  • - DESCRIPTION -

"If Coruscant is the Galaxy's heart, 'Melder is surely one of its valves."
    _Unknown spacer.

Hemelder Aurek, also known simply Hemelder or 'Melder, is a moon of the ice giant planet Hemelder. Located in the Jolex System, which itself is located advantageously at the crossroads of the Lesser Lantillian Route and Ootmian Pabol hyperlanes, Hemelder is a notable for being a major trade-world in the region, with its many habitable moons and asteroids host to all kinds of colonies and commercial enterprises.

Of particular note among these moons, however, Hemelder Aurek - as mentioned, simply referred to as Hemelder by most beings - has made a name for itself as the system's crown jewel, mostly overshadowing its neighbors in the system. The planet has become a regional transportation hub, and is entirely covered by a massive, multi-level spaceport and freight handling complex. This titanic complex, built layer by layer over thousands of years, has become the regional hub for a large number of shipping firms and aerospace lines operating in the Galactic East; its position at the intersection of two significant hyperspace routes means that it processes swarms of spacecraft on a daily basis, with huge formations of ships of all shapes and sizes visible in the planet's skies at any given time.

Perhaps the planet's most striking features are its massive docking towers, spires which stick up above the planet's atmosphere and primarily act as terminals passenger liners, with the largest aerospace lines owning entire towers reserved for their own operations. These towers - in addition to their docking rings, hangar bays and massive terminal concourses - have huge baggage handling facilities, hotels for passengers on layover, dining establishments, shopping and entertainment complexes, aerospace traffic control centers and - in the lower levels - freight handling areas. The rest of the planet's surface is layered with warehouses, industrial parks, repair yards, employee residential districts, administrative centers, travel booking offices and - of course - thousands of square kilometers of surface parking for starships.

The entire planet is served by an efficient network of transfer tubes providing free public transportation. This is important for beings traveling on-planet, as the skies of Hemelder are reserved exclusively for starship traffic; non-commercial airspeeders are prohibited from operation in public airspace, although swoops are not.

  • - HISTORY -

The moons of Hemelder were colonized long, long ago by pre-hyperdrive sleeper ships from the Core Worlds, Hemelder Aurek among them. As the inhabited moons were all in relatively close proximity, this facilitated the practice of interplanetary commerce within the system, leading to a robust tradition of spacefaring among the locals. Hemelder Aurek, due to its stable orbit, became something of a hub for early cargo and passengers service between the moons, and when hyperspace technology eventually spread to Hemelder, Hemelder Aurek - with its well-established spaceport facilities and population used to handling spacecraft - became the system's gateway to the Galaxy.

As the Galaxy was slowly charted, and hyperlanes established, Hemelder found itself at the crossroads of the Lesser Lantillian Route and the Ootmian Pabol, the latter being a major route into Hutt space. As a result of this, Hemelder Aurek became a major stopover between what would become the Outer Rim and the Core Worlds; with the infrastructure already largely in place, Hemelder Aurek quickly cemented its place as the Crossroads of the Mid Rim, a title it holds to this day.

During the opening phases of the Hundred-Year Darkness, Hemelder Aurek was considered to have enough strategic significance as a transport hub that it was briefly garrisoned by the Grand Army of the Republic as an Ordinance/Regional Depot, the first ORD designation to be issued since the early days of the Republic; Hemelder Aurek was well defended, and was bypassed by Exile forces on their way to the Core. As the conflict simmered down, however, the garrison was recalled, and the name "Ord Hemelder" did not stick.

In the present day, with the depressed Galactic freight shipping and passenger transport industry, Hemelder Aurek is not nearly as busy as it once was, with vast portions of its considerable infrastructure dormant. However, it is still a major hub for the Mid Rim, and one of the busiest spaceports outside the Core Worlds.

  • - GOVERNMENT -

Hemelder Aurek's government is based on a corporate model, with a council of shareholders representing the very largest of the major shipping firms, passenger lines and other commercial interests operating on the planet. Citizens of the planet are issued a share in the "governing company," guaranteeing them certain rights and privileges, including the right to use certain government-provided services, and a guarantee of free expression. These shares are issued at birth, and cannot be revoked or transferred; new shares can also be purchased from the government, however, meaning that it is possible to buy citizenship on Hemelder Aurek. Many official functions on Hemelder Aurek have been given over to the jurisdiction of the Republic's Bureau of Ships and Services.

Hemelder Aurek has few local laws - notably no laws regarding personal weapons - and no standing military. It does employ a robust police force, however, mainly tasked with keeping order in public places, and with enforcing aerospace traffic regulations. It boasts numerous interceptor starfighters and patrol ships, and a number of capital ships up to frigate class, including several heavily armed littoral defense monitors.

  • - CULTURE -

The culture of Hemelder Aurek is a diverse one. As a planet situated at a crossroads, beings from across the known Galaxy - and from the unknown parts, as well - have come to Hemelder Aurek either to settle or just passing through. As a result, the planet's population and and cultural landscape are extremely cosmopolitan, and it is difficult to pin down any part of it that is originally "from" Hemelder Aurek.

  • - SATELLITES -

Hemelder Aurek is a moon of the planet Hemelder, which is an ice giant orbiting the star Jolex. Hemelder is notable for having dozens of moons, several of them habitable, and most of these being host to settlements of some kind. Hemelder Aurek itself has no natural satellites aside from a few small asteroids, although it is orbited by hundreds of artificial ones, including numerous space stations, refueling depots, freight marshaling yards, communication satellites and sensor platforms.

- INTENT -

Hemelder Aurek is a unique setting - a planet-wide spaceport - which could be used for all sorts of fun role-playing. It is also intended as a major setting for commercial factions - shipping companies, that sot of thing - to utilize as a place for them to have facilities or even keep their headquarters. It also fills a spot I noticed on the standard Galactic map - the intersection of two hyperlanes - where there is no planet, and which I believe should have something.

@AutoFox I absolutely love your code, mind if I use it for my own planet application?
