Munching on a raw chicken leg, Nibs gazed up at his master friend with wide, puppy dog eyes, orbs flicking between the human Jedi's bright face and the box of spicy chicken wings and nuggets he held in one hand. The Anooba chewed loudly then tossed the bone in the air. Before it could be caught between snapping jaws, however, an invisible force yanked the bone out of the canid's reach and off the ship. Prized chicken leg bone flung out of reach and indignant at the non-verbal command to sit and stay, Nibs whined pitifully at Arctus and nudged the man's arm with his nose.

The act, aimed to guilt trip the Knight, went unsuccessful as Selene the Arkanian Dragon rebuked the spoiled Anooba's antics with a baleful glare and low hiss.

"Shush, you two. Is that how you're gonna make a good impression on a new friend?" the Corellian lightly admonished his companions with a barely concealed grin, amusement glinting in his hazel grey eyes. As if to emphasize his point, he carefully shook the box he held in one hand at the two. "Methinks I, for one, am gonna start with an absolute blast."

Hot wings and nuggets, separated inside the box of course, rattled gently and – as expected – earned two pairs of hungry gazes.

Although he projected a calm and confident aura, Arctus Ramiel Friers was a panicking mess inside. While he agreed with the Council that he was ready to mentor one of the Padawans on his own, remnants of self-doubt still clung to the Knight – albeit not in a disparaging sense anymore, which he took as a positive since his rank-up. One such doubt revolved in him being too overprotective towards his potential (prospective?) student. While it was good to protect the future generation, coddling them too much wouldn't help them in the long run. Arctus wanted to avoid that, and though he would still be doing the protecting he accepted the fact that he wouldn't be able to do it every darn time.

Though there were other small doubts that he knew might crop here and there, the Corellian focused on his overprotective streak first and foremost. It was something he really wanted to not overdo – Force knew it sure had suffocated his best friends sometimes in the past.

The Deep Core planet of Tython held a special, deep tie to the Living Force. A trip to the planet had become something of a pilgrimage for members of the Jedi Order, and Arctus, of course, was not exempt from it. The task at hand today was to meet with Padawan Heidi Vulpis and see if she could be the Knight's potential student, but more importantly if the young Jedi would even consider the Corellian as a good enough mentor for her. At the end of the day, though, the decision would have to be a mutual agreement between the two.

The forest stretched before the Knight who sat on the roof of his ship, gaze scanning the area for any signs of the Padawan. Perhaps it was some sort of a test for the young teen to locate their meeting place to see how well she could navigate around a new place on her own. Arctus had asked one of his fellow Knights to escort Padawan Vulpis to Tython, and to leave the young one on the spaceport with both instruction to meet the Corellian and directions to where the man's ship would be located. Of course Arctus, on his way to their meeting spot, had taken the time to cook up said hot wings and nuggets he carried, but the more he stared at the box the more he felt that he seemed to be bribing the kid with food to endear himself to her. And besides…

"What if she doesn't even like chicken? Or spicy food? Wow, I'm an idiot."

Of all the things he should be worrying about – Is the Padawan on the planet already? Is she making her way here without trouble? Why did I make that weird request-slash-task in the first place? – the one he chose was the Padawan's food preference.

"So far, so good," he hazarded a guess, unaware of the almost disapproving gaze Selene had sent him and Nibs' happy, goofy canine smile.

Another trip in the metal box of doom. Oh, how she despised the galaxy's technology. She'd gotten better at it, and she'd even sent Laila an emoji the other day! But there was always that sense of disconnection, as if she were an outsider looking in. On the one hand, she was, her planet had little technology. Sure, she made some new friends in the Jedi Order, and she got along well enough with some Jedi Knights, but she knew people stared at her whenever she trembled her way up the metal ramp or tied herself into the chair with another pair of belts.

Heidi was overjoyed when the ship landed on Tython and the Jedi Knight gave her the instructions. Not only was she about to meet someone new, but she'd also be away from any metal boxes! She wasted no time rushing out of the spaceport and into the forest. And just like that, any nerves vanished like snow in the sun. She could hear the birds' whistles and the footsteps of critters in the distance. Above all, she felt nature's beating heart.

