Brazen Repair Shop
Nar Shaddaa
*48 Hours Before Loss of Network Access

Ayasha and Kae’Leigh were right beside him in the small lounge that was shared with the Dio’s shop. It was the one common room that Dio and Vu'thari shared in their five years of working together on Nar Shaddaa. Many cups of caf and pints of spirits were consumed here, talking about every subject in the galaxy, except one…Jedi.

The galaxy was now aware that the Jedi remained and had been living in secrecy. It was for their protection, but also for the protection of their loved ones and the fledgling Galactic Alliance that had been so effective in the shadows recently. But now the Sith and the Empire knew of their existence—and they would be hunted…

Dio and Vu’thari were relocating to Ord Mantell with the deal finalized on Overture Repair and Engineering. It was an amazing space that would allow Mandalorian and Galactic Alliance operations to flourish along Burke’s Trailing. Many of Vu’thari’s padawans and Ayasha were also going with the Jedi Master to Ord Mantell. Vu’thari was also quite certain that Cory, Arturo and Vala would be joining Dio there as well.

It had gone on for five years out of necessity…the secrets. While Vu’thari never lied to Dio about it, he kept the truth from him. The Jedi Master believed his friend deserved to know the truth…as did Arturo and Vala. Cory was offworld seeing to her husband’ funeral, so she would have to learn of this another time. He felt for the young warrior, losing her husband to this war. She was broken up, but seemed content he died as a warrior…such was their way.

Dio, Arturo and Vala filed in, sporting their beskar’gams. It was rare Vu’thari saw the Mandalorians without them on, but he had—when they truly felt safe and when they truly needed to relax. It was also a sign that they trusted Vu’thari to not wear the armor around him…just another reason he needed to reciprocate.

They made themselves comfortable. He had asked them to come and that he had to speak with them about something very important. Vu’thari had introduced Ayasha to them, but there was very little interaction at all. They had also seen the blue-skinned twi’lek, Kaylee, around the shop, but no introductions were made.

It was going to awkward, weird, uncomfortable…but it was necessary.

“Thanks for coming…”

There was nothing quite like a good secret. They had a way of doing one of two things: drawing people closer together or creating a chasm too wide or deep to cross. In recent days, the greatest secret in centuries was plastered across the galaxy. Nobody with eyes to see or ears to hear had missed the announcement that the Jedi lived. In one fell swoop, all eyes had turned toward the fledgling order, some in hope but others in hate.

The schism that existed between the Mandalorians and Force users in general had existed since the inception of time. Ayasha and Vu'thari had been working alongside these fierce warriors in spite of their affiliations...largely due to the fact that Dio and his counterparts were unaware that “Jedi” was the title carried by the twi'lek and his.

The raven haired Knight sat beside Vu'thari in the lounge. Though her mind wandered to the outcome of the tough conversation they would have today, she remained a pillar of peace. Her honey colored eyes shifted from the windows to Kae'Leigh's face. She smiled warmly at her twi'lek friend, thankful for her presence. The woman's gaze moved to the Jedi Master and even without exchanging words, their eyes seemed to convey an entire conversation in seconds.

Ayasha's mind drifted to thoughts of Prax. He had quickly become the brother she had been missing since childhood. Though nobody could ever replace Ciqala, the former slave turned padawan had filled a place in her heart and had helped heal the wound left by the boy's untimely death. Prax was out on a mission and his presence was certainly missed as Vu'thari organized this gathering.

The Jedi's thoughts were interrupted as several Mandalorians outfitted in full beskar'gams filed into the room. The Knight nodded in their direction and smiled warmly, though she said nothing. She only had limited interactions with them leading up to this moment, though most of those encounters were nothing more than a nod or a kind smile in Dio's direction.

Undoubtedly this was going to be an interesting meeting. It was likely going to be full of a gamut of emotions of which Ayasha had already committed herself to monitoring. She would do her best to flood the room with tranquility, though she was anticipating tensions to run high, at least initially. The best outcome would be a calm conversation ending with the Mandalorians agreeing to work with the Jedi against their common enemy found in the Imperium and the Sith.

