Jack Thompson

Private Investigator

Canto Bight. This damn city. So beautiful. But up close, it's all gutter.

I was born in the City of Sin. Never liked it, but Canto Bight is like that nagging mother in law. You hate her nagging, but in the end you also love her, because deep inside, she really is all heart. Canto Bight is a shithole, it's true. Corruption runs rampant in every layer of society. Murder, rape, violent crimes are a fact of life, though visitors are never allowed to see this ugly face of the city.

But under the surface, you have the compassionate people, who every day fight in the war for their own souls, when they offer help to their fellow people. The stories they tell, the food they share, the hearts they open to strangers in need.

I've seen the best of the city, and I've seen the worst.

I love Canto Bight.

The name's Jack Thompson, private investigator. You would think that's a pretty interesting job description, especially in a place like Canto Bight. And it can be. Most of the time, though, it's the same job as everywhere else. A jealous politician who thinks his wife is cheating on him. A casino planning to hire a new employee, needing a background check done. And of course Banco de Canto Bight, who needs their security systems tested. Again. I'm on retainer for the bank; the Five Families expect the bank to keep their money safe, and for them to do so, their security systems need to always be cutting edge.

Boring stuff, really. But it pays well.

It didn't start like that. I spent my youth working in one of the casinos, first as an errand boy, then as a prizefighter. Lightweight champion for three years. The thing about Canto Bight is, unless you're born rich, you have to make your own fortune. Prizefighting pays well, but it's kind of like selling your organs on the black market. You only have so many organs.

Anybody who grew up poor in Canto Bight knows that the easiest path out of poverty is to become part of the problem with the city. That is, to say, join the Police Force - "The biggest gang of them all". That's what I did. I spent twenty years as a police officer, ten of them as a plainclothes detectie with the Homicide and Vice Squads. Funny thing about Vice Squad. You'd think in a city like Canto Bight, there would be no need for such a thing because it's all legal. You'd be wrong, but you would think so.

Long story short, after twenty years of corruption, violence, and catering to the rich, I had enough. I resigned, took my PI and concealed carry license, and opened my own private investigations agency. It was a smart decision. As it turns out there was no end of clients needing my help.

But lately, there's been a little too much of the good stuff. Too many murders, too many missing sisters, too many bank robberies. But mostly murders. It's like the city's underclass and criminal caste are shifting nervously under the skin of the city, anticipating the trouble that is coming in the world beyond the gilded atmosphere of Cantonica.

Meanwhile, the rich drink, gamble and gorge in pleasure just as always, oblivious to the fact that there is a world outside of the fantasy of Canto Bight.

SERIAL KILLER CAPTURED IN CANTO BIGHT

The serial killer known as 'The Sabacc Slasher', who has terrorized the streets of Canto Bight for the last two months, has been captured after an extensive manhunt by the Canto Bight Police Department, assisted by private detective and former Homicide officer Jack Thompson, 38, also a resident of Canto Bight and frequent advisor to the CBPD.

The killer, Roy Dex David, is scheduled for a public hearing in two days. The Mayor of Canto Bight, Mr Vokum Farr, Esquire, promises in a statement released by his office, that "Justice will be swift and ruthless in dealing with David", adding that "an example will be made of him as a warning to any other who would disturb the peace of Canto Bight for their own depravities".

This story is being updated.

CASINO FOUNDER ARRESTED FOR CONTRACT MURDER

Founder of the Bass Pro Casino, Money Snorris, was arrested Saturday by plainclothes detectives of the Canto Bight Police Department's Homicide Squad. The arrest took place at the Bass Pro Casino, at 2:30PM local time. Snorris was then taken to the downtown police station where he was booked.

A statement by CBPD Homicide Squad detective and lead investigator Jack Thompson says Snorris was arrested as part of the wider criminal investigation into the death of his long time business partner, Sshill Bates.

After the arrest, the Canto Bight District Attorney subsequently released a statement clarifying that Snorris is the main suspect in the investigation and is being charged with - among more than twenty charges filed - conspiracy to commit murder, murder by transferred intent, and racketeering.

