Sarnai sneezed as she walked through the darkness. Level 1312 wasn't usually this dark or this dank. Unfortunately, today was neither a normal day nor a good day for the detective. A massive pipeline had burst, raining down on tens of thousands of homes and businesses. Thankfully, automated droids created just for such emergencies quickly slapped a temporary seal on the pipeline, limiting damage. But an entire apartment block that had never been build against a sudden and torrential downpour of rain had been nearly flooded.

Specifically, Sarnai's apartment block had been flooded. Now, as droids and maintenance men alike worked to clean up the excess water before too much evaporated, the red headed woman was blessed with an extremely humid atmosphere in which to investigate a murder. Apparently killers couldn't leave anything well enough alone even during water emergencies. Groaning, she stopped outside of a small cafe and ordered a small cup of hot caf. The victim was some middling management worker that handled relations with the New Republic Navy recruiting office and and the officer academy. Apparently, he was the man who made the cuts in deciding who got to be an officer and who was sent to work on more menial positions.

Sarnai thanked the Devaronian man who handed her the caf, paying him before continuing her walk towards the crime site. Her mind already racing with possible suspects. A random attack was never out of the question, of course, as 1312 wasn't exactly a safe level to live on. But more likely a disgruntled cadet who didn't get the position he wanted would be the culprit. Speaking of cadets, a naval officer was to accompany Sarnai on this case as a consultant. The detective had not been briefed on who exactly would be joining her, but a safe assumption would be an officer of some sorts.

Police lights illuminated the street ahead of her, their blue and red flashing seen far before the droids and officers would come into view. The scene itself had been completely blocked off with large plasteel panels, obscuring views from any onlookers on the street. Flashing her badge at the first line of defense, a handful of officers keeping everyone else out of the cordoned off area, she was quietly let inside. Her curiosity at the strange silence of her comrades was quickly stifled as she entered the scene.

Her comrades and peers were often jovial types, making jokes even at the darkest times, but the starkly horrifying scene in front of Sarnai explained their sudden bout of somber attitude. The middle management worker, an officer of the navy himself by the name of Jureg Dun, had been mutilated and 'put on display' as some sort of sick art piece. Sarnai let out a deep sigh as she observed the site, reaching out and gently touching the man's lapel for but a moment before recoiling away. The sheer amount of pain, suffering, and darkness surrounding every item of this scene was intoxicating too much for Sarnai to handle with her abilities.

Another officer coughed behind her, attempting to get Sarnai's attention, "Ma'am, your, uh, consultant is outside. Do you want to go out and get her?"

Sarnai, flashing the man, Yesha Barouk, a confused look, responded perhaps a little too quickly and a little too sharply. "Go outside and greet her, Yesha? Allow her entrance inside! Whoever they are, they need to observe this scene with their own eyes." Yesha was a kind, older officer with a nice retirement around the corner, he didn't really deserve Sarnai's annoyance. However, the detective was having trouble keeping her usual composure. The other officers in the room and forensic workers turned away in an attempt to not exacerbate the situation.

With her vacation coming to an end, Ceris was back to work. If only she knew how boring the military was before she signed up. She imagined she would always be shooting bad guys, commanding ships, defending planets, and all sorts of crazy adventures. Unfortunately, 95% of the job was paperwork and yelling at people.

Ceris was ready to call it a day until one of her junior officers entered with another piece of paper. Ceris simply smiled as they entered, but she wanted to leap over her desk and smash their skull. "Captain, I think you might want to take a look at this..." they had a concerned look on their face. Ceris' smile wiped away as she took the paper and read over it. She quickly contacted the Fleet Admiral to let him know, "Huh?" he said over the line "Of course you fucking call me now when I'm about to go home. Handle it yourself!"

After a few more calls, Ceris was eventually sent to the lower levels of Coruscant. "It's just as filthy as the last time I was here..." she muttered walking through the dirty streets. She looked down at her datapad as she walked, reading over the portfolio of one 'Sarnai Sunstrider'. This detective was a rather strange person, and sources say she can be a little grumpy; nothing that Ceris couldn't handle.