“Thanks for coming...” Vu'thari addressed the incoming group. These had been his coworkers and friends far longer than they had been Ayasha's acquaintances, but the Jedi Knight felt awkward simply sitting there in silence. She cleared her throat and glanced over at the twi'lek before looking to their Mandalorian counterparts. “We've been eager to speak with you about matters of great importance,” the woman added in a very diplomatic fashion.

Ayasha began to exude peace and tranquility from deep within herself, hoping to neutralize any ill feelings in the room before they even had a chance to manifest.

It had been a long few days of non-stop repairs, but Vala had finally made some serious headway and had her ship nearly back to the same condition it was before her little stunt rescue. This was a welcome distraction, whatever it was, and she made sure she washed off the last remaining grease before filing into the shop lounge beside her vode.

She unceremoniously fell back into one of the couches with practiced ease, then realized that to the two non-Mandalorians sitting across from her, she may have appeared kind of ridiculous lounging in full beskar’gam. It probably didn’t look comfortable. But to her, they were the ones who seemed more uncomfortable, with their serious expressions and straightened postures. Vala hadn’t spent a lot of time around aruetiise, and it probably showed through the few awkward interactions she had with them since she got here.

She was the newest addition to this cadre, having only recently come to Nar Shaddaa to join her brother Dio’s operation. She had no idea why they wanted to speak to all of them at once, but maybe this was a normal thing for them. After all, it was a common practice for Mandalorians to have weekly sitreps Trying to not let her confusion be plainly read across her face, she simply offered the pair a shrug and an impish smile. “Whatever gets me out from underneath the freighter for awhile can’t be so bad, right?”

Diocletian had been working with Vala on her ship for several days. He felt more than a little responsible for the damage to her ship and he wanted to assist her as much as possible with the repairs. They had been at it almost twenty-four hours a day for the past couple of days and it was starting to wear on Dio. They were almost done with their work, just a few electrical issues to run down to get the ship back into fighting shape. It always seemed to be that way when you repaired something in one of those freighters, the electrical would lead you on a merry chase.

He followed Vala into the shop lounge and made his way to the small fridge in the corner. He opened it and looked inside, selecting two bottles of something brown and undoubtedly alcoholic from the frosty confines. He tossed one of the bottles to Vala and then kept one for himself, which he opened and took a healthy drink from. After a moment or two he lowered the bottle and smiled, he had needed a drink for a while, and this seemed as good a time as any.

Looking at Ayasha and Vu’thari and their serious expressions he could not help but frown. This did not look like good news and quite frankly, Dio was in no mood to have his drink ruined by bad news. Then again you don’t get to choose when you get news and what type it is, so he took another drink from his bottle as Ayasha said they wanted to talk to them about important matters. Dio already knew they were rebels, he had known for a while now. If this had something to do with that, Dio really and honestly didn’t care, it was none of his business until they made it his business. That had been the deal he and Vu’thari had made a while ago. Dio really hoped this was not about to be any of his business.

He nodded to his sister’s assessment of the situation and added, “That rust bucket isn’t worth that monkey lizards’ farts. I don’t know why you don’t let me get you a better ship. It wouldn’t be too hard, and I might even let you fly it if you figure out where the cockpit is.” Dio knew the friendly banter between siblings might throw off the conversation a bit but he didn’t care. He had missed his sister and took every opportunity to pull her leg.

The Mandalorians were a group Kae'Leigh had never expected to meet. She had first been introduced to them by Vu'thari when they were working in the smaller garage. She'd forgotten what they'd named the place, but she checked them out just shortly after Vu'thari had met her. She hadn't gone in or anything. For once she saw they were armored like...all the time, she didn't want anything to do with them. The very sight freaked her out and she decided she'd never set foot in that place.

That was before Kashyyyk. That was before the crazy future visions of her as a Jedi. Coincidentally those same Mandalorians were on Kashyyyk at the same time as her. But there were a lot of armor toting mercenaries there. She wouldn't have recognized them if they were sitting at the same bar together. Which could have happened if she hadn't left there in such a hurry. The spiritual connection she shared with Ayasha, Vu'thari, and the other Padawan was a little too much for the blue skinned Twi'lek.

But after some calming talks the pink skinned Twi'lek convinced Kae'Leigh to train with them and the rest was history. Now she was back in the Mandalorian shop, only they'd moved since the last time she'd seen them. Except for Corrine and Arturo. Corrine she'd seen twice now, Arturo once. They'd borrowed her ship in order to procure a new one for the fiery redhead. Kae'Leigh wondered why she wasn't here, and was afraid to ask. She had a gut feeling she wasn't dead. They'd all seem a little more somber if that were the case. But something was bothering them. She just didn't know what.

