DESCRIPTION​

The K-wing assault starfighter was produced by Koensayr Manufacturing, the same company responsible for producing the venerable Y-wing. Like many other New Republic starfighters, the K-wing was designed to excel in a specific primary role in combat while retaining the flexibility to serve secondary functions if needed.

The K-wing starfighter's primary missions included precision bombing of planetary targets, slow-moving capital ships, and spaceborne installations. It also performed secondary missions as an escort or reconnaissance ship. To fulfill its role the K-wing carried an unusually large arsenal for a vessel of its size. The hull had a total of 18 hard points, five on each upper wing and four on each lower wing, to allow technicians to arm the ship with a large variety of projectile weapons.

While both turrets are useful to discourage enemy fighters, the heavy cannon is also used to strafe larger ships or hard ground targets. The cockpit command module detaches can fly under its own power instead of a standard ejection seat or escape pod.

Despite it's greater overall weight than a standard Y-wing it has similar speed and maneuverability as a result of the three high powered ion engines. The most notable function beyond the heavy armament was the SLAM system, or SubLight Acceleration Motor, which is what truly made it a threat in the field. It allows the ship to draw power directly from the laser weapon systems and boost the sublight engines, increasing it's top speed and accelerating it 100MGLT. The SLAM systems allows the K-wing to rapidly unleash it's payload against a large ship or ground target and then escape defending fighters or screening fire.

But the ship was not without its downsides. Unlike blastboats or dedicated heavy bombers like the StarFortress the K-wing possesses only light shields, suited best for hit and run tactics. It also has no inbuilt hyperdrive and thus needs to be launched from a carrier vessel or planetary hangar. The wide profile gives it an impressive amount of front-loaded firepower but the two turrets struggle to fire directly at aft pursuers, with dedicated interceptors often able to sit behind the engines to keep away from direct fire. It is best support by more nekfight capable craft on the approach to ensure it can do its job.

The crew consists of a pilot, two gunners for the turrets, and a bombardier who controls the hardpoint ordinance. While it can be flown by only a single pilot they cannot use any of the weapons systems alone.

Because of its qualities, the K-wing is still seen to this day in the hands of planetary and station defense forces that expect to deal with pirate vessels or invading fleets, considered a valuable asset in a mixed group of fighters, but sees less use in the modern day deployed from carrier ships on the attack.

LEGALITY​

Restricted. BTL-A4 Y-Wings are heavy assault craft, and they are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT​

To introduce an unusually designed starfighter from Legends into the site canon as a different kind of bomber.