Snorris' trial is scheduled for the 21st of this month, and will be headed by notorious judge Frank 'Hammer' Corrigan. Snorris' lawyer in a statement released after the arrest says that his client will plead "Not guilty" to all charges, which he says are false and a result of an unfair witch hunt by his political enemies after Snorris recently decided to run for mayor of Canto Bight.

CANTO BIGHT POLICE OFFICERS INVOLVED IN SHOOTOUT

Officers of the Canto Bight Police Department were involved in an exchange of gunfire this week, when plainclothes detectives of the force moved to intercept an ongoing bank robbery against the First National Bank of Canto Bight.

During the exchange, which took place on Fremont Street in the busy Red Light District of the city, one officer, Detective Jack Thompson, was wounded when protecting a pregnant woman by shielding her with his body. In addition, all three suspects were killed in the shootout.

Thompson was taken to the hospital immediately. His condition is reported as serious, but stable. He is being cited for a decoration for his courage, according to the Chief of Police. The CBPD in a statement apologized for the disturbance and any fear it might have caused, adding that such events are definitely not the norm in the city.

The Mayor seconded this in a press release, saying that Canto Bight is indeed a safe and lawful city, and that the news and political leadership must not let a few bad apples spoil the reputation of the city as a respectable and safe city.

CBPD OFFICERS ARRESTED IN INTERNAL AFFAIRS RAID

A dozen officers with the Canto Bight Police Department have been arrested by plainclothes detectives of the Internal Affairs division. The officers, according to a press release, are being charged with multiple cases of corruption, assault, racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and murder.

The detective in charge of the incestigation, Detective Jack Thompson, has worked tirelessly with the Chief of Police, Roger Hoffer, to weed out and rid the CBPD of the corruption it has long been known for. This culminated last spring in the creation of the department's Internal Affairs division by Detective Thompson and Chief Hoffer, which so far has been responsible for more than two dozen convictions despite internal and political resistance.

RESPECTED POLICE DETECTIVE RETIRES FROM PUBLIC SERVICE

Highly decorated Homicide detective and esteemed colleague Jack Thompson of the Canto Bight Police Department, announced his retirement from the CBPD today. As a police officer for twenty years, he is eligible for full retirement benefits.

In a statement to the Pig Gazette, Thompson says he plans to take a long vacation before starting his new career as a private detective in charge of his own agency.

Thompson during his career has earned a sterling reputation for hard, honest work. Among his highlights are the capture of assassin James Earl Bones, (who shot and killed the former head of the Cantino Crime Family, nearly causing a gang war in the city), and being the driving force behind the creation of an Internal Affairs division within the Canto Bight Police Department.

Mr Thompson will be sorely missed in the CBPD, but the Pig Gazette wishes him a succesful and prosperous career in his new profession.

This is a rough. I'll fancify it more when I have some quiet time. For now, this'll be my running character. He'll mostly do work on Canto Bight, I think, but I'll probably have to have him work off-world too. We shall see. If you're interested in doing a thread with him, gimmie a holler.

I'm planning to Art Decofy Canto Bight through my RPs. Make it more 40's like. People wearing hats, that sort of thing. We'll see how that goes. XD

Interesting character, but it would be nice to know more about him. I know he was born in Canto Bight and that he's at least older than 20, but that's about all I was able to gather.

Sorry if this sounds rude, I don't mean it to be.

No, man, you're fine and absolutely right. I've got a few ideas on expanding on this profile when I have time, and including some info like age and such.

That would be helpful. Other than that, I think he'll be a fun character. I look forward to reading some of your posts.

Hey there man. This is a really cool character. But keep in mind that as fresh level 1s, we all don't start out with any notoriety or reputation really.

Updated and fancified. If you read ANY of the part of my profile, make sure to take a gander at the Pig Gazette.

Edit: Also, removed the two mentions of him as being famous, from the profile, to reflect the coment above. :D

I really wish you would. XD He can become the victim of an assassination attempt and hire Jack as a bodyguard.

If you want to, that is. XD
