Capital: Seoul
Government: Federal Republic.
Head of State: President—Lee Dae-Hyun.
Population: 49,852,156.
Economy: Widely known as the “Miracle on the Han”, South Korea is often looked at as the seminal example of stunning economic growth in a once less-developed country. Emerging from the shadow of Japanese colonialism in the 1940’s, South Korea’s economy has been characterized by heavily industrialized exports, development of high-technology, and importation of raw material. Recent difficulties have been brought on by the expanding need and cost for fuel resources and has spurred heavy investment in the renewable energy sector.
History:
Military:
Thanks to the threat of their northern cousins, hovering just above the 38th Parallel, South Korea has always maintained an impressive military. Among the top-ten largest in the world, and certainly one of the most efficiently maintained, well-equipped, and expertly trained.
Active Troops: 712,000.
Reservists:: 4,800,000—given the constant threat of invasion by North Korea, South Korea maintains one of the world’s largest reserve force. The majority of these, however, are not professional soldiers, nor even “weekend warriors”, but ex-military personal and civilians with additional military training tasked to local defense, air-raid enforcers, disaster restoration, and search and rescue operations.
Republic of Korea Army:
-Active Personnel: 580,000.
-Tanks: 2,342.
• K1 / K1A1 and Variants: 1602.
• K2 “Black Panther”: 740.
-Infantry Fighting Vehicles: 2800
• K200: 1900
• K21: 900
[Obviously a WIP. I'll hammer out the history over the weekend.]
