Jakku

Western Reaches // Inner Rim // I-13 // One (1) sun // Two (2) moons // Type 1 atmosphere

Description

In the era proceeding the rise of the First Order, Jakku is an entirely different world. Not yet the world of rolling dunes and vast plateaus, Jakku is a world of lush jungles and vibrant life.

Jakku sits on the edge of known space, in the Western Reaches of the galaxy's Inner Rim. Many who study the stars call it the "threshold to the Unknown Regions," and, over the course of centuries, it has become a world in which many have turned to study the Unknown Regions themselves. As a result, the larger galaxy sees Jakku as a place of mystery and wonder, which has led many religious sects to the planet's jungles over the course of its history.

Despite the vibrancy of life on Jakku's surface, the planet has precious few settlements. Ruins of ancient temples scatter the surface from centuries long passed, but the only major settlement is called Feressee's Point, which lies along a raised portion of land, overlooking the vast Jakku rainforests. Feressee's Point is mostly a trading outpost, but has, overtime, become a hive of criminal enterprises and smuggling, among other illicit activities.

Climate & Terrain

Despite the vibrancy of life on Jakku, the planet is a cold world of near constant rain and drizzle. Monsoons are a common weather pattern across the planet and are known for being particularly brutal. During the summer season, the planet warms up slightly, and humidity spikes to almost unbearable levels.

The entire planet is covered in forests and mountains. Water is common, and the planet is known for having vast and powerful rivers, as well as deep lakes. Despite this, there are no visible oceans on the surface of the planet, as most of the planet's water seems to be confined to massive rivers and lakes, as well as vast subterranean reservoirs.

Places of Interest

Sacred Villages — Scattered across the planet are the sacred villages of Jakku. These villages, which are in reality merely the size of large campsites, serve as dwelling places for religious minorities seeking freedom to exercise their faith. Various smaller Force traditions, as well as those religions not affiliated to the Force often chose to build villages on Jakku, allowing their operations to grow here before expanding elsewhere. As a result, the number of sacred villages are always in fluctuation.

Pilgrim's Road — The Pilgrim's Road is a jungle trail that takes one through the jungles and across the Kelvin Ravine, leading to the largest and most prominent of the Sacred Villages. In recent years, the Road has been plagued by raiders, who seek to ambush wealthy pilgrims fleeing religious persecution.

Kelvin Ravine — The Kelvin Ravine is Jakku's largest canyon system, cutting directly through the thickets of its many forest systems. It is frequently the site of a sacred village, as it offers considerable protection from Jakku's wildlife and weather. As a result, the entire ravine has become somewhat of a quasi-holy site for pilgrims and religious refugees.

Carbon Ridge — Part of the larger mountain systems across Jakku's equatorial region, the Carbon Ridge rises above all of the nearby peaks. During the rule of the previous Sith Empire, it was the location of a temple, whose purpose is lost to history. The jungle has since reclaimed the temple, but the cold echoes of the dark side still remain, echoing out to its dark masters like a beacon and whispering of the secrets of the Unknown Regions.

Plaintive Hand plateau — Considered the "cradle of life" on Jakku, the Plaintive Hand plateau is easily the holiest site on the entire planet. The planet's natives consider it to be the location of the so-called Consecrated Eremite, a holy man who once called the plateau home. The nature of this eremite is unknown, and there are no known written record of who he was or why he is considered holy to the natives.

Intent

To create a canon account of Jakku for this timeline. According to supplementary information books, published following the debut of The Force Awakens, it was revealed that Jakku was not an arid desert world 1,000 years prior to the fall of the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic. Rather, it was a lush world, and some unknown cataclysm led to the development of the desert world we see on the big screen.
