DESCRIPTION​

The Type M ornithopter is a model of light aircraft produced by Universal Air Products, a major manufacturer of flying vehicles and related equipment in the Stygian Reaches. Made without the use of locally expensive repulsorlift technology, the Type M flies by the use of a beating wing system driven by a central motor; this gives the craft extremely good maneuverability, even compared to some repulsorcraft, although its speed is somewhat lacking.

The Type M comes in two variants, the Type MC, which is the civilian version stripped of any armament, and the Type MM, which is the military version fitted with a light beamer cannon (equivalent to a light blaster cannon), a grenade chute and an external concussion missile rack for light ground attack missions. Both versions are flown by a crew of 2, including a pilot and copilot, although the copilot can be substituted for a passenger at need. The Type M has a top speed of some 400 kph, and is capable of hovering, unlike some other non-repulsorlift aircraft.

Being an ornithopter, the Type M is loud, complex and not entirely intuitive to fly, making it dangerous to those not specifically trained on the type. Nevertheless, ornithopters like the Type M are easier and cheaper to purchase than a repulsorcraft in most parts of the Stygian Reaches, and are widely used in a variety of roles across the region. Notably, governments such as the Satrapy of the Frontier Territories make extensive use of the type in their military.

LEGALITY​

Restricted/legal. Type M ornithopters in their military configuration are combat craft, and are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities. In their civilian configuration they are legal more or less everywhere.
