Dogfighting PvP tips

Lets get this out of the way first:

We all know nobody likes dogfighting. Piloting ships, in the middle of space or otherwise where almost certain death can come from being hit just once, during a firefight where most of it is just flying, and then shooting, before making some convoluted maneuver out of the way of someone else shooting and then repeating the process, seems boring and over complicated to most people.

I, however, believe the major reason people dislike dogfighting is not because it is innately bad PvP but simply because not many people know how to do it effectively in the first place (myself included), they can be quite fast paced and interesting if done correctly. The question is how.

The purpose of this thread is for any starship savvy RPers out there with experience in this field to give their advice, tips, and general insights on how to effectively set up and perform well I a dogfighting thread. ​

I'd just like to pop in and show this absolutely amazing overview of space combat in general written by @Korvo, Operations and Stratagems of Naval Warfare Methodology.

Specifically (since it is quite long), I'd point people to the Universal and Special Tactics under the Starfighter Tactics section. It helped me immensely when I did my very first dogfighting battle in the Battle of Felucia.

I have read through most of that and it is pretty helpful. One thing I found seemed to be missing from that particular guide is how to actually POST effectively in dogfighting threads. Korvo did an amazing job of outlining every single IC perspective, but when someone like me reads it and still doesn't understand half of what is being said it is still quite confusing when trying to get the mechanics of dogfighting down.

Like, seriously, I don't even know what terminology to use when writing about flying a starfighter except for things like "pushing buttons" and "alarms going off", etc.

In flight school (for the US Navy at least), pilots learn how to preform different rolls (like barrel and lag rolls) as basic maneuvers.

Step 3: Pack a lunch. Crash rescue takes forever. :p
