Appearance
Raylan is a fairly young Jedi only being in his mid twenties. His age transfers well into how he carries himself, full of energy and an idealistic attitude not yet crushed by the experience of an old man. He stands tall and proud, his head held high, his chin up and his eyes unwavering. Thick dark brown hair is cut short and will always remain so as Raylan can't stand when his hair grows past his ears. The same goes with his facial hair which is usually trimmed and well maintained. He's a Jedi, and a proud one, but due to his line of work will often not be seen with his Jedi robes.
Thick muscles and a lean build make Raylan a natural athlete. He likes to train and can consistently be seen trying to improve his abilities. He is a Jedi after all and thus he knows it is better to be prepared than not to be. With the war still looming and the Sith Empire now on the rise Raylan has seen his fair share of action. As such a few scars can be seen on his body, most easily hidden underneath his clothing. However a crescent shaped moon can be seen cut into the back of his left hand. It's small but it is no less distinguishing and a common feature that can easily recognize Raylan from the rest of the people of the galaxy.

Personality
Raylan was born and raised within the Jedi Order thus he views the Jedi as something far greater than a religious sect. In every sense of the word the Jedi are Raylan's family and he wouldn't change that for the world. He has a deep connection to the Jedi's temples, tenants, other Jedi and more importantly the Light side of the Force. This is due to the strict training he had as a child and the reassurance of the goodness of Jedi values. Protecting the innocent, upholding the truth, a search for knowledge and the constant betterment of oneself. Yes, Raylan Shawl's loyalty to the Jedi is unwavering and because of this he's found a sense of inner peace within a time of war.
Like so many Jedi within the time of the Hundred Years Darkness he was forced to fight through necessity. In his eyes he was protecting the Jedi Order, from Jedi who lost their way. Even though they were Exiles they were still Jedi to Raylan. They were once brothers, friends, mentors and family. It pained him to watch them fall, to see them release their hatred and selfish desires upon the Order and the rest of the Galaxy. However Raylan fought them regardless because he deemed it necessary to protect his Order, the Jedi Order.
Raylan is a man of principles if nothing else. He keeps his word, regardless of the price he has to pay to keep it. His honor means much and more to him and a quick way to anger him is to attack his character. In many ways Raylan's pride is his slickest slope down into oblivion. He can be stubborn and headstrong, unwavering in his beliefs and unable (or even unwilling) to see the other side of the same coin. After years of fighting and more recently with the emergence of the Sith Raylan now no longer views the "Exiles" as his family. He is unwilling to look at their problems, to search for their perspective and find the reasons for which they fell to the Darkside. He now see's the galactic conflict solely as a black and white issue, good vs evil, Jedi vs Sith. There is no grey morality anymore.
His idealistic nature comes down to his firm belief in the Jedi. It is his opinion that the Jedi are what is best for the galaxy as a whole. This love and trust for the Jedi is almost a blind sense of knowing. When given a task Raylan will complete it no matter the cost as he see's it to be the best course of action. He trust's the judgement of his higher up Jedi, and regardless if he likes a decision made by them or not Raylan will accept it. In a way this has made him a militant among the Jedi, fighting for them and following orders in the name of duty to the Jedi Order. He is content with this life, regardless of how tiring it is to live it.
Background
Raylan Shawl was born from the forbidden love of two Jedi, his mother Samantheia Shawl and his father Eddard Ralden. Both were accomplished Jedi in their own respects and both knew the consequences of their love, but each welcomed the others company regardless. It didn't take long for Raylan to enter the picture which only complicated his parents secret affair. Due to the fear of being caught and exiled from the Jedi Samantheia and Eddard retreated to an outer rim world where they could safely hide Raylan's birth from the Jedi.
The Jedi however were no fools and suspected this romance between Raylan's parents. Feeling betrayed a team of Jedi confronted Eddard and Samantheia. They demanded that Raylan be brought back to Jedha so he could learn to be a Jedi. Eddard refused and a fight broke out between them. Samantheia was slain in the conflict, Eddard escaped with his life and Raylan was brought back to Jedha. He grew up within the Jedi temples and with their teachings, the true circumstances of his birth and parents would forever be unknown to him. Instead he was told his mother died during childbirth and his father was killed by a darkside exile.
He spent most of his life on Jedha and it was there were he learned to be a warrior of peace. With the conflict between the Jedi and Exiles looming Raylan was knighted at a young age. Sent into battle with his peers and a mentor to watch over them he saw all to soon the destruction of war. In that short time Raylan lost friends both to death and the darkside. However he stayed true to the Jedi and entrusted himself to their principles. Being a loyal soldier in times of war until finally the Exiles were beaten back into the outer worlds of the galaxy.
After the tragedy of Illum Raylan was a young and impressionable Jedi Knight. He got in with a group of Jedi that helped steel his nerves against the Exiles. They called themselves the Shadows, and Raylan learned all to well why they did. His actions, along with the other Jedi, were cold and calculating. He justified what he did in this time by saying he was protecting the Jedi Order. The Darkside was unnatural and needed to be destroyed. It was the only way to protect the Light. Not only that but the memory of Illum was vivid in his minds eye.
After years of hunting down the Exiles, just a rag tag group of Darkside users, everything changed when they unified into the Sith order. Most of the Shadows he had originally started out with were killed themselves, some even fell to the darkness, but most abandoned the sect in favor of a less conflicted means of war. Not Raylan though. He still wanders the galaxy, mostly alone, hunting the Darkside wherever it can be found.
He does all of this in the name of the Jedi Order, his family.
