I was SO depressed and shocked today because during my 6th period class everybody started getting texts from their friends at a nearby highschool about how some kid jumped off of a building and died. It made me feel like any of the problems I had were so insignificant. Plus, it sucks that the boy didn't manage to get some sort of help before he made that decision. :CCry1

Unfortunately, this is a growing epidemic in the US... it's a sad reality and something schools and parents seem reluctant to recognize and act on.

Trell is right, it is a growing problem throughout America.

My town lost twelve kids to drug overdoses and suicide last year. Three so far this year.

A lot of people here blame it on a sense of hopelessness the younger generation has due to unemployment, underemployment, debt, drug culture, etc.

Sigh... What kind of culture do we live In where suicide like this is relatively commonplace? It's sickening, truly sickening.

Certainly, it is a tragedy and efforts should be taken to prevent it if possible. However, does anyone have any links suggesting that it's increasing?

I don't think teen suicide rates are increasing, I think they are just getting more media attention due to how vastly connected society is. However, I haven't taken the time to look at the statistic information, so I could be wrong.

I think New Zealand (Whatup ya'll) actually has a higher teen suicide rate than America.

It's pretty sad that these kids feel like there's nowhere else to turn to when things are tough. :\

it's made more sad, that by the time you get to be an adult and have to tackle actual more life or death issues you look back on the late teen years and laugh simply because " all the drama, stress, frustrations" etc etc were almost comically nothing

so when you see kids thrown over the line it's pretty heartbreaking

Though my opinion is parents and schools in general have started to fail helping kids build up the mental and emotional fortitude and ability to cope in favor of ( everyone is special-hand holding-yet we want you to be drones) mentality. Thats just my opinion from observing my kids friends and their and parents and a major reason I pulled my boys out of public school.

this is completely untrue. How many adults gets savagely beaten every day at work? Or verbally and emotionally abuse? I've once heard about a High Schooler whose "friends" decided it would be funny to smear his face with excrements. That sort of abuse tends to stick. Doesn't happen too often with adults, no? Truth is, high schools are cruel places, and it makes no sense for people to trivialize these issues. The whole "OH let children be children" mentality needs to change already, it's not because they're kids that their issues aren't serious.

I agree with Sin. And I also agree with Adena. A lot of the stuff kids deal with in high school can be trivial. But on the other hand there's a lot of dark bad shit they go through. It's ok when we say that a lot of these things are just part of being kids, but we've gone too far with that.

As Rick Mercer said, its not enough anymore that we tell kids its going to get better, we need to make it better for them, right here, right now.

Most of it's all bullshit that doesn't matter, that emotional or physical abuse. Either between friends or some douchebag whose stuck in the 80s and doesn't know how to handle himself differently. And he's usually the one with the real problems. And everybody goes through it, and the ones who make it through ALWAYS look back on high school and laugh at how pointless all the stupid stuff that went down then, whatever abuse taken along with countless other dramas and idiocy that you and your friends did back then. Which is why it's sad that the kids who can't handle it, whether it be a great deal of it or not, can't live to see the day where they get to laugh.

So the girl who killed herself after the mom of an ex friend of the little girl created a fake Facebook profile as a boy her age, befriended her, pretended to be her boyfriend for months, and then broke up with her, told her the truth and then goaded the little girl to kill herself, she should of just been tougher? No. I will forever disagree with that. What you seem to forget is that while in the grand scheme its unimportant and they'll realize that a lot of it isn't important when theyre older, guess what? It's important to them right now, its real to them right now, it doesnt matter what we think about it, even if were right. What matters is what's important to them, what they deem is a big deal. So no, I don't agree with the, oh who cares they're only kids line.

Half the time said abuse and bullies get fired up is also immature and childish at the base cause usually that is again as said something trivial and of absolutely no real concern in the years to come, it is however blown way way way out of proportion and acted on with a childish- yet savage- immaturity. Not saying in every case the one getting bullied is at fault, yes perhaps someone could have helped with the coping ability- but it's also on the other end of " how retarded and immature do you have to be to want to bully someone because they may have a different body shape, skin colour, etc etc

then again the justice tends to come with those types " more often than not" grow out of it, or usually end up with a pretty crappy adult life

*edit*

my main main thing Im getting at is this:

Everyone has had to deal with bullies and being picked on...Some had the fortitude to fight back, and or ignore it, or just take it in stride everyone...

When I was at that same age YES you heard periodically about someone doing themselves in but it was so rare that it tended to make headlines

in that time there was also a shift in how schools approach ( or dont) things, and parent became more detatched and use the internet and games or tv as babysitters and are less involved or thinking the schools would do something to help ( because they use to)

the fact those changes happened and at the same time we see this growing problem is more than coincidental
