Bounty hunting was something that he was getting used to but the jungle was new and the jungle was something he was very much not okay with - the damn place was hot and sticky and he just generally disliked being in it. The fact that they were supposed to be tracking a runaway through the damned jungle was almost enough to make him decide that the bounty wasn't actually worth it after all so he could leave.

But their target deserved to die.

The target of this bounty was an infamous child trafficker who was hiding on Jakku because he had attempted to sell the child of a Hutt. When you attempt to sell the child of a Hutt, you tended to move off the grid he supposed but that didn't seem to have helped the guy at all considering here they were tracking him through the undergrowth.

On the plus side, he had worked with Horus on another bounty - another bounty who had deserved to die actually. This was becoming a bit of a trend he could tell already. But so long as the targets continued to be the kind who deserved to die?

Well he was fine with that.

Likewise, he had worked with Ner on a bounty before this one as well and was more than happy enough to work with her. The woman was a professional, even if she did have something of an amusing temperament as well.

"Damned jungle... you have any experience in tracking through this kind of stuff?" he asked his allies over their com channel, cutting through some of the dense foliage with his lightsaber, which was so easy it was probably cheating he would admit, "I haven't used my tracking skills in years..."

Since the academy had had an open day on the topic come to think of it.

"Remember - no need to pull punches on this one."

The Hutt father just wanted the man's head after all and Castor did not blame the father at all.

There was one thing Horus could never truly accept, and that was the concept of dealing death. It was almost ingrained in his very being that killing should be a last resort. It might surprise most to know this about him since he was usually pretty good at fighting in general, but his tactics were almost always nonlethal. However, under these circumstances - that of a child slaver - it took him all the training he'd received in the last few months to calm the fire in his heart. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, he loathed the idea of someone kidnapping children and ransoming them for any sum of credits, no matter how few or many. This could have been his little sister, his brother, any of the countless siblings of his allies taken by a beast of a being in the night. Horus would make an exception for this mission, holstering his blaster pistol to his side after changing it from stun to kill. Trudging through undergrowth wasn't new to him, but tracking was. He would have to rely on the Force more often than usual during this mission.

"Not through the jungles, no, but I know the basics. If I can get a read on how he feels through the Force, he's as good as ours, however."

He observed the lightsaber casually, slightly wishing for one of his own. He'd retrieved his crystal recently and bonded with it, a brilliant and shining green that signified his strong connection to the mystical bindings of the universe. He ducked under a stray branch and continued on, following behind Castor as he led the way. It was understandable that the father of a young Huttling that was nearly trafficked would want the person in question who did the deed dead. Horus would likely have done the same had their situations been reversed, even his training would not have prevented the rage from losing a child could cause. If it was anything like losing parents, he understood the grief well. It was true however that he and Castor had worked together on a previous assignment, and unlike some of the other members of the Alliance, the Vahla couldn't have cared less about the human's past. It was he who had advocated for another turncoat, after all, and they had finally chosen the right side in the end.

"Don't worry. I don't make a habit of pulling punches for scum like this. I won't lie - I hate killing. But like last time, this is a special exception."

Jungles were not a new thing for Ner’Giza, at least in terms of what not to wear. Her mission to Naboo had taught her that gearing up for heavy combat in her usual style was pretty frakken dumb. It was a wonder she hadn’t expired from heat exhaustion or sank into a bog under the weight off all that gear. What was new to her was the Jedi being real. That revelation had been a terrible blow to the woman hitting her in the heart of everything she knew to be real and stable. She couldn’t think about Aurelian though and decided to just ignore it in the hopes the situation would just resolve itself. She had been through numerous betrayals in her life, all of them from her own family and supposed this was minor when it came to the bulk of her existence. Trust was something she gave again and again despite all evidence to the foolishness of the mindset. Still, just once she had hoped it might have been given in return.

At any rate she decided she would never let him see, never shit all over his life that way by making the culmination of his dreams about her. She couldn’t be that selfish, not with him. Aurel needed this and she felt it was a gift of the force to make all his sacrifices have meaning. By the nameless goddess she hoped that was how it worked. She didn’t really know if death could have meaning. More telling was the shame she felt for having kept her own secrets. But how could she tell him what her family had done? Nera didn’t want to be from people who could do such things. She didn’t want to see the look of sympathy in his eyes either once she told him the truth...No. She would keep her secrets, she would close her heart on that chapter forever.

