DESCRIPTION
The Alpha-3 Nimbus-class interceptor, more commonly known as the V-Wing, is an antique model of starfighter originally manufactured by Kuat Systems Engineering for the Grand Army of the Republic, and used primarily during the latter part of the Clone Wars, although it was retained in inventory by the First Galactic Empire until TIE/LN production could be ramped up to replace them. One of the finest light starfighters of its day, the V-Wing primarily served as an interceptor, supplanting though never entirely replacing the old V-19 Torrent in service.

The V-Wing echoed many design cues of the later TIE series, being exceptionally small, light and basic in terms of armament and pilot amenities, all in the name of increasing its power-to-weight ratio. The type was equipped with 4 rapid-fire light laser cannons, and lacked an internal life support system, requiring pilots to wear a sealed environmental suit when flying outside a planetary atmosphere. Despite this, the ship retained a few advantages over the later TIE; for one thing, it was shielded, affording it and its pilot a measure of protection from enemy fire. It also incorporated an onboard astromech droid socket, its occupant being able to perform limited in-flight repairs to battle-damaged components, as well as calculations for hyperspace jumps. Although the stock V-Wing lacked an internal hyperdrive, it was compatible with an external hyperspace booster ring, giving it a much greater range than the later TIE.

The V-Wing was taken out of frontline service by the First Galactic Empire shortly after the advent of the TIE, relegated to backrocket system garrisons and rear-line vessels, Imperial allies and - in most cases - the scrap heap. The type is exceptionally rare in the present day, being difficult to maintain and inferior to many modern starfighters in terms of its capabilities. Collectors of Clone Wars-era technology may pay a premium for one in good condition, of course.

LEGALITY
Restricted. V-Wings are starfighters, and are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To create an antique starfighter, and to bring a vessel from the Prequel trilogy into our site's fanon.
