So I'm looking to buy a decent gaming computer with a max budget of $700 (after tax). What are my options?

get one built :P the rig I got at cyberpower was under 650 and that includes a good video card, liquid cooling extra fans and a few upgrades...I'd seriously look there they often have massively good deals with free upgrades and likes and sometimes free shipping...perfect time of year IMHO Im sure they have something going because of the coming holidays.

CyberPower Z68 Configurator
Intel® Core™ i5-2500K Processor
8GB PC1600 RAM
NVIDIA GT520 1GB Video
MSI Z68 USB3 & SATA3 MB
OCZ 60GB SATA3 SSD

just in my budget.

hehe my computer looks like vader and glows blue ( trooper jr case) and it still bothers me that I cant hear it running ( because of the liquid cooling rather than junk fans) I went with the AMD Phenom™II cpu and AMD Radeon HD 6850 1GB GDDR5 gpu ( with the integrated chips added I have like a 2.7 gig video and can play pretty much everything out currently maxed.

liquid cooling, bluray player and a few free upgrades. Didn't get a moniter though because I was able to get a bigger, nicer one for 50 bucks less elsewhere.

I liked them. and when ordering they kept you informed on every step of it from order being received, though the warehouse to assembly the two quality control tests, when it shipped> with all tracking info> and when I had an issue they gave help swift and ended up sending me a few adapters out of the blue because they " thought they may have forgotten to send some 'which they didn't' ) and called to make sure I got it all set up and was content.

o_o; Huh... Am I too late to ask what'd make a kickass multimedia computer that plays games like Skyrim and such seamlessly, as well as videos and stuff? I'm not a tech-junkie @.@

At least an i5 processor (preferably i7), an nVidea video card, and lots of RAM.

I know sites like cyberpower are great for desktops, but are they as useful for someone looking to pick up a laptop?

Any clue where I can look for quality laptops (good for both gaming and mobility), or is cyberpower also the place to go for this?

Either an nVidia or AMD video card is necessary (integrated/on-board cards lack the power that a dedicated card has). From what I'm told, nVidia has strong performance and good driver updates, but the performance is somewhat unstable in relativity to AMD cards, which have solid cards but crappy driver updates. AMDs are cheaper though, I think. Which is better is more of personal preference.

i5/i7 is all good, but it's more about the processing power than the brand, imo: 3/4 GHz processors are really good (I think there are some 4GHz processors). Quadcores > Duocores: video games for PC are starting to delve into quadcore processing power, though it's unlikely that there will be PC games with a minimum requirement of a quadcore for a while. However, you can't go wrong with an i5 or an i7 processor at the current time.

Agreed that one can never have enough RAM in a comp, though 2GB is bare minimum for performance.

Worth it though.
