There could be a survivable world war. It'd either have to be conducted by non-nuclear power or those powers could refrain from it. Or they could be nations with small nuclear yields.

If it was conducted by a non nuclear power then it wouldn't be a world war and if it was conducted by countries with small nuclear arsenals it wouldn't be a world war.

Think....

There are quite a few powerful nations which have no nuclear arsenal. And with sufficient allies, I could see the potential for a conflict on a global scale if they wanted.

Both the Brits and French still have possessions all over the world and both have under a 500 warheads. If they were crazy enough to go to war with each other, it could be global in scale.

So if we went to war with the French all the fighting would centre on the Falkland islands would it?

Rather then the English Channel.

Don;t be a tard, WW3 = endgame.

Yes. It will eventually happen. There will be another big war eventually.

It could occur over much of the world. Both nations have control over small islands in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. Of course, most of it would be concentrated around the channel but colonies could definitely contribute such as in their previous wars with each other.

I really don't think those small islands could do anything significant. Matt is right; WW3, if it happened, would be a global nuclear holocaust.

And you need to post in the Same-sex Marriage thread. I will not be ignored! :CStern:CStern

I didn't say they would do anything significant. I just said they could be involved. Like some of the naval battles around the Caribbean in the American Revolution.

I'll get to it sooner or later. :CStern

I don't think it's a world war unless there's significant war all over the world...

And it best be sooner, not later. :CStern

So does that mean that WW1 wasn't actually a World War? Obviously, there were fights in the various German colonies in Africa, China, and the Pacific as well as a couple mutinies against allied powers. However, the vast majority of the conflict was centered around Europe and the Middle East.

But countries all over the world were involved in that fighting. The battlefields were in certain areas, but the war itself was global, if you follow my meaning.

So you count the Korean War as a world war because so many participated but not the War of Jenkins Ear where the battle field did extend through much of the world?

To be perfectly honest, I just count what my history lessons called WW1 and WW2 as world wars. I assume there's a good reason they received that title when others wars didn't. I don't even know what the War of Jenkins Ear was.

edit: And I don't care either. Please oh please do not explain it to me. :P

But it'd be so fun! Why can't you appreciate the War of Jenkin's Ear? :CCry1

Two reasons. Number one: it has a silly name. Number two: your mother.

Now get your ass in the gay marriage thread so I can continue to pwn you in our FABULOUS DEBATE! :CStern

:CIsee Don't tell me this... I'm a marine... And wars suck... I'd rather there not be another big war, or have it beyond my lifetime... You know, when I'm dead and have great great grandchildren?

I appreciate the War of Jenkin's Ear, but a better example of a world war would be the Seven Years War.

It wasn't even a war, merely an episode in the BRITAIN WANTS ALL THE OCEAN fights.

Well, I was demonstrating that merely two countries going at it could still fight all over the world. As opposed to the Seven Years war where you had two alliances going at it around the world.

So basically you'd rather have your decendants die instead

I believe the worlds at the point of uncertainty. Fifteen years ago I would have said no but given the political and economic unrest filling the world these days, I think that anything is possible. Do I think a new World War would compare with the past two? Most probably not. It was brought up in an earlier reply on the first page that Russia, China and the United States are playing nice but again, anything could act like a trigger.

Oil.
Territory.
Military Supremacy.

No one honestly knows but I firmly believe the world is can just as easily slip into a world war as it can in avoiding it.
