Kalam Mekhar, known by some as simply Kal, was a human padawan learner who lived during the Force Eternal era. Born into royalty, he was the heir to a small fiefdom on a long forgotten Outer Rim planet that would have been his whole world if not for the random encounter with a Jedi Knight who landed on their planet in search of lost artifacts. When she left the young princeling accompanied her, to be taken to Ajan Kloss to begin his training to become a Jedi. Finding himself pulled out of his small pond into the big wide sea, he must come to terms with his place in a much larger world as well as the powers and accompanying responsibilities he never was born with.
Born into nobility, Kal had a safe and loving upbringing, or as much as was possible in a land riddled with numerous minor kingdoms which were almost always at war with each other. He was groomed to one take over from his father to rule the small fiefdom that had been in their family for generations. He started learning to read and write at and early age, and by the time he hit his teenage years he was already being trained in the ways of war. But despite the regular raids by brigands and rival clans, and the fact that they lived in a land locked in an eternal war, he had what most would consider a fairly pleasant upbringing. His parents were loving, honorable people, his sister was his best friend and seemingly eternal confidant, and there was little wrong with the world.
Things changed when a ship landed not far from their home, and from within it emerged a Cerean Jedi. While aliens and off-worlders were not anything new to them, stories having been told about them for centuries, the lightsaber that she carried was something entirely new. She claimed to be a Jedi, something that had been little more than a myth to them, there to seek out an ancient artifact. She enlisted Kal and his sister's help on her quest, and in the few days that they were together she told them much about the Jedi and the state of the Galaxy at large. When they returned, she revealed that Kal himself has the potential to become a Jedi, if he was willing to leave with her and get the training that would help him discover his true self. A few days ago he would have said no, but the few days he had spent with her had changed everything. He wanted to take her up on his offer, but he knew he could not turn his back on his duty to his people. That was when his sister surprised him by telling him to go, promising to take over for him and protect their people as he would have.
It didn't take long for his parents to convince him that he could not turn his back on this opportunity, and so when the Jedi left for Ajan Kloss he accompanied her. It has been a few months since he began his journey as a Jedi, but he has already learnt much, and is looking forward with excitement to everything else that is there for him to explore.
At the core of Kal's personality is the desire to leave every place a little better than it was before his arrival. Be it something as simple as leaving a loaf of bread to feed a starving family, or as far-reaching as toppling a corrupt official oppressing an entire city. It started with his upbringing, where he was raised with the importance of looking after his people and protecting them at all costs. With his sister now taking over after his departure to become a Jedi, he has transferred that sense of responsibility to be the driving force behind the kind of Jedi he wants to be. He is, in his own words, out to help the little guy, happy to let others deal with their Galaxy spanning crises. Having realized just how insignificant he is after his exposure to the wider Galaxy, he is coming to terms with his own place in the world. Always something of a loner, he knows that limits of his abilities and how much he can accomplish working on his own, but he is content with the small positives he adds to the cosmic scales. Since leaving his home world he has also become a collector of trinkets. He tries to collect reminders of any significant encounters he has on his travels, but as almost everything he sees is novel to him, he ends up picking all sorts of small, and mostly insignificant, objects.
Trained since he was a child to be a warrior, Kal is a fairly competent combatant, though he knows little of the Force and has yet to even hold a lightsaber. He has started where most padawans begin, basic exercises to learn to consciously use the Force, and training sessions with staffs and vibroblades to prepare to some day wield the laser sword of a Jedi. He is fairly smart and well spoken, and generally quick on the uptake. He has basic technological knowledge, but most tasks are a learning experience for him as he has never flown a ship or held a blaster. Even flying a speeder is something he is only just beginning to get familiar with.