She swatted a flying bug from her face and chided herself to dry it up already. Life was like that and there was no sense in making a frakken drama out of everything. Burying her heart yet again, it was surprising just how effectively cold she felt despite the heat of the jungle in which they trekked. That she could direct this coldness toward the hunt for a child slaver? Well, perhaps the force did grant wishes after all.

Listening to the men talk she had to sigh. It seemed everyone was a Jedi these days. Well what she lacked in force sensibility she more than made up for in practical skills. She happened to be an excellent tracker. Her Uncle Taln’erca had trained her well as a hunter and today she had brought her Lyaer’tsa with her. Having left her armour back on the Tempest Hunter, she was clad in long sleeved shirt, her dueling gloves, and trousers that tucked down into knee high boots. Her head and lekku were wrapped in cloth as well to minimize the area of skin exposed to the biting stinging insects of the jungle. Admittedly the fabric was quite thin to avoid overheating, but as yet that didn’t seem to be much of an issue to her. She never did acclimatize to Hoth and preferred the blistering heat to the biting cold. Her blasters pistols, a DH-7 and an R5, were strapped to her waist for she would have felt naked without them.

She sighed seeing Castor hack and slash at everything in their path and decided it was time to speak up. Tracking wouldn’t do them much good if he continued to erase all sign before they could even view it. ”Might I suggest climbing a tree and getting a look for signs of the undergrowth being trampled by a man on a speedster?”

So Tempest wanted to try and track a living being through the Force - that wasn't as far fetched as some would believe under certain circumstances. It was, however, laughable to think that the padawan would have the fine control required to seek out, identify and track a single lifeform through the writhing mass of life and emotion that was the jungle. Every square foot of ground had hundreds of forms of life and at least a dozen of those were capable of some form of basic emotion.

He was not as hopeful as Horus.

"I doubt we'll be able to track a life or emotion through all this white noise." he admitted with a small sigh, "I think we might need to do this the old fashioned way... I think you might have a point Ner."

Their target wasn't a woodsman by any stretch of the imagination and there was doubtlessly going to be issues he encountered. He gestured for Ner to come closer and held his hands out, linked together, in front of him.

"Step on and I'll boost you up with the Force to the branches." he told her, glancing at Horus, "Jump up a different tree and check east and north - Ner, can you check west and south when you're up there?"

Thankfully the local wildlife seemed to be keeping itself to itself at this point so he would be able to assist Ner up to the branches without issue but jumping up himself.

Castor was right. Though he had a natural empathy, and on a smaller scale he might've been able to track the Imperial through the Force, but apparently his meditation into ego-death had slightly altered his view of the Force as he now sought to rely on it at all times. In moments like this, when the plant life itself would have caused an issue as a giant glow of life in the eyes of the Force, he could not perform such a specific task. He sensed some form of apprehension from the Twi'lek, something that caused him to raise an eyebrow temporarily before returning it to it's default state. Horus was in agreement that they would need to do this the old fashioned way, something he'd only dabbled with occasionally and wasn't even close to a practitioner of it.

"You're right, I don't know what I was thinking. Alrighty then, we'll have to find them through tracking, in which case it's up to you Ner. Boosting her up? Good, I'll see if I can find something suitable to the task."

Horus looked around, through the small of the foliage, trying to find a decent sized tree to jump up that was centered around the Northeast. It took him about a minute of walking away from the main group to spot a decently sized acacia that shot into the sky, the branches gently dancing in the light breeze. Horus groaned internally before bending his knees and shooting to the first branch, pulling himself up before climbing onto the next, and then the following one, until he reached the top of the tree. He looked, peered, and searched through the Force towards the North, and then the east. He found absolutely no signs to the North, but to the east it seemed some of the foliage was bent in. A closer look made it evident that it had the vague size of a speeder, and could have been their target. Ner would need to take a look to confirm, but he'd yell down to them regardless.

