Hello all,

I am new to the land of Free-form RP, but am an old hand at pen-and-paper games and have been a DM (D&D primarily, with some Star Wars D20 thrown in for kicks) for about 10 years. I tried FFRP close to 20 years ago in AOL chat rooms, but they were a mess and I had no idea what I was doing. This seems like a fun endeavor, and I thought I'd explore a little further.

A bit about the person behind the keyboard: I used to be in theatre, and was a costumer/stage manager. Getting paid work was an awful ordeal, so I switched gears, got another degree and am now a Children's Librarian for one of the biggest Public Library systems in the US. I do a number of awesome things at my job, one of which is running a gaming program in which I and another librarian teach/play with teens. We do several types of gaming, from MTG & Yu-Gi-Oh! (the teen's choice, not mine), to Munchkin, to D&D. We have grand dreams of one day playing something a bit more involved, like Carcassone or something, and to one day have the teens start their own RPG campaigns. But we're not there yet.

I've loved Star Wars for as long as I can remember. I've read many of the EU/Legends books and comics, in addition to watching most, if not all, of the movies and tv shows. I have always had a weakness for Jedi and scoundrels, thanks to Luke and Han. My favorite Jedi as a teen was Corran Horn, and have developed a fondness for Quinlan Voss in the newer material, though I admittedly do not know as much about him as the Rebellion/GA/NJO characters.

I do have one question before diving in, and it pertains to Character Creation. I have read the stickies, but I just want to clarify: are the specific guidelines to creating a character, a la D&D or SW D20? Or is it more narrative? Do I need to roll stats, or just describe his general abilities?

Many thanks!

May harmony find you,
Jasand

Who's harmony, and why do I want them to find me?

As for your character, you don't need to roll stats. I believe you just make the stats reasonable for a beginning character, and a brief description of their abilities would be ideal.

Welcome Jasand!

VT nailed the answer to your query. We're pretty lax about CP- just as long as the basic requirements (listed on our sticky) is covered, you're good to RP.

Interesting RL background, by and by.

Anything else? Post it here and or send me a PM.

~Cheers!

Fantastic! Thank you all! I guess one more query: when figuring out starting gear, or gear in general, for a character, we use the profiles in the Tech Profiles Board?

You can use any approved, non-archived tech, as long as your character would have reasonable access to it. Some people make items just for their character or just for a certain faction, so those would be off limits unless you contact those players directly, but others make more general use stuff as well. Despite it being 1023 ABY you can also use canon tech, provided it isn't anything that's banned. IIRC, it's mostly just stealth/cloaking tech that's restricted entirely, though the tech guidelines would have more info on that.

Another P&P player, eh? Always good to have more. We're a surprisingly rare breed here by all accounts. I never touched D20 Star Wars, but I've been enjoying the Fantasy Flight Games line of Star Wars RPGs. Worth giving them a look into if you're a fan of more narrative driven systems.

Anyhow, welcome aboard.

They're pretty neat. The system is a little... unconventional compared to the majority of PnPs, but once you get past the initial confusion the dice usually cause it's a simple system to run. It's reliant much more on you and your GM describing actions than a strict list of actions that you can, or cannot perform. For example, if Brian is trying to slice a door, the GM might toss in a difficulty dice because "Stormtroopers are shooting at him", and another because "it's a really tough one to crack.". It lacks much of the statistical crunch that I feel bogs down a lot of games in this day and age.

Oh, that's the one with the weird custom dice? I briefly looked at a review when picking games for our programs and decided against it, because we couldn't justify proprietary dice for the library's collection. But it sounded interesting for something at home. I'll look into it further!

Thanks! It is super cool! I just built a "life-sized" dragon head from paper and cloth mache and have it displayed. I justified it as decoration for Harry Potter's birthday party. But mostly I wanted to build a giant freaking dragon.
