The room was pitch black. Shen could hear nothing, not even the sound of his own controlled breathing, as he knelt in the darkness focusing on his surroundings. The force flowed through the young man like a stream through sparse pebbles. In his mind he took hold of the force and slowed everything down to a snail’s pace. He became aware of a steady and regular beat. It was close and getting ever so slightly closer. He homed in on it, noting a strange flutter every third beat. He knew this sound was that of the heart of his partner.
Everything seemed to freeze though only for an instant as he became aware of the golden energy blade of Taish’s lightsaber bearing down on him. Gathering the force to him like a maiden would gather her skirts he sprang backwards from his kneeling position, bringing his lightsaber to his hand as he did so.
His eyes now open, all that lit the room was the yellow glow from his friend’s weapon.
“You heard me I take it?” She laughed her musical laugh.
Shen activated his own saber, the blue blade springing to life. “You’re not the quietest there is.”

With that she leaped at him again swinging her saber down with her decent. There was a sharp hiss as Shen brought his blade up to ward off her rash attack. He maintained his connection to the force, using it to sustain his thought. This was not like Taish, to recklessly leap into an engagement. Too late he realised her plan just as her foot swept his legs from beneath him. He twisted in the air, landing a hand on the floor and then spring boarding up and back, landing a good five feet from his fellow Jedi.

“Heh” he grunted “you’ve gotten faster.”
She laughed her laugh again “I know.”

This time Shen engaged, spinning his lightsaber in a blur of blue and reversing the hilt in his palm so to bring in the attack from an unexpected angle. Taish saw through him and brought her blade to meet his in another loud hiss of sparks. The room flashed and went dim as the two parried and struck with lightning precision. Shen flipped over the head of Taish, again with his blade reversed and tried to uppercut her. Taish responded by deflecting the blow, spinning back a few feet and stretching out her left palm to Shen’s chest, sending a wave of force energy at him. He was sent sailing through the air before making contact with the wall. He fell to the floor, his saber deactivating and clattered to a halt next to him.

He groaned, rubbing his head as he got to his feet. “You got me again.”
Again her laugh sang in his ears “yes indeed; you nearly had me this time though, I wasn’t expecting that new trick.”
Shen hid his frustration, knowing such things to be beneath him. He had never beaten Taish in training, from the time they were younglings to now, as fully fledged Jedi Knights. He took hold of his saber with the force and brought it to his hand. Just as he was about to speak again a quiet beeping sound emitted from his wrist. His com link. He looked at the caller and his heart sank.
“The council.”
Taish noticed her friend’s change in mood. “I’m sure it’s just a check up. You know, see how everything’s going.”
“Or it’s another mission. Either way, I must go.”
He parted ways with Taish and walked into the cool afternoon of the Dantooine summer. He passed a group of younglings training with remotes as he made his way down the echoing enclave halls. His memory wandered as he remembered the stinging lasers that they were equipped with. He’d gotten the hang of it eventually though. Of course Taish mastered it almost immediately. Sighing he stopped outside of some large blast doors. He pressed the button on the panel before him to alert the council that he had arrived. A few moments later the doors hissed apart, revealing the council chambers. A large circle was set into the floor, ringed by steps all around it. He walked forward, robes fluttering in the breeze.
He reached the centre, kneeling before the masters seated around him. “You summoned me, Masters?”
Master Zhar smiled fondly. “Stand, Shen, we’re not here to berate you!”
Shen stood. “Yes Master Zhar.” He looked at the faces around him. Only three masters were present. Master Vrook, Master Zhar and Master Vandar.
The aging Master Vandar spoke up. “We have called you here because we see you have made good progress in your training. You have become very powerful, and have stayed true to the Jedi code. This bodes well for you and has led us to believe we may assign to you a padawan.”
Shen’s mouth dropped.
Master Vrook smirked. “Shen you’ve proven yourself a worthy knight. You’ve not fled our will to join Revan and Malek. You’ve performed your duties admirably and your dedication to the code has made you a prime candidate.”
Struggling to come to grips with this sudden news, Shen managed a few shaken words of thanks. He would accept the will of the council, as always.
Master Zhar grinned broadly. “Shen we want you to meet your new padawan; Rukin.”
With that the blast doors hissed open and a young teenage boy of about fourteen years walked into the circle, stopping to kneel.
“Masters” he said, with a tone of boldness and not of submission. Shen was surprised by the young boy. A fellow human, he had on tattered robes and unkempt hair with a pair of beady hazel eyes.
Master Zhar continued “Rukin is very much of the same cut of Padawan you were Shen. He progresses well and keeps a steady head most of the time, though he has a certain... roughness about him. We trust you will train him well.”

With that they were both dismissed. Out in the hall Shen looked his new padawan over. “Rukin? Well this is the first I have seen you.”
“And I you Master. I have been at this enclave for eight years now and am excited that I will finally be able to take my training to a new level.”
Shen noticed that spark of boldness in the lad again. Something about him was lustful. Or was it simple eagerness? Time would probably tell. “Well Rukin, follow me. We are going to see exactly what it is you can do.”