She'd been taught by the Jedi that what she was feeling was the living Force, which she was always strongly attuned with. Unfortunately, that never translated to more mundane things like Force Pull or Force Push. However, it aided her navigation through the forest, which, when combined with her sensitive ears and tail for balance, made her journey a breeze.

It didn't take long for her to find the location she was given and— oh. It was another ship. Heidi bit her lower lip briefly before pushing through and approaching the vessel. Hearing some noises, the girl raised her gaze to the metal structure's roof, where she noticed a man sitting on top. And, by the sound of things, he had some company? Some sort of animals? "Hello there, Mr. Friers!" Heidi called out. "It's me, Heidi! I'll climb onto the ship, if that's alright!"

Without waiting for an answer, the girl started climbing the metal hull, her large tail helping her balance. She was on top of the ship in seconds, where she was met with the most beautiful view and— OH MY FORCE WAS THAT A DRAGON!? She froze instantly, not noticing the smaller animal or the Jedi knight. In her mind, a battle raged, with one side wanting to run up to the dragon and hug it, while the other yelled at her to turn around and run before she was burned to a crisp. As a result, she did nothing but stare, not moving a single muscle.

It seemed that Arctus didn’t have to wait too long for the Padawan to arrive. A strong breeze swept past the three who sat on the roof of the Knight’s ship, carrying with it various scents that easily piqued both Nibs and Selene’s interest - but for vastly different reasons, it seemed. Arctus knew all too well what made his companions tick, however, and as such the Corellian was well equipped to handle both the Anooba and the Arkanian Dragon.

Most of the time.

One hand rose to scratch behind Nibs’ ear, the other gently smoothing over the scales on Selene’s long neck. Two pairs of eyes alighted upon the Knight who projected an air of calm and warm welcome through the Force, so when Heidi Vulpis appeared and began to approach the ship, one of the two animals behaved much better than the other. Arctus just hoped that the Dragon’s fickle nature would not make an appearance for today. He didn’t want to be written off by the Council for letting his dragon make off with a Padawan thinking the poor young Jedi was some sort of threat to her companion - or worse, prey.

”Good job, Nay-nay,” the Corellian praised the winged reptile gently and sincerely, chuckling when she proceeded to nuzzle him. His attention was soon summoned by Heidi when she called out with her intent. Arctus held off on telling her that he would be coming down with his companions instead since she beat him to it, deftly making her way up to the roof. The girl made it look so easy with that large tail of hers, but the older Jedi’s playful and teasing nature couldn’t help but joke with a ”Man, I wish my knees can still help me move like that lightning fast. Can’t now, though - old man with old knees here, so I’m more of a slowpoke, hehe.”

His light-hearted jest didn’t seem to reach the kid, though. The Near-human only stood there across him and his companions unmoving, her gaze locked intently on the dragon beside him. Somehow he could hear the gears of Heidi’s mind twisting, but not quite accurately. Beside a fully-grown Anooba, Selene’s size was now on that stage where Arctus himself could ride on the dragon’s back if he she so wished. It’s only fair for the Padawan to feel apprehension, or even fear, to be honest. Still, Arctus capitalized on the fact that Selene was staring back at Heidi not because she thought the Padawan was a competition for the Knight’s attention, but because the Arkanian Dragon was somewhat surprised that the tiny humanoid had the absolute gall to stare at her.

”Hey there, Miss Vulpis!” the Corellian greeted the Padawan with a friendly and warm smile as he rose to his feet. Without looking at his companions he gestured at them with one hand, lowering it with his palm facing below. Settle down, it said. The pair followed, but Nibs accentuated it with a happy bark aimed at Heidi as if in greeting. ”glad you made it. I hope you didn’t get into any trouble while making your way here?”

Whatever her response, Heidi would be able to feel Arctus’ genuine interest in what she had to share. His gaze would only wander once she’s done, hazel grey eyes only settling upon her again after a silent moment.

”Say, Heidi… what kind of Jedi do you want to be?”

Better ask her now than later since he had planned a lot of things for them to do today.
