DESCRIPTION​

Beamer rifles are a relatively common weapon found in many parts of the Stygian Reaches, particularly those settled by the ancient Tionese. A direct development of beam tube technology, these weapons are fundamentally similar to conventional blasters in that they have a built-in power supply and use magnetically confined plasma to inflict damage, however unlike blasters they fire a continuous beam pulsed for a split second, rather than discrete bolts. As a result, beamer weapons are far less efficient than blasters, but tend to inflict more damage. Unlike beam tubes, they typically have a useable stun setting, although its effects are not subtle.

Beamer rifles are less common than their 'tube cousins in many parts of the Stygian Reaches, being more complex and expensive. They tend to be used chiefly by the military, and by beings wealthy or connected enough to be able to acquire one.

LEGALITY​

Legal. Ownership of beamer rifles is not technically restricted in most of the Stygian Reaches, however openly carrying such a weapon in public might be on more "civilized" worlds. On less civilized worlds, it still might draw unwanted scrutiny. Carrying a beamer - or a blaster which could be mistaken for one - in the Stygian Reaches might also cause the assumption that the character is connected to the military, or that they are wealthy.
