DESCRIPTION​

The I4 Ionizer is a starfighter based on the old Y-Wing light starbomber, designed and produced by Koensayr Manufacturing and marketed primarily to law enforcement agencies throughout the Galaxy. Utilizing improved engines and a slightly scaled-down space-frame, the Ionizer has a number of performance advantages over its predecessor, and still retains much of the simplicity and ruggedness of the original design. It has a single pilot, plus an astromech droid, 70 kilograms of cargo capacity and consumables for up to a week in space. It can reach speeds of 90 MGLT, and has a class 1 hyperdrive.

These things are not what make the Ionizer unique, however.

The I4 Ionizer, unlike most starfighters, carries very few directly lethal weapons. Its armament consists of 4 medium ion cannons, 2 on each wingtip, with a pair of light laser cannons in the nose. Also present are a pair of torpedo launchers, which are normally equipped with ion torpedoes. Using these weapons, the Ionizer can disable nearly any vessel it is likely to go up against; its ion torpedoes are even capable of stopping small capital ships in their tracks, especially with several Ionizers ganging up on a single target. Once disabled, the un-shielded enemy ship can be dispatched using the fighter's laser cannons, or towed away using a rear-facing tractor beam, which is effective for grappling ships up to the size of a light freighter.

The Ionizer does pay for this "stunning" firepower, of course. Due to the large number of ion weapons aboard and their unique power systems, the Ionizer has no shields. Its speed is also slightly lacking compared to some other fighters, although its improved handling goes some way toward correcting this.

Overall, the Ionizer has found success with its target market, that being law enforcement agencies, private security firms and bounty hunters, although it is something of a niche product and isn't as widely successful as more generalist models. They are not a common sight in the Galaxy overall.
