling compartments, each able to hold four adults, though not comfortably. In the 5 o’clock hold, nearest the navicomputer room, there are four ray-shield holding cells, along with a medical bay, though it only has a single bed. Each hold save the 5 o’ clock can be opened to the external of space after depressurizing to be used as an airlock of sorts, and if a small enough starfighter is inside, it may launch.

5. Promenade – Essentially little more than the main hallway, the promenade is rather plain. However, it does have a series of wall lockers directly behind the bridge holds weapon lockers to fight off boarders, or for quick access when attacking an enemy vessel. Directly across from this, nearest the passenger compartments, are larger lockers that hold enough Egis Armor Systems for the entire crew to use as armor or vac-suits, including Kas, though he prefers his own stylish clothing and skill compared to armor.

6. Passenger Quarters – Originally meant to be used as passenger staterooms, Kas had these rooms each refit to hold additional crew, replacing the single beds with a pair of double bunks and storage lockers, for four crew or passengers per room. Only one room, closest to the bridge on the starboard side, remains single person, and this is reserved for either a first mate or a guest.

7. Lounge/Galley – The lounge and galley is located aft of the passenger quarters. Here, two holo-tables surrounded by benches are situated, along with a larger one located center with chairs situated around it that Kas had installed to account for the larger crew complement. Each can be used as an image caster, for either shipboard comms, or for briefing the crew on a raid. An auto-chef sits in the corner opposite the tables, and along the other side sits a well-stocked bar; one that also has a good stock of spice.

8. Refreshers – Refreshers situated rear of the passenger compartments, with doors modified to open to the hallway rather than the lounge. Each contains a single toilet, a sink, and a sonic shower.

9. Engine Compartments – Each engine compartment houses engineering for the rear engines. In the port side, directly above the airlock that has the breaching bore, is a fast-rope mount and a winch for getting into an enemy vessel. In the starboard side, a workbench with all manner of tools is located, along with a single bunk behind a division wall for dedicated mechanic’s quarters.