"Absolutely nothing to the North... wait... there seems to be some sort of foliage bent in to the east! Mind taking a look? I'll join in a moment."

The Force? Her head turned to look at Castor a bit wide-eyed, before she swallowed and nodded her head in agreement. She pressed a button on the shaft of her weapon and the handle retracted up to economy size, then she secured the spearhead in it’s sheath upon her back. It was secured in place with a small harness worn over her shoulders and two straps that encircled her torso like belts, one above her breasts and the other lower down across her diaphragm. ”how about a running jump?”, she said before taking off at a sprint toward the man.

She didn’t want time to think about the Force and all the drama it contained and at such times when she wished to avoid certain issues physical activity was her go to solution. Usually it involved tormenting Aurel with spear practice but then that was….

Her left foot pushed off from the ground while she aimed her right for Castor’s impromptu step stool and she vaulted up into the air catching hold of a branch and pulling herself up so that she might stand. Already she was feeling better and had to restrain herself to keep from whoopin. There was no sense in setting the denizens of the jungle into flight or hunter mode at the sound of a shrieking Twi’lek in the trees!

Turning round, she waved to Castor on the ground, then began her climb upward. When she reached the mid range beneath the canopy she gasped taken in by how clear the jungle was from up here. She cued the comm link and said, ”Castor. You gotta see this. It’s much clearer in the trees than down on the ground.” With a bit of running and jumping and maybe even a touch of the Force she thought she might have found a viable road through the jungle.

Mindful that she needed to check the western and southerly directions, she flicked her comm to pull up a compass app and turned in the appropriate cardinals. Neither direction showed anything but pristine jungle in the undergrowth but to the west there was some darkness she could barely glimpse. ”I’m going up above the canopy for a second look but so far I’ve got nothing”, she said via their comm before moving to the trunk and making her climb to breach the canopy.

On her way up, reaching for overhead branches, pushing off with her feet and making small leaps when the distance was too far, she heard Horus talk about maybe something to the east. She would have to wait until she reached the top to respond and when she did she gasped at the sight of winged insects with brightly colored wings fluttering by. She had to grin though when she realized what the darkness had been. Pressing her comm she said, ”To the west is a river. I’ll have to come back down from the canopy to double check the east, Horus. Won’t be but a moment.”

Ducking back down beneath the roof she found a vine and began to climb down to the larger branches of the mid region.

Launching Ner up was a piece of cake with the power of the Force and Castor quickly followed her up into the branches of the tree with a Force-assisted jump. Upon reaching the branches, he would admit that he could see what both Ner and Horus were talking about. They were both right - a river to the west and some disturbances in the undergrowth to the east.

Well it seemed that they were off to the east then didn't it?

"Good catch Horus." he told the other Rebel before taking a deep breath, "Looks like Ner is already getting a running start on us... we can't let her get there first can we? I think there's something in the rulebook about not letting regular rebels outpace us as Jedi..."

A joke but they could all do with lightening the mood and keeping it light.

Castor decided that he was going to travel like a Jedi and began to make leaps between the trees using the force to assist him. He was rather stealthy and he was picking up a decent amount of speed. He turned to joke with the others and that was a mistake as his foot slipped and he bashed his forehead against a branch he hadn't seen - he barely managed to catch himself before he fell.

"I'm not gonna hear the end of this one..."

"I mean, it's not a competition. But between us... we should probably hurry it up!"

Horus didn't bother to hop from tree to tree, instead he simply hopped down from his position and curled into a roll, landing with a soft thud. Luckily, he'd chosen an action that wasn't particularly difficult, gently jogging up to Ner as Castor made his way. Horus wondered what the other man was doing for a moment, before looking back and seeing him hop from tree to tree cinematically. That was until he nearly fell, managing to grab a branch before hitting the ground completely. Horus shook his head, chuckling. Yes, they Jedi where really a talented bunch of hooligans. Waving the man onward, he considered helping him up but would allow him to nurse his ego after such a fall. It was something Horus had learned early on in one of his missions; Keeping it simple was the best way to success. He had attempted parkour once and smashed his kneecaps against a durasteel crate. Tycho still didn't let him live that down.

