The footage cut into the studio with the banner "Breaking News" playing across the screen between the two news anchors. A Twi'lek man and a Nautolan woman sat behind the desk and even after years as news anchors, both looked shocked by what they were about to announce.
"In an unprecedented turn of events, there has been a mass secession from both the New Republic and the Free World's Alliance. After years of conflict with the Empire and months of intermittent conflict between the Republic and the FWA, planets across the Core and Inner Rim have announced their intention for mass-secession from their respective governments. These planets have asserted that they are tired of being dragged into wars on behalf of leaders who are out of touch with the desires of their people." the Nautolan woman began.
"Initial reports indicate that there are not even enough worlds left within their respective governments to shoulder the burden of maintaining such a broad and unified organization. I'll hand it over to Chuff Taneth to discuss. Chuff?" she said before motioning to the Twi'lek to take it away.
"Well, that's right Yannie. I'll tell you, it reminds me of the secession of the FWA planets during the war with the Empire. These groups joined in a defensive pact over a century ago, but in recent days that has been rife with problems. Now with another war looming on the horizon, FWA and Republic planets alike have just been asking "why?" Why another war? Why more conflict? Why provide our forces and resources to a war we don't want? After the Republic attacks on Commenor and Taanab many Republic worlds are wanting out of supplying troops to a war of aggression." he said, only now stopping to finally catch his breath.
"With all that planets that are leaving, I would even go so far as to say that the New Republic and Free World Alliance as we know it have ceased to exist. In the coming days I wouldn't be surprised to see historically prominent and wealthy powers like Hapes or even Coruscant and Kuat might try to ally individually with surrounding planets. Others may find themselves joining in with the ISC or perhaps even the Jedi or the Empire. I'll tell you, we haven't seen a change like this on the galactic political stage since the fall of the Galactic Empire." he said.
"It's difficult to swallow, Chuff, but I can tell you we'll be bringing you all the coverage in the coming days. For all your galactic political needs, I'm Yannie Garo."
And the footage cut to black. That was it, indeed the FWA and New Republic dissolved, effectively and de jure ceased to exist as the anchors said. What will happen in the aftermath will be... interesting.
- What does this mean for my senator character?
- Senators will still have significant influence over the planets they are on. Those who have achieved higher ranks (Consul, for instance) will still be able to have influence over nearby planets and will still be looked to by many of the surrounding planets for leadership.
- What happens to the assets of the New Republic and Free World Alliance?
- The assets acquired by the NR/FWA will return and be distributed to the individual planets. For the FWA this will not be significantly different from the current situation. For the NR it will also be a redistribution of assets to the various planets formerly within the NR.
- What will happen to the galactic senate?
- Planets that wish to remain in the galactic senate will still be able to maintain voting and representation within the galactic senate. Senators will still be allowed to represent their worlds within the GS if they desire to do so. Seats previously devoted to the FWA/NR will now be split up between the various independent systems in the galaxy.
