A man's blaster shot into the air while he held a woman tight around the neck. Alais was among a sea of faces in the cantina it was happening in. Instead of causing a scene, she'd gotten down and under a table like most of the crowd. Obviously this was some sort of robbery or gang war in this area. The woman the thug was holding was a hostage. One of the ladies of the night, or a server or something, Alais guessed. She hadn't watched the entire scene unfold, she'd only sensed danger and acted when the crowd started to panic.

She was on a business trip so she was wearing a dress instead of armor, although beneath it were her weapons. If push came to shove, she'd draw them, but until then she was just another civilian in the eyes of the people here. She wasn't interested in getting caught up in whatever this was because it was so far away from home. Anything she did here to make a name wouldn't last, because she had no nearby network to maintain it.

She watched as someone came up with their arms in the air, though she had a sneaking suspicion he was up to something. And then there were shots fired and Alais decided it was time to sneak her way out of here before things got even more heated. She crawled under the tables towards an exit until she saw someone come through it. Another thug with weapons. This was not an ideal situation.

Home sweet home was not a phrase many would want to associate with Nar Shaddaa, but Jora was proud to be one who did. The scum, chaos, and party life were certainly an appeal to many smugglers, criminals, and lowlifes, but for her it was different. This little moon had been her salvation from an even worse life. Hutts were disliked in many corners, but for the Codru-ji girl they were heroes. The Core had nothing on Hutt Space as far as she was concerned.

Peace was relatively maintained by a complex network of gangs and respect for the syndicate. It wasn't too uncommon to see the lower gangs try to nudge in on each other or bite off more than they deserved. That was usually quickly resolved by the balances of power though. It was a fools errand to try to make it big with a Nar Shaddaa gang war. Those small fish who tried soon realized they were not the sharks in this pond. And now it seemed another group was about to learn that lesson at a nearby cantina.

Jora always kept her speeder's comms tuned to local reports and Poe was always scanning for trouble. Blaster fire at a cantina hardly made it to any kind of news or dispatch, but an attack did. Multiple thugs and a hostage on top of the shots did make it to one of her monitored dispatches. It was a quick trip from her location with a speeder. No one seemed to be guarding the front door so she parked haphazardly off to one side before quickly moving to the cover of the wall. Her top arms drew her blasters and a bottom arm stealthily held the small vibroblade beneath her coat.

"Poe, take a peek inside through the windows." The droid beeped back an affirmation as it floated to a filthy window up higher.

Suspicions confirmed by Poe were that a hostage was being held at blaster point while chaos erupted. Thugs were all around but no one seemed to be dead yet. There was no way to tell who these guys were, but they were stupid to be causing a ruckus like this on a planet full of scum. Jora stood outside the door, waiting for a sign or some sort of reason to intervene. She listened closely for any demands or announcements.

Kalen had been sent here on a training mission. He was waiting for a message from his Master on how to proceed when he felt the hairs stand up on the back of the neck. The blaster shot came a moment later.

His lightsaber was already in his hand as he spun and stood. The crowd pushed away from the hostage-taker as he started yelling but Kalen snaked his way through the crowd until he was in the opening. His hands were out by his side, lightsaber still not engaged.

"I'm sure we can work this out. Let the girl go," he said in a calm voice, even though his heart was about the race out of his chest. "SHUT UP!" the thug responded, pointing the blaster at Kalen instead of the woman. The Jedi forced his breathing under control, he had been training for situations like this, though he wished his Master was here, she would know how to handle this. "Step back!" the man shouted at Kalen, shaking his blaster. "If you try anything, ill blow her brains out!" he said, eyes darting around as the room continued to push back away, not wanting to involve themselves.

