There are good dubs, like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun for instance - but most are bad. I feel like anime loses some of feel when it's in english too, i dont know why.

To be honest, it's mostly because I don't care for subtitles and just prefer hearing the dialogue in English. I tend to get too focused on the anime itself to really notice or care if a dub is bad or not. Though Gurren Lagann's was excellent in my opinion. Kyle Hebert as Kamina kept making me think of Son Gohan as Great Saiyaman, which just brought the cheesiest of grins to my face.

I've heard most arguments on dub v. dub (because it is honestly a misnomer to call the Japanese a sub). It's largely personal preference, but I never understood the notion to completely sit in one camp and completely ignore the other.

As far as Japanese dubs go their strengths are in the jokes and Japanese terminology not being localized which can cause a few of the English variants to fall flat. The Monogatari series and Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensai pretty much NEEDS to be watched in Japanese with subtitles because all of the humor is based on quick banter based around kanji deconstruction.

But, let's be honest, if you can't enjoy a story because every other noun isn't followed by -kun or -chan then I judge your character as a whole as you snuggle up to your Haruhi body pillow. If they are in Japan shouldn't they be speaking Japanese? Sure, but that argument doesn't always hold though I do ****ing love when Japanese dubs throw in gratuitous English.

Japanese dub also artificially feels more emotional as you can't particularly judge performances which can be nice as I find myself less annoyed, and by extension, less familiar with certain Japanese VAs.

English on the other hand we can be far more critical over. I personally try to not watch shows that have actors I dislike (Greg ****ing Ayers) in them. I am sure he is a delightful man, but his voice grates on me. The other side of the coin is I find it easier to pick out English actors and have watched at least a couple more episodes of a show I would normally have not because they are in it.

It also helps that if your eyes aren't mostly glued to the bottom third of the screen (while it isn't tunnel vision it certainly does zone your eyes) watching in English lets you actually watch the animation a lot more closely. Like I said it's not like the rest of the screen is in a blind spot, but the visual economy in scenes with dialogue is of course spent at the bottom. Not a huge problem in action heavy shows as it is normally just shouts and grunts while lasers and stuff shoot about, but the majority of the shows I watch have more character work.

Long summation? Watch both honestly. I normally watch anime as it comes out so I am mostly stuck with Japanese dubs (though the rare case of Space Dandy and Funimation who are putting out English productions very fast now). If I like the show I view the English version as a chance to rewatch and get different takes on the show. Sometimes dubs handle characters slightly different and I actually do prefer characters in one dub as opposed to another.

I normally watch English while I am doing something else, having the show half-windowed or to the side as I play a game or type, or simply if I just don't feel like reading. Japanese dub I need to get more invested in simply because I lose detail if I look away so I normally limit that to the shows I am keeping up with seasonally.

Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
Black Lagoon
Banner of the Stars

Attack on Titan would've been one too, but I 'still' prefer the Manga. Even though they did well on the anime adaption.

Have you watched Jormungand? It's very reminiscent of Lagoon.

I've started both of those and not gotten around to finishing either one, in your opinion, which would be better to watch? Know your question wasn't directed at me but I've got that bout of insatiable curiosity.

Both are good in their own right. I personally preferred Jormungand.

Jormungand? Yeah, I watched it. And it did indeed remind me of Black Lagoon to a certain extent.

I watched Pyschopass, at least the first episode, and I am already hooked on to the series. It certainly is very interesting.

Oh!

Sword Art Online Abridged
Dragon Ball Z Abridged
Hellsing Abridged

^^ These are all gold. SAO Abridged is utterly hilarious and honestly more entertaining than SAO itself imho.

@Black Noise -- I loved Tokyo Ghoul's first season, but season two has been falling flat for me.

Gurren Lagann is the ultimate source of motivational phrases. To hell with the motivational posters in HR and Counselor offices with mountains and rowing teams; just put up Kamina quotes and anyone who reads them will immediately have the will and strength to pierce the Heavens.

Psycho-Pass has a second season, but it overall isn't as good as season one. Also, beware of the disturbing scenes: I usually don't get put off by "disturbing scenes" ratings, but Psycho-Pass managed to make me feel the bile in my throat.

Yeah I watched the first season of Pyscho pass. Other than the disturbing scenes, I think it was a very good season. Probably one of the best anime I have watched. I am planning on watching the second season very soon.

I'm currently watching Shirobako, among others. I strongly recommend Shirobako, which is a slice of life styled show about the anime industry. Self-proclaimed people in the industry have said that this anime is quite representative of the kinds of things that production studios have to go through in order to produce anime and, from what I've seen, I can believe that.

I finished watching Attack on Titan the other week, and I was blown away by how much I liked it. It was good.