As she looked around the new place she got distracted by all the things she wanted to play with. Kae'Leigh, while not an official mechanic, loved to fiddle with engines and such. When Vu'thari asked her to come the first time it was to potentially help them out in the shops and speed up the process of smuggling parts and weapons through their garage. Kae'Leigh was mostly interested in the grunt work of that because it meant working on speeders again. Though, she was far better at working the insides of the computers for she had a little bit of a reputation as a slicer. This news hadn't made it to the Mandalorians but along with their other big secret she was likely going to spill that too today.

One by one the other Mandalorians came to join them in the common room like area of the building. Even though she had a Jedi's lightsaber in her boot, she really didn't feel armed enough to be next to all the armory wearing jar heads. She had a single R-5 blaster pistol on her hip which had never failed to let her down. That was the only weapon she trusted to have. The lightsaber she was extremely unfamiliar with even though she'd had it for a few weeks now. Even on its lowest setting she'd already managed to give herself small burns over her arms and legs. Not fun. Not fun at all.

As such, her normal every day shirt had burns in it and had to be scrapped until she could buy a new one. She really did like that shirt. For now, she simply wore the leather vest that normally fell over the shirt along with a not-burned pair of pants. To give herself some sort of fashion and not make her Mandalorian hosts think she was some bum, she'd gone to wearing a leather headress common of that to the Twi'lek race. It covered the foreheads, wrapped around the ears, and then spiraled down her blue lekku above her head. It was very pretty to those who like that sort of thing.

Her Jedi mentor would start things off. She could sense he was troubled. Why wouldn't he be? He was having to explain to his friends of five years that he'd been sort kinda but not really lying to them. It was difficult in any situation, any way one would slice it. Kae'Leigh giggled to herself as she realized she'd made a slicing pun. Then solemnly bowed her head because she realized this was no time to make jokes. Her newest friend, Ayasha, would give her a smile which she warmly returned. Oh crap! Did she read her mind!!??

Ayasha then looked to the group of warriors and continued in place of Vu'thari. It would be just like her to pick up his slack. She'd known she had a certain emotional connection to him, but why confused her to no end. It wasn't her business and she tried to stay out of it. But in her heart Ayasha was still a good person and she could tell Vu'thari was struggling with her words. So she'd do it for him. Maybe from her it wouldn't feel like such a betrayed like if it had it come from Vu'thari instead. And the way she spoke was another reason Kae'Leigh really admired the girl. She had a totally calm aura. All the time. How ever did she do it?

The girl, Vala if she recalled right, would then make a quip about whatever got her out from underneath the freighter. Kae'Leigh gave a half-hearted smile even if the girl wasn't looking specifically at her. She'd wished they'd called her to help. She would have jumped at the chance. But she understood it was more of a family matter and they probably didn't trust her yet. Hopefully today would change that.

The girl's brother, Dio -which she knew for sure-, would then tease his sister about how her ship was a rust bucket. Kae'Leigh knew the kind of ship they were talking about from past conversations she'd overheard. Vala owned an Overhead class freighter. Repairs would have been super easy for the Twi'lek and she might have even thrown in a few upgrades for free. Had they asked. Maybe she'd offer now.

"You know those old Overheads run pretty slow at times, but if you crack open the compression coils and add a few ventral hoses they purr like a kitty...."

Kae'Leigh realized everyone was looking at her now and she blushed and looked away. Maybe this wasn't the best time to be talking about ships. She looked down at herself and would sigh. Everyone else seemed to sure of themselves. Confidence was not something the blue skinned Padawan had when it came to dealing with large groups. One on one she'd do alright. But around this many people she didn't really know...it was overwhelming to say the least.

Arturo was the last one through the door, and he made sure it was closed and secured before following after his two friends. It had been a long week, and the evidence showed on his face; there were bags under his eyes, and his expression was set in a constant scowl. The walk over hadn't been joyous, to say the least. He had been a third wheel to the siblings and their mischievous ways for what had felt like a millennia, doing his best to just grin and bear with it. He had even uttered a silent prayer to whichever gods had lacked the sense not to listen to him, thanking them for the small mercy they had shown him, their destination drifting into sight. I'm happy for them, truly, he told himself, peeling off from the duo to find a seat of his own. But their happiness is costing me...

