DESCRIPTION

"Just once, I'd like to destroy a starship we didn't pay for!"
_Imperial admiral.

The EF76 Nebulon-B frigate is a capital ship manufactured by the venerable Kuat Drive Yards. Originally designed in the Imperial era, the Nebulon-B occupied an important niche in the Imperial fleet ecosystem, serving as a multi-role "generalist" which could be used for everything from transport duty to escort to long-range independent patrol. Nebulon-Bs, though less recognizable than the Empire's dagger-shaped star destroyers, were arguably much more important; minor systems which were deemed not to warrant the attention of an ISD were often patrolled by such frigates. As the Empire was largely composed of such small, unimportant systems, Nebulon-Bs were in widespread use during the reign of the Empire.

The Nebulon-B is a more or less typical frigate, armed with a mix of medium turbolasers, anti-starfighter laser turrets and a torpedo launcher, as well as a pair of tractor beams for snaring smaller vessels attempting to escape it. Minimum crew is 150 personnel, although this is not enough to man weapons or perform any other combat functions, which requires the full complement of 850. Up to 700 passengers can also be carried, as well as up to 6,000 tons of cargo and consumables sufficient for up to 2 years in space. Notably, the ship can carry a full squadron of starfighters or light starbombers, as well as up to 4 shuttles or similarly sized craft. Up to 8 additional craft can be docked externally.

Of course, the Nebulon-B did get its claim to fame, and not in service to the Empire. Being as numerous and useful as they were, Nebulon-Bs were a popular target for theft by organizations such as the Alliance to Restore the Republic, which acquired large numbers of these frigates by various means. Nebulon-Bs in Rebel service proved to be some of the most highly decorated ships in their fleet, with one in particular, the Redemption, serving as a temporary headquarters for the Alliance high command after the Battle of Hoth. Nebulon-Bs continued in Rebel service up through the Battle of Jakku, after which they passed into New Republic inventory.

Despite their now advanced age, many Nebulon-Bs remain in service. Various sector navies and local planetary defense forces rely on these craft as the backbone of their fleets, with many examples serving in more or less the same roles now as they did a century and a half ago. They can, of course, also be found in the inventories of mercenaries, pirates and even some ambitious smugglers.

LEGALITY
