we were told we could transfer, i think, from faction to faction. I may have read it wrong...

Faction leaders and other very high people from factions could get priority on high ranks, not a guarantee. Even so, I believe you were just a Sith Knight. Just because you were helping run training and there were no Sith Lords doesn't mean you get a very high rank in the Jedi. If that sounded harsh, sorry. No other way to phrase it.

What do you actually have to have done to become a master? I don't really think there's any clear cut list of things, but you know.

In canon, one of the things is that you have to have successfully trained an apprentice. The only known person who didn't have to train an apprentice to become a Jedi Master was Ki-Adi-Mundi, but that's only because he wasn't able to train one.