If he was being honest with himself -which, he sorta half was- their endless back 'n' forth banter wasn't all that bad. Arturo knew it had been a while since Dio'd last seen his little sister, and he couldn't fault his vod for spending time with her. Getting caught up on catching up seemed like the only natural outcome after so long apart. Yeah... After a while of it, the days had begun to drag, and Arturo had done his utmost to find work away from them. He had settled for scrubbing the old workshop of any sensitive information the business partners had left behind- which was to say, very little. Now that they were using the site on Ord Mantell as their main base of operations, it seemed like the smart thing to do. The move was only halfway done though; there was still things that needed sorting.

He pulled up a pew to the left of Vala, grabbing a beer for himself before kicking back and relaxing. Arturo nodded a greeting to Vu'thari, practically ignoring the Twi'lek's two acquaintances, Kae'Leigh and... He forgot the other one's name- Something Waya? He took a swig of his drink, noting as he did the tension filling the small confines of the workshop, irritatingly palpable. Arturo knew what conflicting emotions looked like, just as well as he knew the look doubt left when it crossed a man's mind. This can't be good.

He put his beer down, allowing Vala the time she needed for a witty retort, or whatever you want to call it. He owed her at least that; he owed Dio a great deal, and, in a way, that debt somehow extended to his young sister. A heartbeat or two passed; Arturo sought Vu'thari's gaze, and found it.

"What's this about, Vu'thari? Why're we here?"

They were all here. He was missing Cory, but perhaps it was best her clanmates broke the news to her. He wasn’t too sure she would be exactly pleased with “Vu Vu’s” revelation. The twi’lek made sure to meet the eyes of the Mandalorians in the room: Vala, Arturo, and Dio. Music was playing in the background, as was the group’s tradition whenever they spoke on topics not befitting the ears of Imperial Hutta agents.

“This is awkward…but I owe you the truth.”

Pause.

“For five years, this group of Mandalorians has trusted me with your lives and I with yours. Know that I have never lied to you about anything. In fact, when we became members of the Galactic Alliance, I told you soon after…”

Silence.

Looking down and then meeting the eyes of the Mandalorians once more, he sighed and then gestured to the ones beside him as he spoke, “But I did hide a truth from you…and I am sorry I did. This is Kaylee, she is my Jedi Padawan. Ayasha is a Jedi Knight…I trained her. I am a Jedi Master, one of the last five that I know of in the galaxy…”

Knowing the Mandalorians as he did, some might get a chuckle at how preposterous the whole notion of his words were…but he knew Dio would not. Vu’thari knew Dio would know he was telling the truth and this was no ruse. For the sake of the other Mandalorians in the room and to accentuate his words, his eyes remained fixed on Dio as his beer slid across the kitchen counter, crossed the air between them and gently came into his waiting hand on the couch. Gently, he placed the glass down and hoped he would not get shot in the face…

As the Mandalorians filed and and found a seat, a heavy awkwardness filled the air between them. Ayasha could not ignore the uneasy sensation in the atmosphere, and try as she may, the peace and tranquility she exuded could hardly compete. The Knight smiled warmly as Arturo questioned the purpose of the gathering. She knew that Vu'thari had taken time to think over how he would reveal their affiliation to their warrior friends, but there was no easy way about it. It seemed that utter transparency would be the best road they could take at this point.

“This is awkward...but I owe you the truth,” the twi'lek began before pausing for a long, silent moment. Ayasha shifted uncomfortably in her seat as her eyes moved across the various faces in the room. She turned her head and glanced at the Jedi Master, offering him a reassuring smile. The pink skinned alien began by speaking of the relationship he had developed with the Mandalorians over the past five years.

Another long pause followed as Vu'thari searched for the words to deliver the revelation. His eyes fell briefly before rising to meet those of the warriors across from him. Ayasha's gaze shifted and joined the Jedi Master's as he sighed and gestured to the Knight and padawan. “But I did hide a truth fro you...and I am sorry I did,” he continued before introducing Kae'Leigh, his student and then informing the bunch that Ayasha, whom they had been working beside was not simply a hydraulic engineer in the shop, but a Jedi Knight that had been trained by Vu'thari himself.

