''Business is life. Life is business. Two views that seem similar, but are so vastly different. Those who subscribe to the first view toil all their lives, wasting it on the work they think will lead them to success. Before they realise, they are a shell of a person, a puppet for others. Those who subscribe to the second view are those that live their lives like the proverbial entrepreneur. They take risks to see great gains, they manipulate the people around them to rise the social scale, gaining and shedding 'friends' like work colleagues and business partners. A far trickier route for a person to take. I myself, as you can see by my position, and this office you find yourself in, have taken that second route. And I have succeeded.''
Senator Donald Barrington is the representative of Caridia to the republic. He has been representing his people for over a decade, a businesslike air always surrounding him. One of the sharpest minds in the senate, he was the second son of the Chief Executive officer of an multi-system company. As second son, it was not Don's place to go to war. His Brother was committed to the Republic Navy, where he became a respectable Captain. Donald's achievments outstripped his brother. He was raised for business from a young age, his father taking an authoritarian route to his extra-curricular activities. He partook in team and single sports, his father instilling a love for competition into the boy.
After his Primary and secondary schooling, he studied Business Law, becoming a legal representative for the company. He often brushed with politicians as the company grew larger and larger, embroiling himself in the world of politics.
At the age of thirty five, Donald received news of the death of the previous senator of Caridia, opening the spot. He ran for the position, his business and legal expertise leaving the other candidates in the dust.
As a senator, he was very prominent, gathering contacts, sizing up possible allies and opponents, all before stepping into the senate itself. There, his distaste for the Mohatu administration was known. He commonly sought for reform, for streamlining the ramshackle organisation of the republic, trying to use the laws to get his way, cut-throat, ruthless, boiling everything down into simple laws of business.
And with business, comes money. Many say Barrington is addicted to pleasure. These people are fools. Barrington loves his money more than any fragrant lady of the night. He has a thrill in accumulating it, be it through gambling or more...under the table means. Every man's life has a price. Barrington's does like any man, albeit a high one.
Under the new administration, Barrington was pleased to see what he had been working towards, a streamlining. Far better. More businesslike.
