Ciryc'yaim
P13-2392 (Galactic Coordinates: P-13)

Ciryc'yaim (P13-2392) is a large, terrestrial planet largely covered in ice and permafrost. The areas that aren't covered in ice contain large amounts of trees and massive fjords that dominate the landscape. Surveyed many years ago by the Republic, the planet was thought to be uninhabitable. In the last few centuries, the ice cover has retracted enough for the planet to become habitable at the equator, if not somewhat chilly. It is notable for being home to the Jotunmer species, a race of bear-like sentient organisms. After the Mandalorian Civil War, the Mandalorian Clan Kelborn retreated to this planet to live in peace from the Empire and from the Alliance.
History
Ciryc'yaim was formed over 4 billion years ago around P13-239, a yellow main sequence star. It shares a system with seven other planets, each with non-assigned names. The three largest are gas giants while the others are various uninhabitable terrestrial planets with unremarkable features. An asteroid belt between P13-2393 and P13-2394 is rich with valuable metals that could be used in a war, but it has not been practical to mine these asteroids thus far. Ciryc'yaim captured two moons during its formation: P13-2392a and P13-2329b. Ciryc'yaim developed life sometime after and a large blanket of water covered the low-lying areas of the planet. Roughly 2 million years ago, the Jotunmer evolved from a bear-like race on the large continent of Trondkurs, an area covered in forests and, in the north, permafrost. The first Jotunmer had brown fur and lived in wooden huts in the massive forests of Trondkurs. This first race of Jotunmer, the Karlah, quickly spread across the continent of Trondkurs in search of food and land as tribal civilizations appeared.

As the Jotunmer spread across the lands, the ice sheets of Ciryc'yaim began to spread from the poles. Over time, much of the planet became a frozen wasteland. The Karlah experienced a neolithic revolution of sorts, but the Ciryc'yaimic Ice Age put a stop to the development of the cities. Starvation and chaos ensued before, finally, the settlements were abandoned and eventually obliterated by the approaching glaciers. Most offshoots of the Jotunmer began to die out, save for the Arhala, a white variant capable of trapping heat and surviving such bitter temperatures. As the Arhala spread across the continent, land bridges and ice bridges formed to other parts of the planet. By 38,000 BBY, the Arhala were the dominant subspecies of Jotunmer.

Much of the history of Ciryc'yaim is tribal or archaeological. What official records exist from the Republic, Empire, or Alliance chronicle a frozen planet that could be overlooked. In 18,000 BBY, a Republic exploration probe flew past the planet, looking for new planets for the fledgling Republic to colonize. Ciryc'yaim was given the designation P13-2392, a cold and heartless designation for a cold and heartless wasteland. In 3,000 BBY, the ice sheets of Ciryc'yaim began to retreat as global currents began to heat up and the supervolcano Garsh erupted. As the planet warmed up and the ice retreated, massive fjords were created. Most records from the Jotunmer chronicle the last 1,000 years. For this reason, the term Neocircyc is used for the most recent and most recorded history of the Jotunmer.

Ciryc'yaim entered the Galactic playing field unwittingly in 1,008, when Jarmouth Kelborn of the Mandalorian clan Kelborn used the planet to hide from the Empire. He later returned to the planet in 1,012 ABY, when the Mandalorian Civil War ended. He and much of his clan, along with several members of clan Solus and other loyalist factions, fled to Ciryc'yaim to live in peace on an honorable planet. The ships that landed (The Vortigern, a Skira-class cruiser of 18,000; the Alaric, a Beviin-class cruiser with a crew of 13,439; the Frittigern, a Sereno-class destroyer of 3,435; and the Desideritus, a colony ship carrying about 19,300 civilians). The city of Kurzbesk was founded, using various parts of the Mandalorian ships and supplies from colony ships. A source of metal was found near the city, along with a source of fuel and clean water. Today, Kurzbesk is a settlement of roughly 62,000 people. The districts are named after each ship, with the Vortigern district being the most important.
Geography
Ciryc'yaim is still defined largely by its massive ice sheets. As these ice sheets retreated to the poles quickly, they created fjords and glacier valleys. Kurzbesk is built next to one of the largest glacier valleys on the planet: Isbok. There are three continents on Ciryc'yaim with two not covered by ice. The continent Trondkurs is the largest continent. It is largely uncovered by ice, save for the southern shores. Kurzbesk rests between freshwater lakes Isbok and Susbok. The Beskarfjell mountains, a large mountain range on the western side of Trondkurs, dominates the horizon from Kurzbesk. Forests largely cover this continent and it is considered to be the most habitable continent on the planet. Between natural springs, alpine valleys, clean water, and abundant meat, Trondkurs is livable, if not downright cozy at times. The massive downside is the lack of arable soil. Plains are an unheard of thing and the bedrock of the continent is incredibly close to the topsoil. While this is good for buildings, this is bad for things other than trees and flowers. What farms do exist on Ciryc'yaim are restrained to farms inside glass domes or subsurface farms.