Kalen calmed his mind, finding his center before locking eyes with the man. He wove the Force through his words as he spoke quietly "You want to let her go.". The man squirmed a bit, his mind in turmoil before he finally shook off the attempt. Angered by whatever was going on, he shot twice at Kalen, who ignited his lightsaber. The blue blade deflected the first shot into the ceiling and the second shot in the direction of the thug. The shot buzzed by the man's head and struck a pillar behind him.

It caused the thug to stumble back slightly, his grip loosening on the woman. Seeing his opening, Kalen outstretched a hand and the man flew backward, crashing into the same pillar, slumping the ground.

The room was in a panic at the shots and the ensuing chaos. Kalen disengaged his lightsaber and rushed towards the woman who was now cowering on the floor. "Are you okay? We need to get out of here," he said offering her a hand.

Alais' eyes caught sight of a blue saber, the third she'd ever seen. That changed her mind about a lot of things. She needed to know more about this man if he was what she suspected he was. The issue was... thugs were coming up behind him while he was kneeling to help that woman.

Lilith decided making a scene was worth it now. Since she was hidden from the view of the cameras, and no one was paying attention to her, she took the opportunity to fall back on her training. As one of the thugs walked up behind the possible Jedi, aiming his blaster, Alias reached out with the Force.

She sent a wild push out, sending one of the thugs flying violently into the wall. She realized that the Jedi would be able to sense what she'd done, but it came with little risk in her opinion, since she was a practiced liar. When the second thug behind the possible Jedi looked on confused, Alais came out drawing her blaster.

He reacted fairly quickly however and fired first, but she manged to dodge with the sense of danger being her guide. As she dodged she sent her own shots off. One landed on the side of the thugs head, the other missed and went into the wall behind him, but the first shot was enough to end his life.

"I suggest using the back door while there's an opening," she said, not bothering with introductions at this point.

He was aware of the criminals behind him, but their attention was being directed away from him. He had spun around as he sensed someone directly behind him but before he could react he was thrown across the room.

His eyes went directly to Alais who he had sensed channeling the Force. As shots rang out the people in the room yelled and began fleeing anywhere they thought they could to get away. He turned back towards the woman on the floor. She was still trembling on the ground, clearly shaken up by the ordeal.

"We need to get you out of here." he said placing a hand on her shoulder. As he did, he reached out with the Force, soothing her worries. A second later her eyes started to regain their focus. He turned to hear the woman who had used the Force earlier speak. "Good idea." he said helping the woman stand. "Come on."

He pushed his way through the crowd, holding on to the former hostage's hand to make sure she kept up. There was further blaster fire from behind them. It sounded like they had started to fight one another. Hopefully, they could get away before the confusion faded.

Alais simply followed the pair out, watching their backs as they went. Luckily, they were able to make it out without any of the three getting shot. She doubted anyone here would remember her face after things went back to normal, but one never really knew. Either way, once they walked out into the ally and rounded a corner, Alais decided it was time she made her move.

"You should go home, back to safety," she said, waving a hand towards the woman. The woman repeated the words with a blank stare before leaving, assuming the Jedi did nothing to interfere with Alais.

As soon as the woman walked away, Alais turned her attention to the man she suspected was a jedi. "Who are you? Where are you from? Why are you here? Why were you involved with that little scene back there?"

Once again she caught herself bombarding some stranger with a million questions—she'd done the same to Tal. But, this time she didn't feel intimidated, just unsure about exactly what to ask, so she just asked a bunch of questions to try to start somewhere.

They made their escape, the mass panic made it easy enough to fade into the crowd. He remained silent until they got a few blocks down, he was about to ask the woman where she could go, but the other woman spoke first, Kalen felt the familiar tinge of Force energy as she spoke to the other woman.

The women's eyes went distant, glazing over slightly before she simply started walking home. He needed to figure out what to do next. He had no ship, no credits to speak of. He was supposed to be meeting his Master here but she had been nowhere to be seen. She did this often, changed the plans without telling him, something about helping him learn to improvise.