Approaching the crime scene, Ceris was stopped by officers waiting outside. "Oh sorry, not use to this thing." She pulled out her military I.D. and the officers looked a bit confused. One of them, an older officer, went inside and came back after with a bit of a frown. "Sorry mis- I mean, Captain Odrosess." They probably weren't use to someone of her status being around these parts, Ceris decided to not take offense. "No worries sweet-heart." She smiled and gave him a pat on his shoulder before entering.

It was eerily quiet even though there were plenty of officers and forensics workers inside. It was a bit weird for Ceris to enter a building for work reasons without immediately being greeted and saluted. She also hated how gloomy the environment was; she knew it was a crime scene but it was still bothersome. Ceris laid her eyes upon the red haired detective and made her way over

"Ah you must be her. Detective Sarnai? Detective Sunstrider? or do you simply go by detective?" Before she even received a response, Ceris approached what remained of Officer Dun. She placed her hands behind her back and thoroughly observed his body with her eyes; her face had no shock to it, more so curiosity as if she were intrigued. Many of the nearby officers would look rather shocked at the Ceris' demeanor. The scenery didn't bother Ceris, especially after her trip to Cyborrea. She took a step back, looking at the man's face which had been torn off and sewed back on. "It's been awhile Officer Dun. Three years if I'm correct." She studied his face "I didn't know you lived in these lower levels."

Ceris gave the man a final salute before turning back around to face Sarnai. "Sorry about that detective. I'm not really use to these kinds of things. I'm Captain Odrosess, it is a pleasure to meet you, and hopefully I can help you solve this case." She would extend her hand out to Sarnai with a warm smile on her face.

Sarnai looked over the blonde woman who strode into her crime scene, pausing before responding as she was greeted, "Detective or Sarnai is fine, honorifics have never been a great concern of mine." Turning back to the body, Sarnai took the moment of silence to better examine her corpse. It would be these details that would most greatly assist her in this case, especially considering her more supernatural abilities were off the table.

The man's face had been cut off, removed entirely and carefully, before being sewn back on. More interesting than that, his plainclothes appeared to have been cut off in sections before being sewn back into his body in a mismatched manner vaguely resembling the pattern of a military officer's uniform. Afterward, multiple small appendages, fingers and toes, had been removed and reattached in the wrong areas. Finally, metal rods had been drive into his arms and legs in order to 'pose' him as if he were a statue honoring a significant figure.

Her mind may have been elsewhere, focused on the body before her, but she was not so dense as to not hear Captain Odrosess introduce herself. Nodding, Sarnai turned to her and responded with a rather uncharacteristically cold demeanor. "A pleasure to meet you, Captain, hopefully we will be able to unravel this mystery together." Turning away, Sarnai faced towards the exit in order to clear her mind and speculate aloud, "There are as many cameras on Coruscant as there are citizens, if not more. To pose this corpse in such a public place as this without being spotted would be incredibly difficult. Either our killer has access to floating camera patrol routes, or they visit this place enough to be known as a regular by the locals. Regardless, the local shopkeepers should have seen something."

Blinking, Sarnai turned to Odrosess and smiled, "Apologies, I did not intend to ramble. You mentioned you knew the victim? Would you possess knowledge of any enemies he may have made? Or, perhaps, activists willing to go to intense lengths to send a message?"

Ceris was a bit disappointed in the detective's cold response, but she assumed people who stay around the lower levels for a long time end up this way. Listening closely to Sarnai's rambling, Ceris formed a hypothesis after Sarnai mentioned the killer could be known as a regular. Ceris decided to keep her idea to herself for now, as she wanted to see how the detective performed.

"Oh apologies accepted, detective," she paused "and it is nice to see that another person is capable of smiling in this room." It was a slight diss to the other officers and forensics workers, but it was more so to have them believe it was ok to lighten up. Ceris was all about making people feel slightly uncomfortable; it was the easiest way to control them.