The second continent, Garshjakalfr, is a varied continent. The southern shore is filled with natural hot springs and beautiful mountain ranges. If Trondkur's beauty is in its trees, Garshjakalfr's beauty is in its mountain ranges. Had Ciryc'yaim been rediscovered earlier, it would have been the perfect place for ski resorts. Instead, it is an area of untapped beauty. The Jotunmer refer to the southern shores of Garshjakalfr as 'The Holy Shore.' Garshjakalfr's climate varies as one travels north. The beautiful area turns to frozen surface lakes, permafrost, and glaciers. Temperatures in Garshjakalfr's northern coast could kill a man at night. Supplies are scarce, save for Saberwolves, Mammorks, and Tjalkanfir Dragons, all of which are incredibly dangerous. Some Mandalorians will travel to the northern areas of Garshjakalfr to kill one of these massive creatures. Garshjakalfr is also home to a large amount of Jotunmer.

The third continent, Friksjenkalfr, is a large continent entirely covered by glaciers. It is, in no sense of the word, hospitable to anyone who isn't absolutely prepared. Its featureless, dreary landscape is dominated by snow drifts and ice plans. Snowstorms are incredibly common and are capable of grounding aircraft. If Garshjakalfr's northern coast is inhospitable, Friksjenkalfr is hell. Mandalorians often come to Friksjenkalfr in search of honor. The chance to kill a Tjalkanfir Dragon is something few can resist. 13% of all Mandalorians traveling to Friksjenkalfr do not return. Freshwater is hard to come by. Most Jotunmer settlements in the area are gathered around hot springs or even underground lakes. The Svartal Tribe is known for living in seclusion under the surface, coveting what may very well be the largest freshwater source on the continent.

The strong axial tilt makes for impressive displays of the Aurora Borealis at winter times on either poles.
Planetary Info

Large amounts of lumber, natural gas, and heavy metals (Duralium, iron)

Inhabitants
Native species include the sentient Jotunmer species, a bear-like species living in tribes. Others include Fenrik Wolves, Mammorks, and Tjalkanfir Dragons. Mandalorian settlement exists on the surface.
Culture

Ciryc'yaim is an outdoorsman's fantasy and a Mandalorian's paradise. The Mandalorian cultures, enriched with Kelborn heritage and hints of Jotunmeri influence, make for a unique and rustic architecture in Kurzbesk. Brutalist architecture is fused with cozy, rustic architecture in this city. Many people live in modular apartments, though there is a growing trend amongst native Mandalorians to expand to the 'suburbs' of the city, which requires making one's own home out of gathered supplies. Concrete, wood, and metal are commonly used in homes. The modular buildings enjoy plumbing, but most non-modular buildings must buy water to store in above-ground tanks. Ciryc'yaim has its own intranet network with encyclopedic articles and intraplanetary communications. This network is managed by comm towers. Accessing Republic, Imperial, or other networks is simply impossible.

Most people born on this planet choose not to leave, making it truly a planet of hermits. A common saying in Kurzbesk is, "Ogir luubid kote anade!" (There is enough glory here for everybody). As with most Mandalorians, the desire to seek glory is ingrained in their being. Men often travel to polar areas to tangle with the fiercest animals Ciryc'yaim has to offer. From the massive Fenrik packs that can rip through metal with their teeth to the Mammorks, massive seal-like elephants with large tusks and a bad temper, Mandalorians will seek these famed creatures out and attempt to kill them. The biggest prize, however, is the legendary Tjalkanfir Dragons, massive narwhal-like animals. Their tusks are prized items. Only a few have ever been successfully extracted.

