DESCRIPTION
The V-19 Torrent interceptor is an antique model of light combat spacecraft originally manufactured by Slayn & Korpil. Fielded primarily by the Republic during the Clone Wars, the Torrent was widely used by the Grand Army of the Republic's clone pilots, and endured in service even into the Imperial era, despite its shortcomings.

Though unimpressive in the present day, the V-19 had a respectable armament for its era, including 2 medium laser cannons mounted in the wingtips, as well as twin 3-shot concussion missile launchers. Another notable feature, the Torrent is equipped with an early strike foil system, allowing its 3 wings to fold for landing and stowage aboard a carrier vessel. Unfortunately, the Torrent does lack any kind of shielding, and actually has a fairly weak hull, making it particularly vulnerable to enemy fire.

The Torrent's performance was where it really shone, especially in its day. Capable of 105 MGLT, the V-19 was exceptionally maneuverable, nearly able to match the nimble performance of the Confederacy of Independent Systems' pilot-less droid starfighters. Some Jedi were even known to use V-19s for this reason.

Though classified as a short-range interceptor, the V-19 Torrent was equipped with a hyperspace capability, although early models achieved this through the use of an external hyperdrive ring. Later models, however, were equipped with an integrated class 1 drive, and most older models in service were upgraded to this standard during the later part of the Clone Wars. The type also has a full week worth of consumables for extended flights.

The V-19, despite its good armament and performance, had a troubled history during the Clone Wars. Though it was one of the first starfighters to see combat under the Grand Army of the Republic, with several examples taking part in the First Battle of Geonosis, production bottlenecks meant that it was months before more than a handful of squadrons would receive the type. Once large numbers were finally available, the V-19 proceeded to take appalling losses against CIS starfighters, although this has largely been attributed to deeply flawed pilot training programs instituted by the Kaminoans. It was not until later in the war that the type's potential began to shine through, at which point other, more modern starfighter types had become available.

In the Imperial era, he V-19 was largely withdrawn from frontline service, being issued instead to low-priority planetary garrisons and Imperial allies. Respectable numbers were acquired by the Alliance to Restore the Republic, although these were quickly supplanted by more modern types when they became available. Increasingly, V-19s were relegated to backrocket system defense forces, cash-strapped law enforcement agencies, fringers and criminals.

In the present day, the V-19 Torrent starfighter is vanishingly rare in military service, being relegated to the status of an antique. Examples in good condition have some value on the collectors' market, although the type is most frequently found in the landfills of junk planets these days.