The twi'lek continued, admitting that he was a Jedi Master...one of the last five known to remain in the galaxy. Ayasha watched the Mandalorians for a reaction. The silence became increasingly awkward as the seconds ticked by. “We had no ill intentions for withholding this information from you. We only wished to remain safe as well as keep you free from the threat that would inevitably come for us,” the Knight added in gentle tones. Though she knew the men and women could more than look out for themselves, it had been a courtesy to keep the burden of the knowledge of the Jedi's identity from them.

Ayasha was tempted to avert her eyes from the gazes of those across from them, but she did not. In light of recent events within the galaxy, it was time to inform these warriors who they were. Vu'thari held them in high esteem and the Knight certainly respected them enough to share this knowledge with them. Though the future had grown increasingly uncertain and at times rather bleak, the Jedi knew that they would need to trust in those closest to them now more than ever.

SMASH.

Diocletian’s beer bottle slammed against the wall where he had thrown it. A whirlwind of emotions flowed through the Mandalorian as he processed the words from someone he had trusted for years. A being that he had called friend, had fought and bled with, was not the person he had thought he was. Vu’thari had lived and worked with Dio for years. They had shared food, a workspace and conversation for over five years. It was not like the subject of Sith and Jedi had never come up. It had, on multiple occasions, and so the twi’lek knew about Dio’s issues with Force users. It was not like his opinions were a personal matter for Dio. The Mandalorians as a people were averse to the users of the Force. They did not trust them and took great pleasure in killing them. It had been that way for Dio’s entire life.

After throwing the bottle, Dio gave Vu’thari one last look of betrayal and then turned and walked out of the room. He needed time to process this and sitting in that room with the very people he considered to have betrayed him would do no good. He knew the other Mandalorians in the room would have their own reactions to the news. Just like he knew that they would not do anything stupid. He wondered what had happened to make Vu’thari tell him now, at this moment. They had just obtained their new shop, everything appeared to be looking up for them. It made no sense to the Mandalorian but at the same time the whole situation didn’t make sense.

Dio walked out onto a balcony that looked out across Nar Shaddaa. He was angry, he felt betrayed and he was not sure what to do. He had been so focused in his life, he had always known exactly what to do in every situation and maybe that was why this was so hard for him. It should be easy, either the twi’lek and his people were his friends, or they weren’t. But it was never that easy. He had his heritage and what made him who he was. He was a man who did not abandon his friends, but he was also a Mandalorian and those roots ran deep in the tree of non-trust in Force users.

Then there was his House, Clan and heavens help him, his duty to this Mand’alor to take into consideration. The Badgers would not understand. Why should they? They had been brought up with the same prejudices that he had. Many of them had lost things to Force users. Friends. Family. Body parts. They would happily cut off Vu’thari’s lekku and serve them up to him as soon as look at him. He was a Field Marshall in the Army of Mandalor. He had responsibilities to his nation and his House. This little bombshell was causing him to reconsider everything he knew or thought he knew about his life.

Dio leaned on the railing circling the balcony, the weight of all of this suddenly falling on his shoulders.

Another Mandalorian would walk in and come to a seat beside his friends. Sheesh. How many of them were there? She knew that their group was large, practically as large as the Padawans that Vu'thari had come to...was collect a wrong wrong to use? Still, the way they were all filing in now was daunting and making the young Twi'lek feeling more and more crowded in a room of people that didn't trust her. She'd eye the man who'd just came in -who looked ready to shoot someone down just for looking at him- as he grabbed a beer for himself and the other male Mando. Their eyes would meet for a moment and she quickly looked away, just in case he did have that kind of temper.

And then it was time. Vu'thair had to say what needed to come out. He premised it by saying he'd never lied to them, and that the moment he'd joined the Galactic Alliance he'd told them right away. But what he did not tell them was that he was a Jedi. The very danger that could bring the Sith right to their door for even finding out. They would all be persecuted and likely executed in their hunt to capture those Jedi. And Vu'thari had hidden that fact for five years. Kae'Leigh understood how their reactions would be mixed. He introduced Kae'Leigh to them, now revealing her true status within the Galactic Alliance as a Padawan Jedi. Kae'Leigh looked up only for a moment to give them an awkward smile before hiding her head back down. Vu'thari then did the same to Ayasha. Kae'Leigh looked over to her as she then began to speak for herself. Should Kae'Leigh have said something...? It was too late now.