Tucking his lightsaber away, he pulled up a hood and started to walk away from the pair. Kalen had questions about the woman, but it wasn't safe with her having knowledge about what he was, even if she also used the Force.

Before he could get away, she followed after him and started bombarding him with questions. "Im just another stranger and I am from some backwater world you have never heard of." he said. He didn't like being unpleasant but that seemed the way of things here. "Just look like she needed some help back there." he answered her last question with a shrug as he continued to walk.

This again. Alais wasn't about to let it go so easily, she hadn't before. Instead of letting him walk off, she ran in front of him and blocked his path, laying a hand on her hip near her weapons.

She'd step in his way again if he tried to get around her, and let him know she wasn't shy about starting a fight. They were in an ally way, after all, and when you walked down an ally way on Nar Shaddaa and saw two strangers, you usually turned around to find another path to go.

"Why are you walking away?!" she said, trying not to shout but not exactly being successful. "Are you a Jedi? I need to know more about them, outside of rumors and the sparse and contradicting information on the holonet."

It didn't really matter to her that she was being blunt about what she wanted with him. He'd probably just assume she was a curious stranger with some knowledge of the Force, which was, in reality, pretty much true. Although, she thought, if he continued to ignore her it would still tell her something about this Jedi Order. At least, enough to satisfy some of her curiosity.

It was better for her that she not get tangled up but she was persistent. She wasn't quiet, not in the least. "Okay okay," he said looking around to see if the entire planet had heard her or not.

"Yes," he said keeping his voice down. "I am a Jedi," he said looking back at her. "Is there somewhere more...not so out in the open we can go? I can answer some more of your questions then," he said. The Jedi weren't overtly secret but they were a rare thing in the Galaxy. Many didn't trust them, many more didn't believe they existed.

He needed to lay low for a bit anyway and think about he could contact his Master to get out of here. She was obviously trained in the Force so his Master would likely have wanted him to find out more about her as well. "I'm Kalen by the way." he said reaching out a hand to shake hers if she accepted.

To her surprise he just...admitted it. No questions. No threatening to kill her. Odd, but she'd take it. He asked for somewhere to go and she thought on it for a few quickened heartbeats. She had rented a place here for awhile, and she wasn't powerless anymore if he tried something. After a small bit of hesitation, she answered with, "I...I do."

Then he gave his name, which obviously meant he'd be waiting for one from her. She wasn't in the habit of giving out her alias' to just anyone, and thought on a couple random names. However... something inside her missed her birth name, despite the pain connected to it there were still happy moments. It had been a longing for awhile, and perhaps, even if their conversation lasted only a short time, this might be her opportunity to hear it one more time and get it out of her system.

Before reaching out, she simply muttered, "Ae-Aelia..." When she did grab his hand, she didn't let go and instead attempted to pull him behind her. She didn't want to let go of her chance of questioning a real life Jedi.

It didn't take long for them to get to her place. It was on the bottom floor and near the cantina they'd come out of, which was why she was there. The place was pretty run down and slummy, but it was nothing she wasn't use to. In fact, it was a huge improvement from her childhood.

When they got in she let go of his hand, but he'd be able to tell she did so with a hint of hesitation. She'd speak again soon, "What is a jedi's purpose?" It probably sounded extremely strange to him, but she wouldn't know that; to her it was a perfectly valid question. She'd been told what her purpose in the Force was, but never what a jedi's was.

He gave her a faint smile when she gave her name. Perhaps it was a fake name, it didn't much matter to Kalen. He understood that people here had to have a sense of distrust to simply survive. Without much warning, he was being pulled along down the streets of Nar Shaddaa.

When she finally let go of his hand, they were standing in a small, run-down apartment. He was used to living a fairly plain existence so he didn't give the place a second thought.

Kalen lowered his hood as the door closed behind him. It wasn't long before she asked another question, a particularly deep question. "Well." he said giving some thought "A Jedi can have many purposes, but if I had to pick a main driving purpose for the Order, it would be to help others wherever possible," he said. It was obviously much deeper than that, but he had a feeling she hadn't brought him here to be preached at.