For information on the Jotunmeri culture, please consult its species page.
Government
Ciryc'yaim's sole city, Kurzbesk, is owned by the Mandalorians. Their settlement on the planet follows much the same rules as other Mandalorian settlements in the days of yore had, though two clans exist on Ciryc'yaim: Kelborn and Solus. Ciryc'yaim is one of the few places where members of clan Solus can be found. While they are aware that Skirata and Veshok have ceased the merger they saw in the Mandalorian Civil War, the people of Solus remain proud and dignified. The leader of Ciryc'yaim's Mandalorians, chief Jarmouth Kelborn, keeps a firm watch over Ciryc'yaim. He emphasizes defense and isolationism, convinced that Imperials will someday invade Ciryc'yaim and wipe out the 'last bastion of free Mandalorians.' While some Mandalorians on the planet believe that clan Kelborn has the power to pick up the pieces of the Mandalorians now that the clans are scattered, most are absolutely okay with remaining on Ciryc'yaim.

Rules on conservation of resources and building materials leads to Kurzbesk being a sustainable city. Travel advisories are issued if snow is believed to be a threat and travel to the frozen wastes is restricted in winter time.

I was reading over the geography and noticed your strong axial tilt. In scientific terms, this would cause severe seasons during the difference between "summer" and "winter", posing the question, is winter on Ciryc'yaim a deadly situation? I could see there being a "Season of Storms" due to the significant shifts in seasons that would result from the tilt, where the continents would undergo significant climate change. Perhaps that could be a form of trial to Clan Kelborn, a coming of age of surviving these storms? Given proper technology levels, they could easily live through them in secured bunkers/settlements, but I imagine anything outside in the conditions would be hard pressed to live.

Also, I think it would be totally awesome if they measured their years in terms of Great Storms...

That's a great idea. I'll have to incorporate that into the profile.

Also, I think this should be noted if I didn't note it in the profile: Clan Kelborn does not own the planet. They own the city of Kurzbesk and some land around it. Most of the planet is uninhabitable for Mandalorians.

I believe he is, last time I spoke to him he gave me the impression he was just waiting for this planet to get approved since he wanted it to be a part of the Mando group we were talking about.

So, if this planet isn't "owned" by the Mandalorians... why is it's name in Mando'a? Don't the natives have a name for the planet? And wouldn't these giant walking polar bears (unless I misread completely) be horribly offended if these armoured hooligans came in, took over their city, and renamed everything according to their alien language and culture?

I know I most certainly would be. Also, while I am not the faction admin, I don't think Indie factions are allowed to own entire cities either. A compound within a city, sure. But an entire city? Probably won't fly.

They can have cities, they just can't say something like "THIS 3/4 OF THE WORLD IS OURS."

Please add an Intent section.

Also, in curiosity, due to the Mando'a name, did it only gain the name Ciryc'yaim after Kelborn's colonization or did it hold that name prior to that time?

The name is in Mando'a simply because that's what they call it. Whatever the Jotunmer call it is up to them. Sort of like how we call Mars 'Mars.' We don't own it, but nobody else has a name for it.

Kurzbesk is on the central continent, which does not contain Jotunmer. They live in the polar regions, which the Mandalorians couldn't even hope to hold.

Clan Kelborn is an unapproved faction (currently in archives). Once Kelborn is reapproved, that aspect of the Intent section will be brought into consideration.

Ral and I are working on a merger via an alliance. Since Clan Kelborn didn't pick up as much steam as it had in the interest thread (whyyyyy), I'll probably list my resources/work on their clan page unless I can pick up steam with Kelborn again (anybody?)

It was my hope to make a Mando Confederacy of sorts that is essentially a combination of clans with Kelborn as a member and we could have Ciryc'yaim as a planet we have an outpost assets on. It's partly why I didn't tell Crim to go ahead with trying to get interest in Kelborn since we were planning on just folding it into the coalition with Bralor and Renelo and whoever else wanted to join. Didn't want him to do all the work to get approved only to archive it when we threw up the merged faction.

Was the Mandalorian colonization a public matter? As in did the rest of the galaxy know about this? It won't affect the review, but it could lead to imperial attack, as the Imperium has been targeting Mandalorian nexuses since the Second Mandalorian Genocide.

Nope. This is a pretty well-guarded secret thus far, even among non-Kelborn Mandalorians.