With her arms still resting behind her back, Ceris continued on "I'll go through your many questions in order. Yes, I know, well it is knew now, the victim. Officer Dun was the man who accepted me into the officer academy, as he did so with many others; I do not know much about him outside of my brief ten to twenty minute conversation I had with him back then." Ceris held up two fingers as to indicate she was moving to the next of Sarnai's questions "I do not believe he would have formed any enemies simply by denying people to the officer academy. There were many people that were upset that they weren't accepted, but most usually got over it quickly. Especially since the decision is mostly determined by tests taken prior; Officer Dun did have some say in it, but he couldn't just deny people with great scores." Ceris then held up three fingers "As for activists, it seems to be a low probability. According to surveys, most people, at least on Coruscant, are fine with the New Republic Defense Force; the bits of hatred here and there is usually tailored toward Chancellor Emil and Grand Admiral Brum. I do not think killing an old officer, who was nearing retirement, is really a message to either of those two."

Placing her hand back behind her back, Ceris turned her head to get a glance at the corpse. She quickly turned her head back around with a smile "It seems like the killer went a little overboard don'tcha think?" Ceris placed her hand by her own head and rested her cheek on it, with a childish and overexpressive 'curious' face. "I wonder why that is?" Her tone was childish as well; Ceris was mocking the detective a bit. All though they were to be working together, Ceris wanted to turn this into a bit of a game. She wanted to see who could uncover the mystery first. However she wouldn't be too upfront as to not work with the detective at all.

Sarnai listened carefully to the Captain as she spoke, studying her face. There was a strong indication of the innate training to view everyone as a suspect in the detective's mind. However, Odrosess's expressions and body language conveyed nothing but innocence. Sarnai's own emotions did not display on her face as she listened, instead opting to keep a sly smile playing across her face.

"It seems like the killer went a little overboard don'tcha think? I wonder why that is?" Sarnai crooked her head and continued to smile at the Captain's tonal change. Did she intend to mock the killer? The corpse? Or the Detective? All of the above? The redhead only nodded in response, taking a look at the corpse again herself. "Overboard? Maybe. All this macabre decorum has been performed postmortem, looks more akin to art than torture." Though torture was definitively involved in the man's death, but she couldn't mention that yet. It didn't show over the sewn in clothes, forensics would need to make that 'discovery' first.

Sighing and stretching her arms, Sarnai looked back over at Odrosess and remarked lightheartedly, "Well! No sense in wasting our time with the deceased! Shall we take to the main street? Someone always observes something." It wasn't really a question, Sarnai was already headed towards the exit as she finished speaking. Looking to Officer Barouk as she stepped out, Sarnai spoke to him, "We will be conducting interviews, have your men take statements from anyone coming forth as an onlooker."

Yesha Barouk nodded and moved away from the pair, letting Sarnai start her stroll down the street back towards the cafe where she picked up her drink earlier. The moment the pair were out of earshot of the other officers, Sarnai would pose a question to the naval captain. "So, which is it? A new serial killer with the money, time, and intense lack of a creative outlet? Or a hired killer sending us on a wild goose chase?"

Ceris could sense that the detective what not one of a stable mind, as Ceris herself was not one either. The sly smile across the detective's face reminded Ceris of her own wicked smile whenever she was excited. Anyone that could put on a smile in such a situation, without the help of another, was not a normal person.

"Art huh?" she thought. Ceris couldn't see what about the body was representational of art. Art typically sent a message, but the message here seemed nonexistent.

In response to Sarnai's remarks, Ceris smiled "Sounds good to me!" and promptly followed the detective out of the building. The older officer before seemed to know Sarnai well, and vice versa. Ceris assumed they frequently work with one another on the same level. She followed the detective down the street, and was a bit confused at the questions given. "Well, a serial killer implies that this was not the only murder committed by the same person. Unless you know something I don't." Ceris didn't rule out the detective from the equation entirely. It wasn't completely illogical to think that a crazed detective would commit murders and get others to try and 'solve' the case with them.

"As for a hired killer" she continued "I don't see why a hired killer would want to put us on a wild goose chase. This murder seemed very personal. I thought you would catch on earlier, but I was thinking it could be a relative of some sorts. It could explain why no one saw a suspicious person, and there could be plenty of reasons why a relative might do so."

Down the road was a line at a coffee shop. Ceris noticed it shared the same logo as the cup Sarnai was drinking from. "Any reason why we are going to a cafe? Don't tell me you have a coffee addiction." Ceris couldn't get behind the taste of coffee; she was more of a tea aficionado.