"Where did you learn to use the Force?" he asked. "You were pretty impressive back there," he said giving another faint smile.

"Help others?" she echoed, rising an eyebrow at his seemly soft smile. He seemed disarming, but she wouldn't let him trick her like that. "Help others how?" she added.

His answer didn't really give her much, because she also helped in her own way. There had to be some significant difference between the two, especially if it was true that Jedi didn't use the Force properly.

Then he asked the question, which she needed to pause to think of how to answer. However, it didn't take long because lying became second nature if you grew up on Nar Shaddaa. "A long time ago I met an older man. He taught me some things, but disappeared one day." She paused for a second and grabbed something on her belt. "I think he died, but before he left he gave me this."

Alais, currently "Aelia" pulled out her lightsaber. She pointed it up, away from both her and the Jedi and thumbed the switch. It sprang to life with a flash of blue. She still had this blade with a blue crystal, and decided now was another good time to use it because his blade was the same color.

He thought about her counter-question. It caught him a bit off guard. It was one of those things he just knew but had never really had to put into words before. "In any way, we can I guess." he said with a bit of a shrug. "but its more than that. A Jedi doesn't just use the Force, they commune with it, let it lead them." he said, going a bit deeper.

His hand went to his light own lightsaber as she drew it her own. He didn't know this woman, so he definitely wasn't about to relax while she held a weapon. He didn't draw his lightsaber, but he did take an instinctive step away from her to give him more room if he tried something. He reached out with the Force to gather information about his surroundings. It was all a defensive instinct. She hadn't attacked him earlier, so that was something but he remained wary.

"And this man? Was he a Jedi" he asked, continuing to reach out with the Force to try and determine her motives. He wasn't exceptionally skilled, but he wasn't trying anything too advanced.

"Lead you?" she echoed once more, though noticed him stepping back when she ignited the saber.

In a way it felt good not to be the one intimated. Of course, she realized she had a very long way to go when it came to the Force, but she'd already began to have some confidence. Enough that she wouldn't get her heckles up unless this man drew his weapon against her. That didn't mean that she didn't switch off her lightsaber to make him more comfortable though. She just wanted answers and to understand what Jedi were.

When she did switch it off, she went to a chair at the very small table in her place and sat down. She looked at him curiously to buy a few more seconds to think on his question, before finally answering, "I guess. I didn't know him for very long before he went missing." It was the best answer she could think of, though funny enough she had thought Tal was a Jedi when they first delved into the subject of the Force.

"Can you explain what you mean by letting it lead you?" she asked after, not all that interested in continuing with her false story. After all, she was here to figured out what a Jedi was, not tell a story. "I still don't understand. And to be frank, you haven't even answered my first question. How exactly do you help people?"

There was something off about her answer. It made sense that she would hide her pat from him if she did, that was her choice and he wouldn't press the issue. Everyone was entitled to their secrets if they wanted them.

"My Master could explain it better I think." he said, his face twisting a bit. "But if you quiet your mind, and learn how to listen to it, it will speak to you. The Force isn't just a bunch of powers, its alive." he said trying to explain.

"Helping people isn't an exclusive trait of the Jedi. You helped someone tonight when most people would have just turned the other way, that's what a Jedi strives to do. Put others before themselves." he said.

She had put the weapon away, so he sat down across from her, still ready to defend himself if need be but a bit more relaxed.

The Force didn't speak to her. It did tell her things, but in a less direct way than what she thought he was describing. What it did do was help her focus her pain and rage from her past into power in order to protect herself and strive for more than to be someones victim. Needless to say, she wasn't sure she believed this Jedi's words.

