DESCRIPTION
The R-70 Dalyrake is a class of armed pinnace manufactured by Corona Defense Products, an Outer Rim military vehicle manufacturer whose fine products grace the arsenals of many a petty warlord and low-rent corporate security force. Named for an arachnoid predator native to the planet Talus in the Corellian system, the Dalyrake is known by many of its pilots as the Dallier, due to its sluggish performance compared to true starfighters.Designed to act as a combination long-range escort fighter, light courier, scouting vessel and VIP transport, the R-70 is a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none. Equipped with a hyperdrive and a navicomputer, it nevertheless has very long range for a vessel of its size, and just enough amenities to make the trip bearable for its crew and single passenger. The ship can also carry up to a quarter-ton of cargo, making it useful for transporting small, valuable items.
The R-70's armament is relatively light for its size, consisting of two fixed, forward-firing medium laser cannon, controlled by the pilot, and a single aft-facing medium laser cannon on a flexible mount, controlled by a dedicated tail gunner. Unlike most dedicated starfighters, the R-70 also possesses a light deflector screen, which gives it a bit of extra durability in a fight. This can be important, as the R-70 has a top acceleration of only 85 MGLT, significantly slower than most starfighters.
The R-70 has a crew of 3, consisting of 1 pilot, 1 astrogator/sensor operator in charge of the sensor screens and navicomputer, and 1 tail gunner. The ship can also carry a single passenger. Conditions aboard are cramped, but crew and passengers do have the use of a private refresher, as well as a food prep area with a compact autochef and a mini conservator to provide a welcome change from standard in-flight rations. This is important, as the ship's consumables have a duration of up to a standard week.
R-70s are a popular class of vessel for budget-minded customers, who wish to get more utility out of their light spacecraft than the average dedicated starfighter can offer. They are commonly seen in service with petty warlords, backrocket system defense forces and law enforcement agencies, as well as corporate security and low-rent mercenaries.
Of particular note, the largest current operator of the R-70 is Blackrow Hyperlogistics, whose Risk Management division employs the type as their main light escort, patrol and picket ship. They are a common sight around worlds where Blackrow has a presence, as well as among convoys of Blackrow-owned vessels.
LEGALITY
Legal. Though armed, the R-70 Dalyrake is considered to be a very light freighter in most systems. Such a vessel in private hands will likely draw closer scrutiny from the authorities, however.
INTENT
To create a "grunt" machine for use by corporate goons, mercenaries and pirates. Specifically, these machines would be commonly used by pilots and other operatives working for Blackrow Risk Management.
ADVANCED TECH
Yes. Given that it is a fighter-like vessel with shields, weapons and a hyperdrive, this thing would require a plot for a character to get a hold of one.