"No, no you're not. Gonna file that under 'Castor's Bad Day'. I'm sure Eldrin Reach will be pleased to hear it!"

By the time he reached Ner, she would likely have arrived at the tracks. He stood in wait for her verdict, breathing in the fresh air as they waited. He thought back on why Castor was trying to be stealthy. There was nobody nearby to even see them, let alone cause trouble. It was they who were tracking prey, after all, hunter to hunted. His limp had subsided after the trials, one that was delivered to him by the Force itself through a barrage of lightning. He would never forget that failure and was devoted to learning the fine art of energy manipulation for the sake of the Order. Surely there was a way to possess the power without falling to the Darkness. The reeds and undergrowth that surrounded him were flattened in a logical fashion, almost completely. He was no tracker by any means, that was a title only his twin owned in the family, but it did seem to indicate there had been a speeder. It seemed his view from the trees had been correct.

Ner’Giza raced along the tree branches; certainly Castor’s force enhanced movements kept him in the lead though she managed not to lose sight of the man. That was until he hit his head on a low hanging branch and fell completely out of sight to the jungle floor below. Even before she made it to the place where he had gone down she heard his voice and that of Horus down below taking off a bit of the edge from the concern she had for his welfare. She grinned down at the men shaking her head before grabbing hold of a vine and sliding down its length to join them. Her form turned in a slight corkscrew motion before lighting upon the ground with little to no effort employed.

Grinning from ear to ear she put her hands on her hips and said, ”Of course some well placed bribes might keep our mouths shut. I like exotic fruits and wines, how about you Horus?” It was all about the food as far as Nera was concerned. She turned to grin at Horus before walking off to get a close up investigation of the kidnapper’s trail. She hoped it was the man they sought for who had sped through the jungle for she had no doubt it had been a speeder that lopped off the underbrush above the ground without disturbing the soil as a flying transport would do.

Her eyes were caught by a larger section that went clear to the ground as though the speedster had taken a moment to land. There were deep boot tracks sunk down into the ground, some already filled with muddy water that had as yet had time to settle out to clear water. ”Hey guys”, she called out as she followed the boot marks, ”The silt in these muddy tracks has not had time to settle. I’d say this trails was made within the last hour or so…”, her words ended abruptly as she heard a distinctive clicking noise as she set her foot down upon the ground.

She had heard the sound before and it filled her heart with terror. Calling out being very careful to keep her balance by throwing her arms out to her sides she said ”Don’t come any closer. I’ve stepped on a land mine.” Son of a karken wet nursing three eyed ferrydiddle with ranchor nipples!!!! Who bothered to stop and booby trap their back trail like this? Someone smart enough to know just how big a deal it was to steal a child of the Hutt. Her mind was racing at the speed of light as she wondered just how many the kidnapper had bothered to set. Seemed like play time was over.

Dropping down to the forest floor with grace he wished he had possessed moments before, he gave both of the others dirty looks before rolling his eyes, a reluctant smile tugging at his face. Thankfully his face was only smarting a little bit. He shook his head in exasperation.

"You two are the worst." he joked lightly, "True credit to the cause, the both of you."

And then things went... wrong.

There was absolutely no humor left in the atmosphere now. They were getting close to the kidnapper and that was fine but gods be damned, a land mine? He took a deep breath before gesturing to Horus.

"Get some elevation or swing round wide - keep up the chase." he told the other man before turning back to Ner, "It's alright. Just don't move - I'm coming to get you."

Castor picked his way through the undergrowth towards Ner cautiously, making sure to avoid some other land mines as he went. It took a moment but he soon reached his fellow rebel's side. He placed a hand on her foot, keeping it pinned to the land mine. His other hand patted her thigh.

"It's alright - you're going to be fine. It's an Imperial model."

And thank the Force for that.

Taking a deep breath, Castor used both hands to excavate the dirt and debris around the land mine, exposing it's sides. Wrapping his hands around the land mine, he began to pull on the Force and guide it. The mine began to get colder and colder as Castor used the Force to bring it closer and closer to freezing.

"Move your foot."

