Easily the most prominent memory anyone would have of the IBS tower was its uncomfortable aura. It sounds like a stupid thing to say, that a building has an aura, but it is painfully true - in the case of the IBS building, it is almost like the architect had deliberately planned for it to be as foreboding as possible. Residing a walking distance from the Imperial Palace itself, the IBS Tower stood out like a shark fin, imposing, brutal against the dark skies. Across what would be known as the Anterior Angle stood dozens of satellite dishes which served to broadcast and receive information via a network of holonet buoys across Imperial Space.

I stood on the sixtieth floor, the main broadcasting room, slightly off to one side, hooded and observant of the goings on under the cameras and lights before me. Filmed for holo-broadcasting, the man who read the news bulletins was the latest of several the IBS has made use of in recent months. Brought in from various worlds, all new arrivals were provided with cosmetic treatment, and memory wipes so as to ensure they all looked the same, and then the broadcast was sent out at a slight delay; so as to avoid any repeats of the outburst of anti-imperial sentiment I needed to cut off a month back.

It was best this way, no surprises. If a broadcaster kicked off, we literally had another waiting in the wings. I watched as the producer gave the reader their script, an Inquisitorial Agent loomed close by, redacting bits of information to make it safe for transmission. He looked up at me. He nodded; everything was ready. I waved my hand and the non-essential staff left the staging area.

In front of the camera, the reader looked painfully alone, behind; it could not be further from the truth. A line of Stormtroopers, the Ministry of Information logo emblazoned on their chests, stood at the exits to the room, next to me stood my Inquisitorial Agent, and I myself stood off to the side, watching the director and camera crew for the slightest mistake.

Free press indeed.