"If you make a habit of putting others before you in the way you describe, you'll end up dead. So why do it? Why is a strangers life more important than yours?" She realized he could be talking about protecting hutt gang leaders or some other more significant figure, but the question still remained. Why put their life above yours? "How do you know that your deeds wont impact the galaxy in a more significant way if you live instead of them?"

She thought on it a bit more, finding herself a little bit frustrated with his answer now but not angry. More than anything, she actually wanted to understand him. "You're also setting them up for failure, aren't you? If you convince them there's a chance some hero will be there to save them. Perhaps they'll even become more trusting of strangers, or the onlookers will, and end up dead because of it. So I guess my question is, how do you know you aren't causing more harm than good?"

"I guess death is a possibility." he said with a shrug. "You could also word it "Why is my life more important than theirs" though" he said. He was probably doing a terrible job at explaining it, though he was being as honest as he could be.

"You can never know the future though, its more about doing the good you can in the present." he continued. He pondered her next words. It wasn't a bad line a logic, he could see how it would make sense to someone living on this world. You had to be self-centered to survive in a place like this.

"If we hadn't helped that woman tonight, would she had been better off?" he asked tilting his head. "She would likely either be dead or at the very least a prisoner of whoever had taken her hostage." he replied. "Are their situations that are a little less cut and dry than that? Sure, but that can't be an excuse to do nothing..." he said trailing off.

Aelia finally started to feel her frustration start to bubble into anger at his answer. Not the first one, that made some sense even if she didn't completely agree. The second answer was what had her cling onto what patience she could. She got up from the table and turned away so he wouldn't see her expression, tapping some of her fingers on the side of her leg as a unconscious way to vent her feelings.

"Yes, she might've been better off dead than living on this moon. Think about it. What did we give her? Another morning to open her eyes, so she can get up and sell herself because she has no other options. No other options beside the one we just took away," she said in a cold voice, one trying to mask the feelings beneath it.

"And it is an excuse, because you're ignoring what I said. She didn't die from our actions but others might. Maybe that's not the worst fate, but if they're truly unlucky they wont die, they'll just have someone come along and crush every sense they have of trust and hope, leaving them more broken than before," she added.

She sighed, crossing her arms. Maybe Tal was right about the Jedi. She hadn't gotten to delve into the Force, but she remembered him saying how they were misguided. With that in mind she simply muttered, "I just... wanted to learn about Jedi, but I can't think of anymore questions so you can go."

He could sense her agitation grow as she spoke. He understood the logic, it was heartbreaking that someone could feel that way, but he understood. "Then let's go give her another option," he said meeting her eyes.

"I see what you are saying, but there are infinite possibilities for each and every choice we make and if you get caught up in the possibilities of every single one, you would never be able to do anything." he said keeping his voice calm.

"The Jedi Philosophy isn't for everyone, and its definitely not something that can be fully explored in one conversation." he said. When she told him he could leave, he gave a slight nod and pushed back from the table. "I hope I didn't upset you, it was certainly not my intention." he said pulling his hood back up. "May the Force be with you, Aelia." he said with another smile as he turned to leave.

She felt herself seriously considering his last words, finding a small bit of anger dwindle as she lost herself in it. It did make her pause, but after a few moments of consideration she thought of something. Maybe there was infinite possibilities, but some possibilities were greater than others. The ones she mentioned were at the top of the list, and not considering them was foolish and harmful. They also didn't hold her back. They did the opposite. They spurred her towards action.

If he really was a Jedi, if he accurately represented what they were, they were doing more harm than good in the grand scheme of things. They did not consider the bigger picture, they lived in the moment.

No, there were much better ways to fix moons like Nar Shaddaa. There was the possibly to wipe out corrupt civilizations that lived on it, putting those that suffer out of misery, snuffing out the causes and making way for something greater. Perhaps meeting this Jedi helped her with one thing—accepting that she was on the right path, or one of them.

He said her birth name as he left, and she promised herself that it'd be the last time she ever gave it out to anyone.