Ayasha explained to the group that their well kept secret was to protect them. Kae'Leigh knew the Sith were dangerous, but looking at the Mandalorians now she had no doubt in her mind these warriors could protect themselves. They were wearing their armor around the house for crying out loud. Who in their right mind did that? They were clearly asking for a fight and she imagined they would take the thought of dishing one out against the Sith a privilege.

Then a loud breaking and shattering sound would made Kae'Leigh jump. She wasn't nearly as attuned to the Force as her mentor and friend were, so she wouldn't expect the bottle Dio had thrown to go sailing into the wall. Adrenaline dashed through her veins from the sudden start she received. Her eyes were wide for a moment as her head whipped around to the now broken bottle; glass and liquid everywhere. Her eyes then looked to the man responsible. He had such a look of hurt and betrayal on his face it broke Kae'Leigh's heart just looking at it. He said nothing and just exited the room. The blue skinned Twi'lek turned to her male counter part to see how he'd taken it. She had this driving instinct to go after Dio herself, but she felt it might be best if someone who knew him better followed.

"I'll um....go get a mop," she would say to try and be helpful. Kae'Leigh then rushed off from this awkward encounter to go clean up the mess Dio had made. Sure a droid could do it, but this would keep Kae'Leigh out of the conversation and out of the awkward drama growing between them.

Finding a bucket, a broom, and a leather glove -the boys would use one of those when welding- she came back and start to pick up the pieces of larger glass on the floor. She had set the mop aside to clean up the smaller pieces and what she could of the spilled booze after. Though she imagined she should have grabbed a mop and not a broom. One problem at a time. While she worked she tried to keep her ears open for what was going on behind her so she wasn't totally out of the loop as they talked. Her mind was racing with things to say and how to apologize to them, but then she remembered she had nothing to apologize for. Kae'Leigh had joined the Galactic Alliance to save people. And that meant the Mandalorians too. They should be happy for her, putting her life on the line for other people. Wasn't that worthy of their respect?

Arturo stood, glared at Vu’thari followed by a stream of Mand’oa cuss words. He motioned for Vala to follow him out and she did. Vu’thari stood and looked over to Kae’Leigh and Ayasha, “Give us a moment…”

The Jedi Master wasn’t really sure what response he was looking for and he supposed this was what he surmised would happen. But he had to tell him the truth. The galaxy was changing, he was changing…everything was changing and changing quickly. The twi’lek moved out on the balcony, but far enough over to give Dio some space. He leaned on the balcony looking out into the busy city lights. Vu’thari could sense the emotions rolling off of Dio: betrayal, anger, confusion, conflict…

He felt ashamed he had not told him earlier. But he hadn’t told anyone about that life…

Quietly, the twi’lek spoke to his friend, “I told you I had a family, much like yours. A wife, two small children. We lived on Ryloth and I lost them. These things you know…they are the truth. There is more to the story. The Sith found my boy. They found out he could move little toys with his mind. Word spread and they came for him. Despite my best efforts, I could not get us away in time. Before I could return in time to save them…my wife and two children were cut down by the Sith. All three of them, cleaved, by a red lightsaber…”

A big speeder whizzed by, loud enough to cut off the sound. Waiting a moment for it to pass, Vu’thari continued, “I was so angry…but I knew that if took my vengeance on that group of Sith, I would slide into darkness…so I came here, never to be that Jedi again. When I met you, I had put that life behind me. That life was behind me for over four years…”

Pause. The twi’lek knew he was horrible at this stuff. There was a chance his words were falling on deaf ears anyway, but he felt like he had to explain the “why”. He owed the truth to his friend at the very least, knowing things might not ever be the same between them again.

Looking over at Dio, he said, “The Jedi are near extinct. My grandfather was a Jedi and stressed the importance of ensuring these jetii did not die out. Part of my hesitation came from Mandalorians being the ones who nearly wiped out all of the Jedi, centuries ago...so I was conflicted. I truly wanted to tell you. I couldn’t bring myself to do it, until now…”