Once Ner had removed her foot, he would continue to pour cold into the mine, specifically freezing the trigger solidly in place so that it wouldn't register as the pressure having been taken off. When he had completed blocked it in place with ice, having frozen the mine solid, he let the mine drop to the ground and led the way through the small mine field for himself and Ner so that he wouldn't have to do that again.

She was vaguely aware of Castor sending Tempest away, the humor of the man and her ship sharing the name suddenly hitting her and threatened to make her very jiggly all over. She wanted to tell Castor to save himself, to drink one for her in some cantina on some nameless world, she wanted to piss herself too but did none of those things. Humor wouldn’t save her now and was threatening to undo her in the worst possible way if she didn’t hold still.

Each and every snap of the grasses beneath his approaching form caused her to grit her teeth certain that at any moment the next thing she heard would be the explosion that obliterated them both. The touch of his hand on her foot nearly made her jump out of her skin but she managed to keep it together, at least in the physical sense, her thigh barely twitching as his hand patted at her like one would a skittish rycrit. Her internal monologue had no such restraint and she started blathering a parsec a minute.

”Oh lucky me, it’s only an Imperial model landmine. No problem, no sweat. I’ll be fine. It’s just Sith-light, you know? Not top of the line Darth ‘gonna eat your mother’ Vrael type Sith. …” She blinked and looked down at him, what did he say, move your foot? ”... Oh!” she muttered meekly and removed her foot from the mine.

She was still very much conscious that there were probably more in the area and she looked to Castor. ”Uhm, I think I’ll just let you lead me back the way you came in, if that is alright with you.”, she laughed softly and raised her hand to rub at the back of her neck. ”Imperial surplus...heh.”, she sniffed looking up to him at last in chagrin. Her lack of caution in detecting the land mine had nearly gotten them both killed.

His blood ran slightly cold as he heard the metallic click of the mine. He would have used the Force to launch Ner away from the blast zone, but it seemed Castor had another plan entirely. Shaking his head slightly, he muttered a prayer under his breath and nodded as he was told to continue on without them. Taking up a jogging pace, he began to follow along with the signs of the speeder tracks, keeping up his speed but remaining vigilant against anything that might give him away. He continued for a short amount of time, silently hoping for a vehicle of his own as he trudged through the undergrowth. He couldn't find anything that would notify him where their target had gone, beyond more and more tracks that seemed to carry on forever. Horus turned back around and gently sighed, carrying on slightly as he anticipated his allies arrival.

It would be pointless for him to continue until he found the target on his own, but yet he continued. At this point, he was likely some ways away from his partners, and yet he continued. Though the tracks appeared the same, and though the underbrush barely changed in appearance, he carried on. It wasn't until he saw the faint outlines of a parked speeder next to something that could be barely described as a camp came into view. Gently drawing his vibrosword, he paused and kneeled down. Raising his commlink to his mouth, he silently activated the device. If this was an encampment for just the target, they were in luck. If this was a temporary stop, they didn't have very long until he left and carried on. It would be in their best interests to join up and prepare to take him down. Horus could perform the takedown alone, but he knew that the chances of failure were higher and didn't want to alert their prey to his presence.

<<I've got a speeder some ways in front of me. Just keep walking, you'll find me, and be cautious. I have no idea whether he's alone.>>

Leading Ner out of the mine field carefully, Castor had to admit that it had been a stroke of luck and nothing more than he had managed to actually get to her and get her out. Honestly, he had been about ready to call their time of death before he actually got there and it turned out to be alright.

"You owe me a drink." he told Ner with a little laugh, "Maybe a dance when we're both enough drinks deep, yeah?"

He wouldn't hold her to that though.

One thing that the Imperial enjoyed most about being with the GA was the sense of companionship that came. He would have saved anyone if they were GA, even if he didn't get along with them at all. He smiled a little bit and patted her on the back before they caught up with Horus, overlooking the encampment of their target.

Their target was here but he had another five people with him.

Castor took a deep breath before pulling the Force to him.

"I'll distract them - you two make sure our target goes down. We can mop up the others later."

Moving off to the side, Castor waited until he was out of sight of both Horus and Ner before stepping into the clearing, drawing the attention of all six of their enemies - which was the whole point. Letting the Force flow through him, Castor sent a series of blinding rays forwards, blinding their enemies and giving Ner and Horus probably the best distraction they could hope for.

Following Castor out of the land mine field was a lesson in patience and it was hard to fight the fear of placing a foot wrong or getting thrown off balance. Focusing intently upon the ground, duplicating each and every placement of his feet, she navigated out of danger without further incident. She chuckled softly at Castor when he mentioned the drink and a dance. ”We’ll close the cantina down”, she vowed not quibbling in the least about owing him one.

Mindful of Horus’ message, one she wasn’t going to answer while leaving the mine field nor now that she was out of that particular danger because it might give away his position, she fell in line behind Castor and cautiously made her way to the landing site of the speedster. It was one nice thing about being in the jungle; plenty of cover to keep the kidnapper from seeing them lurking in the undergrowth. Peering out from behind a tree about three meters to Castor’s left, she moved into position next to Horus.

She too could see the gathering of people and at Castor’s words she wondered which one was the target and which ones were his henchmen. Well, she didn’t suppose it really mattered in the long run. You hung out with kidnappers then you deserved what you got. Moving off to the left while Castor worked his way toward the other side, she crouched at the edge of the clearing waiting for his distraction. Taking her quick draw blaster in hand, she waited while trying to determine which of these goons was...ah that must be him by the speedster, she thought, for his features matched the description right down to the stupid looking green mohawk running down across the top of his skull. She supposed it would make for an interesting display for the Hutt who wanted the man’s head.

Nera’s skin was tingling in anticipation as she sighted along the double barrels of her pistol and waited. Suddenly she saw rays of light streaking into the encampment from the opposite side of the clearing and took her shot placing two bolts into the chest of the man dropping him instantly. Without missing a beat she would take aim and fire another double blast at the nearest of the five guards taking the man out of the equation as well.

The others joined him rather quickly and snuck up to his little hiding hole, surveying the opposition. Horus had to mentally prepare himself for taking life again, something that would eventually become a numbing process to him. But, as mentioned before, perhaps these men deserved to die. Perhaps they deserved the fate that lay at the edge of a shallow, undug grave. Much like his Twi'lek companion, he did his best to try and locate the one as the head of the ring, the one who looked like he belonged and made it his mission to take that one out. The green mohawk fool seemed to be the one they were looking for, a ringleader of sorts. He moved just as quickly as the rest of them, drawing his pistol as they drew theirs and emerging as they did. He raised his hand and tightened his grip, the metal tint of the blaster refracting in his hand as he pulled the trigger and fired three shots, intent on nailing the remainder of the enemies.

The first shot struck one of the soldiers to the left in the chest, causing him to topple over as the second blaster bolt struck his shoulder and sent him into a spin. The third blast nailed the final guardsman in the chest as well, causing Horus' eyes to light up slightly. He was really getting a hang of this whole firearm thing. He had always been a better swordsman than he ever had been a marksman, but it seemed that experience was finally catching up with him. Hopefully, there weren't any more guards nearby to destroy their hopes of a clean escape, but from his vantage point it seemed all was wrapped up here. If they wanted to actually decapitate the corpse of their target, he wished them all the luck in doing so, but he would not desecrate the dead. His soul would forever burn in the lake of fire, tormented by the victims he assailed in life. The man would suffer, far more than they could imagine, and that was enough for the Vahla.

"That's that, I suppose. So what are we doing with the body?"

Well that had actually worked.

His distraction had worked wonderfully for his allies and they took down the enemies and the target in one barrage. Honestly, it couldn't have gone better if they had actually planned it out. This had been mostly improvised and it had gone well for them all so he was going to chalk that up as a win. He let out a long breath and allowed himself to relax for a moment before taking his lightsaber in hand again as he moved towards the target.

"You're not doing anything to it." he assured Ner and Horus as he ignited his lightsaber with a swing, cutting cleanly through the target's neck, "I'm taking the target's head back for positive ID."

Disgusting? Yes. Immoral? Yes.

Still one of the best ways to confirm a bounty had been collected?

Regrettably yes.

"But you let me worry about that - you two just worry about what kind of drinks you want alright? On me."
